    This study focused on the behavioral sustainability of latrine use and continued functionality of rural water supply systems in ODF certified villages in the Sindh and Punjab provinces of Pakistan. Our chief role was to develop, integrate and analyze social norms measures as part of the larger sustainability check. This report presents those methods, measures and findings.     Spatial transcriptomic analysis of virtual prostate biopsy reveals confounding effect of tissue heterogeneity on genomic signatures

    Genetic signatures have added a molecular dimension to prognostics and therapeutic decision-making. However, tumour heterogeneity in prostate cancer and current sampling methods could confound accurate assessment. Based on previously published spatial transcriptomic data from multifocal prostate cancer, we created virtual biopsy models that mimic conventional biopsy placement and core size. We then analysed the gene expression of different prognostic signatures (OncotypeDx®, Decipher®, Prostadiag®) using a step-wise approach with increasing resolution from pseudo-bulk analysis of the whole biopsy, to differentiation by tissue subtype (benign, stroma, tumour), followed by distinct tumour grade and finally clonal resolution. The gene expression profile of virtual tumour biopsies revealed clear differences between grade groups and tumour clones, compared to a benign control, which were not reflected in bulk analyses. This suggests that bulk analyses of whole biopsies or tumour-only areas, as used in clinical practice, may provide an inaccurate assessment of gene profiles. The type of tissue, the grade of the tumour and the clonal composition all influence the gene expression in a biopsy. Clinical decision making based on biopsy genomics should be made with caution while we await more precise targeting and cost-effective spatial analyses

    Large expert-curated database for benchmarking document similarity detection in biomedical literature search

    Document recommendation systems for locating relevant literature have mostly relied on methods developed a decade ago. This is largely due to the lack of a large offline gold-standard benchmark of relevant documents that cover a variety of research fields such that newly developed literature search techniques can be compared, improved and translated into practice. To overcome this bottleneck, we have established the RElevant LIterature SearcH consortium consisting of more than 1500 scientists from 84 countries, who have collectively annotated the relevance of over 180 000 PubMed-listed articles with regard to their respective seed (input) article/s. The majority of annotations were contributed by highly experienced, original authors of the seed articles. The collected data cover 76% of all unique PubMed Medical Subject Headings descriptors. No systematic biases were observed across different experience levels, research fields or time spent on annotations. More importantly, annotations of the same document pairs contributed by different scientists were highly concordant. We further show that the three representative baseline methods used to generate recommended articles for evaluation (Okapi Best Matching 25, Term Frequency-Inverse Document Frequency and PubMed Related Articles) had similar overall performances. Additionally, we found that these methods each tend to produce distinct collections of recommended articles, suggesting that a hybrid method may be required to completely capture all relevant articles. The established database server located at https://relishdb.ict.griffith.edu.au is freely available for the downloading of annotation data and the blind testing of new methods. We expect that this benchmark will be useful for stimulating the development of new powerful techniques for title and title/abstract-based search engines for relevant articles in biomedical research.Peer reviewe

    Nursing Shortage in India with special reference to International Migration of Nurses

    In any health system, the health worker determines the nature and quality of services provided. Data demonstrate that most health systems across the globe face nursing shortages, varying across regions and rural-urban distribution. Although nursing services are an integral part of both preventive and curative aspects of India's health system, the nursing estimates of the country shows that India has been facing shortage of nurses since independence. Studies show that professional, social and economic reasons are considered to be behind the nursing shortage in India. Similar reasons induce Indian nurses to look for migration opportunities in other countries. The high income countries have discovered India as a new source of well trained, English-speaking nurses to overcome their nursing shortages. This has resulted in mass migration of nurses from India which in turn may lead to non-availability of standard quality health services especially to the poor section of the population in the country. Strong political commitment is required for improving the nursing situation in India
