    Measurement of the muon charge asymmetry in inclusive ppW+Xpp \rightarrow W + X production at s=7\sqrt{s} = 7 TeV at CMS and an improved determination of light parton distribution functions

    Measurements of the muon charge asymmetry in inclusive ppWXpp \rightarrow WX production at s=7\sqrt{s}=7 TeV are presented. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 4.7 fb1\mathrm{fb^{-1}} recorded with the CMS detector at the LHC. With a sample of more than twenty million WμνW \rightarrow \mu\nu events, the statistical precision is greatly improved in comparison to previous measurements. These new results provide additional constraints on the parton distribution functions of the proton in the range of the Bjorken scaling variable xx from 10310^{-3} to 10110^{-1}. These measurements are used together with the cross sections for inclusive deep inelastic ep scattering at HERA in a next-to-leading-order QCD analysis.Comment: 6 pages, 11 figures.     Performance of MET reconstruction and pileup mitigation techniques in CMS

    The performance of missing transverse momentum reconstruction algorithms is presented using 8 TeV pp collision data collected with the CMS detector, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 12.2±0.512.2 \pm 0.5 fb1\mathrm{fb^{-1}}. The scale and resolution of missing transverse momentum and the effects of multiple proton-proton interactions (pileup), are measured using events with an identified Z boson or isolated photon. They are in general well described by the simulation. Advanced missing transverse momentum reconstruction algorithms are also developed specifically to mitigate the effects of large numbers of pileup interactions on missing transverse momentum resolution. Using these advanced algorithms, the dependence of the missing transverse momentum resolution on pileup interactions is reduced significantly.Comment: 3 pages, 6 figures.     Highlights from the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) Experiment

    The highlights of the recent activities and physics results leading up to the summer of 2018 from the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) experiment at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) are presented here. The CMS experiment has a very wide-ranging physics program, and only a very limited subset of the physics analyses being performed at CMS are discussed here, consisting of several important results from the analysis of proton-proton collision data at center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. These include important analyses of Higgs boson physics, with the highlight being the first observation of the ttˉH\mathrm{t\bar{t}H} production of the Higgs boson, along with analyses pertaining to precision standard model measurements, top quark physics, with the single top production cross-section measurement, and flavor physics, with the important observation of χb\chi_{b}(3P) states.     Genomic configuration of Bacillus subtilis (NMB01) unveils its antiviral activity against Orthotospovirus arachinecrosis infecting tomato

    Orthotospovirus arachinecrosis (groundnut bud necrosis virus, GBNV) infecting tomato is a devastating viral pathogen responsible for severe yield losses of up to 100%. Considering the significance of the plant growth-promoting bacteria to induce innate immunity, attempts were made to evaluate the antiviral efficacy of Bacillus subtilis NMB01 against GBNV in cowpea and tomato. Foliar application of B. subtilis NMB01 at 1.5% onto the leaves of cowpea and tomato followed by challenge inoculation with GBNV significantly reduced the incidence of GBNV from 80% to 90% in response to the untreated inoculated control. Hence, we had a quest to understand if any genes were contributing toward the suppression of GBNV in assay hosts. To unveil the secrecy, whole-genome sequencing of B. subtilis NMB01 was carried out. The genome sequence of NMB01 revealed the presence of secondary metabolite biosynthetic gene clusters, including non-ribosomal peptide synthetases (NRPSs) and polyketide synthases (PKSs) which also encoded bacteriocins and antimicrobial peptides. The pan-genome analysis identified 1,640 core genes, 4,885 dispensable genes, and 60 unique genes, including MAMP genes that induce host immune responses. Comparative genome and proteome analysis with other genomes of B. subtilis strains in a public domain through OrthoVenn analysis revealed the presence of 4,241 proteins, 3,695 clusters, and 655 singletons in our study isolate. Furthermore, the NMB01-treated tomato plants increased the levels of defense-related genes (MAPKK1, WRKY33, PR1, PAL, and NPR1), enhancing immune system priming against GBNV infection. These findings suggest that B. subtilis NMB01 can be used as a promising biological control agent for managing plant viral disease sustainably

    Four-lepton production in proton-proton collisions, pp -> (Z/gamma*)(Z/gamma*) -> 4l, where l = e or mu, is studied at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV with the CMS detector at the LHC. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb(-1). The ZZ production cross section, sigma(pp -> ZZ) = 17.2 +/- 0.5 (stat) +/- 0.7 (syst) +/- 0.4 (theo) +/- 0.4 (lumi) pb, measured using events with two opposite-sign, same-flavor lepton pairs produced in the mass region 60 4l) = 4.83(-0.22)(+0.23) (stat)(-0.29)(+0.32) (syst) +/- 0.08 (theo) +/- 0.12(lumi) x 10(-6) for events with a four-lepton invariant mass in the range 80 4GeV for all opposite-sign, same-flavor lepton pairs. The results agree with standard model predictions. The invariant mass distribution of the four-lepton system is used to set limits on anomalous ZZZ and ZZ. couplings at 95% confidence level: -0.0012 < f(4)(Z) < 0.0010, -0.0010 < f(5)(Z) < 0.0013, -0.0012 < f(4)(gamma) < 0.0013, -0.0012 < f(5)(gamma) < 0.0013

    Differential cross section measurements for the production of a W boson in association with jets in proton–proton collisions at √s = 7 TeV

    Measurements are reported of differential cross sections for the production of a W boson, which decays into a muon and a neutrino, in association with jets, as a function of several variables, including the transverse momenta (pT) and pseudorapidities of the four leading jets, the scalar sum of jet transverse momenta (HT), and the difference in azimuthal angle between the directions of each jet and the muon. The data sample of pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV was collected with the CMS detector at the LHC and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 5.0 fb[superscript −1]. The measured cross sections are compared to predictions from Monte Carlo generators, MadGraph + pythia and sherpa, and to next-to-leading-order calculations from BlackHat + sherpa. The differential cross sections are found to be in agreement with the predictions, apart from the pT distributions of the leading jets at high pT values, the distributions of the HT at high-HT and low jet multiplicity, and the distribution of the difference in azimuthal angle between the leading jet and the muon at low values.United States.     Impacts of the Tropical Pacific/Indian Oceans on the Seasonal Cycle of the West African Monsoon

    The current consensus is that drought has developed in the Sahel during the second half of the twentieth century as a result of remote effects of oceanic anomalies amplified by local land–atmosphere interactions. This paper focuses on the impacts of oceanic anomalies upon West African climate and specifically aims to identify those from SST anomalies in the Pacific/Indian Oceans during spring and summer seasons, when they were significant. Idealized sensitivity experiments are performed with four atmospheric general circulation models (AGCMs). The prescribed SST patterns used in the AGCMs are based on the leading mode of covariability between SST anomalies over the Pacific/Indian Oceans and summer rainfall over West Africa. The results show that such oceanic anomalies in the Pacific/Indian Ocean lead to a northward shift of an anomalous dry belt from the Gulf of Guinea to the Sahel as the season advances. In the Sahel, the magnitude of rainfall anomalies is comparable to that obtained by other authors using SST anomalies confined to the proximity of the Atlantic Ocean. The mechanism connecting the Pacific/Indian SST anomalies with West African rainfall has a strong seasonal cycle. In spring (May and June), anomalous subsidence develops over both the Maritime Continent and the equatorial Atlantic in response to the enhanced equatorial heating. Precipitation increases over continental West Africa in association with stronger zonal convergence of moisture. In addition, precipitation decreases over the Gulf of Guinea. During the monsoon peak (July and August), the SST anomalies move westward over the equatorial Pacific and the two regions where subsidence occurred earlier in the seasons merge over West Africa. The monsoon weakens and rainfall decreases over the Sahel, especially in August.Peer reviewe
