    Can Twitter be a source of information on allergy? Correlation of pollen counts with tweets reporting symptoms of allergic rhinoconjunctivitis and names of antihistamine drugs

    Pollen forecasts are in use everywhere to inform therapeutic decisions for patients with allergic rhinoconjunctivitis (ARC). We exploited data derived from Twitter in order to identify tweets reporting a combination of symptoms consistent with a case definition of ARC and those reporting the name of an antihistamine drug. In order to increase the sensitivity of the system, we applied an algorithm aimed at automatically identifying jargon expressions related to medical terms. We compared weekly Twitter trends with National Allergy Bureau weekly pollen counts derived from US stations, and found a high correlation of the sum of the total pollen counts from each stations with tweets reporting ARC symptoms (Pearson's correlation coefficient: 0.95) and with tweets reporting antihistamine drug names (Pearson's correlation coefficient: 0.93). Longitude and latitude of the pollen stations affected the strength of the correlation. Twitter and other social networks may play a role in allergic disease surveillance and in signaling drug consumptions trends

    Dynamic shear behaviour of truss towers for wind turbines

    The global interest in renewable energy sources has increased the attention to the manufacturing of wind turbine towers, since they are largely diffused in seismic areas too. Different types of towers have been produced in recent years. Among them, the truss structures assure a reduced mass and the modular characteristics necessary for easy transportation. Reduced costs of production, installation and maintenance are typical of these structures. Nonlinear dynamics is an efficient framework to analyze structures subjected to variable actions, i.e. to assess the seismic safety of wind turbine towers in case of earthquake actions. This study outlines a procedure to evaluate the post-elastic behavior of truss towers for wind turbines. Rigid-plastic behaviour is taken into account to develop approximate solutions for the problem of a tower modeled as a vertical cantilever beam and subjected to harmonic base motion. A comparison with the results of a finite element model is proposed

    Form factors of descendant operators in the massive Lee-Yang model

    The form factors of the descendant operators in the massive Lee-Yang model are determined up to level 7. This is first done by exploiting the conserved quantities of the integrable theory to generate the solutions for the descendants starting from the lowest non-trivial solutions in each operator family. We then show that the operator space generated in this way, which is isomorphic to the conformal one, coincides, level by level, with that implied by the SS-matrix through the form factor bootstrap. The solutions we determine satisfy asymptotic conditions carrying the information about the level that we conjecture to hold for all the operators of the model.Comment: 23 page

    Activation of melanocortin receptors MC1 and MC5 attenuates retinal damage in experimental diabetic retinopathy

    We hypothesize that melanocortin receptors (MC) could activate tissue protective circuit in a model of streptozotocin- (STZ-) induced diabetic retinopathy (DR) in mice. At 12–16 weeks after diabetes induction, fluorescein angiography (FAG) revealed an approximate incidence of 80% microvascular changes, typical of DR, in the animals, without signs of vascular leakage. Occludin progressively decreased in the retina of mice developing retinopathy. qPCR of murine retina revealed expression of two MC receptors, Mc1r and Mc5r. The intravitreal injection (5 \u1d707L) of the selective MC1 small molecule agonist BMS-470539 (33 \u1d707mol) and the MC5 peptidomimetic agonist PG-901 (7.32 nM) elicited significant protection with regular course and caliber of retinal vessels, as quantified at weeks 12 and 16 after diabetes induction. Mouse retina homogenate settings indicated an augmented release of IL-1\u1d6fc, IL-1\u1d6fd, IL-6, MIP-1\u1d6fc, MIP-2\u1d6fc, MIP-3\u1d6fc, and VEGF from diabetic compared to nondiabetic mice. Application of PG20N or AGRP and MC5 and MC1 antagonist, respectively, augmented the release of cytokines, while the agonists BMS-470539 and PG-901 almost restored normal pattern of these mediators back to nondiabetic values. Similar changes were quantified with respect to Ki-67 staining. Finally, application of MC3-MC4 agonist/antagonists resulted to be inactive with respect to all parameters under assessment

    Sine-Gordon description of the scaling three-state Potts antiferromagnet on the square lattice

    The scaling limit as T->0 of the antiferromagnetic three-state Potts model on the square lattice is described by the sine-Gordon quantum field theory at a specific value of the coupling. We show that the correspondence follows unambigously from an analysis of the sine-Gordon operator space based on locality, and that the scalar operators carrying solitonic charge play an essential role in the description of the lattice model. We then evaluate the correlation functions within the form factor approach and give a number of universal predictions that can be checked in numerical simulations.Comment: 10 pages, late

    Integrable field theory and critical phenomena. The Ising model in a magnetic field

    The two-dimensional Ising model is the simplest model of statistical mechanics exhibiting a second order phase transition. While in absence of magnetic field it is known to be solvable on the lattice since Onsager's work of the forties, exact results for the magnetic case have been missing until the late eighties, when A.Zamolodchikov solved the model in a field at the critical temperature, directly in the scaling limit, within the framework of integrable quantum field theory. In this article we review this field theoretical approach to the Ising universality class, with particular attention to the results obtained starting from Zamolodchikov's scattering solution and to their comparison with the numerical estimates on the lattice. The topics discussed include scattering theory, form factors, correlation functions, universal amplitude ratios and perturbations around integrable directions. Although we restrict our discussion to the Ising model, the emphasis is on the general methods of integrable quantum field theory which can be used in the study of all universality classes of critical behaviour in two dimensions.Comment: 42 pages; invited review article for J.     ABSTRACT Introduction Congenital abnormalities of the kidney of the urinary tract are the most common cause of pediatric kidney failure. These disorders are highly heterogeneous, and their etiology is poorly understood. Methods We performed genome-wide linkage analysis and whole-exome sequencing in a family with autosomal dominant congenital abnormalities of the kidney of the urinary tract (7 affected family members). We also performed sequence analysis in 311 unrelated patients, as well as histologic and functional studies. Results Linkage analysis identified five regions of the genome that were shared among all affected family members. Exome sequencing identified a single rare deleterious variant within these linkage intervals, a heterozygous splice-site mutation in dual serine/threonine and tyrosine protein kinase (DSTYK). This variant, which resulted in aberrant gene product splicing, was present in all affected family members. Additional independent DSTYK mutations, including nonsense and splice-site mutations, were detected among 7/311 unrelated patients. DSTYK is highly expressed in the maturing epithelia of all major organs, localizing to cell membranes. Knockdown in zebrafish resulted in multi-organ developmental defects, resembling loss of fibroblast growth factor (FGF) signaling. Consistent with this finding, DSTYK colocalizes with FGF receptors in the ureteric bud and metanephric mesenchyme. Finally, DSTYK knockdown in human embryonic kidney cells inhibited FGF-stimulated ERK-phosphorylation, the principal signal downstream of receptor tyrosine kinases. Conclusions We detected DSTYK mutations in 2.2% of patients with congenital abnormalities of the kidney and urinary tract whom we studied, suggesting that DSTYK is a major determinant of human urinary tract development, downstream of FGF signaling
