    Two dimensional flow visualization model tests were used to substantiate the flow stability benefits derived from the use of turning vanes in the root and tip turn flow areas. Results indicate the need for corner fillets and flow injection into the acute corner formed by the intersection of the rib and simulated airfoil suction surface in order to minimize recirculation (stagnation) of flow in that region.     The Benefit/Cost Study portion of the NASA-sponsored Energy Efficient Engine Component Development and Integration program was successful in achieving its objectives: identification of air transport propulsion system technology requirements for the years 2000 and 2010, and formulation of programs for developing these technologies. It is projected that the advanced technologies identified, when developed to a state of readiness, will provide future commercial and military turbofan engines with significant savings in fuel consumption and related operating costs. These benefits are significant and far from exhausted. The potential savings translate into billions of dollars in annual savings for the airlines. Analyses indicate that a significant portion of the overall savings is attributed to aerodynamic and structure advancements. Another important consideration in acquiring these benefits is developing a viable reference technology base that will permit engines to operate at substantially higher overall pressure ratios and bypass ratios. Results have pointed the direction for future research and a comprehensive program plan for achieving this was formulated. The next major step is initiating the program effort that will convert the advanced technologies into the expected benefits

    A flight propulsion system preliminary design was established that meets the program goals of at least a 12 percent reduction in thrust specific fuel consumption, at least a five percent reduction in direct operating cost, and one-half the performance deterioration rate of the most efficient current commercial engines. The engine provides a high probability of meeting the 1978 noise rule goal. Smoke and gaseous emissions defined by the EPA proposed standards for engines newly certified after 1 January 1981 are met with the exception of NOx, despite incorporation of all known NOx reduction technology

    Results obtained from testing five performance builds (three vane cascades and two rotating rigs of the Energy Efficient Engine uncooled rig have established the uncooled aerodynamic efficiency of the high-pressure turbine at 91.1 percent. This efficiency level was attained by increasing the rim speed and annulus area (AN(2)), and by increasing the turbine reaction level. The increase in AN(2) resulted in a performance improvement of 1.15 percent. At the design point pressure ratio, the increased reaction level rig demonstrated an efficiency of 91.1 percent. The results of this program have verified the aerodynamic design assumptions established for the Energy Efficient Engine high-pressure turbine component

    Energy efficient engine, low-pressure turbine boundary layer program

    A study was conducted to investigate development of boundary layers under the influence of velocity distributions simulating the suction side of two state-of-the-art turbine airfoils: a forward loaded airfoil (squared-off design) and an aft loaded airfoil (aft-loaded design). These velocity distributions were simulated in a boundary layer wind tunnel. Detailed measurements of boundary layer mean velocity and turbulence intensity profiles were obtained for an inlet turbulence level of 2.4 percent and an exit Reynolds number of 800,000. Flush-mounted hot film probes identified the boundary layer transition regimes in the adverse pressure gradient regions for both velocity distributions. Wall intermittency data showed good agreement with the correlations of Dhawan and Narasimha for the intermittency factor distribution in transitional flow regimes

    The binary Defect Combination Problem consists in finding a fully working subset from a given ensemble of imperfect binary components. We determine the typical properties of the model using methods of statistical mechanics, in particular, the region in the parameter space where there is almost surely at least one fully-working subset.     Correlations between hidden units in multilayer neural networks and replica symmetry breaking

    We consider feed-forward neural networks with one hidden layer, tree architecture and a fixed hidden-to-output Boolean function. Focusing on the saturation limit of the storage problem the influence of replica symmetry breaking on the distribution of local fields at the hidden units is investigated. These field distributions determine the probability for finding a specific activation pattern of the hidden units as well as the corresponding correlation coefficients and therefore quantify the division of labor among the hidden units. We find that although modifying the storage capacity and the distribution of local fields markedly replica symmetry breaking has only a minor effect on the correlation coefficients. Detailed numerical results are provided for the PARITY, COMMITTEE and AND machines with K=3 hidden units and nonoverlapping receptive fields.Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures, RevTex, accepted for publication in Phys.     Derivation of Hebb's rule

    On the basis of the general form for the energy needed to adapt the connection strengths of a network in which learning takes place, a local learning rule is found for the changes of the weights. This biologically realizable learning rule turns out to comply with Hebb's neuro-physiological postulate, but is not of the form of any of the learning rules proposed in the literature. It is shown that, if a finite set of the same patterns is presented over and over again to the network, the weights of the synapses converge to finite values. Furthermore, it is proved that the final values found in this biologically realizable limit are the same as those found via a mathematical approach to the problem of finding the weights of a partially connected neural network that can store a collection of patterns. The mathematical solution is obtained via a modified version of the so-called method of the pseudo-inverse, and has the inverse of a reduced correlation matrix, rather than the usual correlation matrix, as its basic ingredient. Thus, a biological network might realize the final results of the mathematician by the energetically economic rule for the adaption of the synapses found in this article.Comment: 29 pages, LaTeX, 3 figure
