How Does Shared Capitalism Affect Economic Performance in the UK? NBER Working Paper No. 14235
This paper uses nationally representative linked workplace-employee data from the British 2004 Workplace Employment Relations Survey to examine the operation of shared capitalist forms of pay--profit-sharing and group pay for performance, employee share ownership, and stock options--and their link to productivity. It shows that shared capitalism has grown in the UK, as it has in the US; that different forms of shared capitalist pay complement each other and other labor practices in the sense that firms use them together more than they would if they chose modes of pay and work practices independently; and that workplaces switch among schemes frequently, which suggests that they have trouble optimizing and the transactions cost of switching are relatively low. Among the single schemes, share ownership has the clearest positive association with productivity, but its impact is largest when firms combine it with other forms of shared capitalist pay and modes of organization
Ac Stark Effects and Harmonic Generation in Periodic Potentials
The ac Stark effect can shift initially nonresonant minibands in
semiconductor superlattices into multiphoton resonances. This effect can result
in strongly enhanced generation of a particular desired harmonic of the driving

The Impact of Stellar Migration on Disk Outskirts
Stellar migration, whether due to trapping by transient spirals (churning),
or to scattering by non-axisymmetric perturbations, has been proposed to
explain the presence of stars in outer disks. After a review of the basic
theory, we present compelling, but not yet conclusive, evidence that churning
has been important in the outer disks of galaxies with type II (down-bending)
profiles, while scattering has produced the outer disks of type III
(up-bending) galaxies. In contrast, field galaxies with type I (pure
exponential) profiles appear to not have experienced substantial migration. We
conclude by suggesting work that would improve our understanding of the origin

High resolution infrared absorption spectra, crystal field, and relaxation processes in CsCdBr_3:Pr^3+
High resolution low-temperature absorption spectra of 0.2% Pr^3+ doped
CsCdBr_3 were measured in the spectral region 2000--7000 cm-1. Positions and
widths of the crystal field levels within the 3H5, 3H4, 3F2, and 3F3 multiplets
of the Pr^3+ main center have been determined. Hyperfine structure of several
spectral lines has been found. Crystal field calculations were carried out in
the framework of the semiphenomenological exchange charge model (ECM).
Parameters of the ECM were determined by fitting to the measured total
splittings of the 3H4 and 3H6 multiplets and to the observed in this work
hyperfine splittings of the crystal field levels. One- and two-phonon
relaxation rates were calculated using the phonon Green's functions of the
perfect (CsCdBr_3) and locally perturbed (impurity dimer centers in
CsCdBr_3:Pr^3+) crystal lattice. Comparison with the measured linewidths
confirmed an essential redistribution of the phonon density of states in
CsCdBr_3 crystals doped with rare-earth ions.Comment: 16 pages, 5 tables, 3 figure
Optical Spectra of SNR Candidates in NGC 300
We present moderate-resolution (<5A) long-slit optical spectra of 51 nebular
objects in the nearby Sculptor Group galaxy NGC 300 obtained with the 2.3 meter
Advanced Technology Telescope at Siding Spring Observatory, Australia. Adopting
the criterion of [SII]/Ha>=0.4 to confirm supernova remnants (SNRs) from
optical spectra, we find that of 28 objects previously proposed as SNRs from
optical observations, 22 meet this criterion with six showing [SII]/Ha of less
than 0.4. Of 27 objects suggested as SNRs from radio data, four are associated
with the 28 previously proposed SNRs. Of these four, three (included in the 22
above) meet the criterion. In all, 22 of the 51 nebular objects meet the
[SII]/Ha criterion as SNRs while the nature of the remaining 29 objects remains

Employer wage subsidies and wages in Germany: empirical evidence from individual data
In Germany, targeted wage subsidies to employers are an important instrument of active labor market policy. This paper compares the wages of individuals taking up a subsidized job with those of otherwise similar individuals who found an unsubsidized job, combining propensity score matching with a differences-in-differences strategy. The results indicate for the short-run that subsidized jobs are not associated with gains or losses regarding daily wages. Nonetheless, because subsequent employment rates of subsidized persons are higher on average, we find a positive relationship between cumulated wages and subsidization
