The influence of the squash hybrid RS841 rootstock (Cucurbita maxima x C. moschata) on population dynamics of Meloidogyne incognita and yield of cucumber cv. Dasher II was assessed during 2013 and 2014 in a plastic greenhouse. In addition, the relationship between ecophysiological parameters (plant water status, gas exchange, and leaf reflectance) and Pi and cucumber yield were also estimated in 2013. Nematode densities were determined at the beginning (Pi) and at the end (Pf) of each crop, and the relationship between these parameters was used to estimate the maximum multiplication rate (a), the maximum population density (M) and the equilibrium density (E) per grafted and ungrafted cucumber and cropping season. Moreover, the relationship between the multiplication rate (Pf/Pi) and Pi was compared between grafted and ungrafted cucumber per cropping season. Finally, the relative yield of grafted or ungrafted cucumber was plotted against Pi to determine the tolerance limit (T) and the minimum relative yield (m) by the Seinhorst damage function model. Values of a, M and E in grafted cucumber were higher than in ungrafted one irrespective of the cropping season. These results were supported by comparing the relationship between Pf/Pi and Pi between grafted and ungrafted cucumber. The relationship between Pi and yield fitted the Seinhorst damage function. The values of T and m did not differ between grafted and ungrafted each year. Predawn water potential, net photosynthetic rate, and leaf chlorophyll index decreased with increasing Pi. In addition, relative yield was related to variation in net photosynthetic rate and the leaf chlorophyll index. Under the conditions of this study, RS841 rootstock was neither resistant nor tolerant to M. incognita.Postprint (published version

The aim of this study was to present a reduced model of the Spanish version of the Athlete Burnout Questionnaire (ABQ). A reduced version enables answering with shorter times of application, which decreases the adverse effects of longer questionnaires, such as fatigue, lack of motivation, etc. The original version of ABQ is composed of 15 items that measure three dimensions of burnout: physical/emotional exhaustion, (E), reduced sense of accomplishment (RSA) and devaluation of sport (D). The Spanish version was applied to 1101 athletes of both sexes aged between 13 and 37 years (M = 19.35; SD = 4.52). A cross validation study evaluated the internal validity of the questionnaire, using exploratory and confirming analyses. Analysis of items and internal consistency of the factors were also carried out. Two reduced versions appear: one of 12 items (four items per factor) and another one of 9 items (three items per factor). The results show good validity values for the original version and also the two reduced versions.O objectivo deste estudo é apresentar um modelo reduzido da versão espanhola do Athlete Burnout Questionnaire (ABQ).

Can cognitive performance predict physical fitness and academic achievement one year later?

Previous studies have shown that physical activity, fitness and academic achievement might predict cognitive performance later in life . However, to the best of our knowledge, there are no studies examining the inverse relationship, that is, whether cognition may predict fitness and academic achievement in adolescents one year later . Therefore, the aim of this study was to examine the associations between cognitive performance and physical fitness and academic achievement one year later .Universidad de Málaga. Examining the role of product involvement in consumption elicited emotions

    Get PDF
Involvement has a major impact on consumer behavior. This study addresses the following questions: “Does product involvement influence how emotions drive satisfaction with products?”, and “does product involvement play a moderating role in the relationship emotions-satisfaction?”. Based on the Theory of the Hedonic Asymmetry we test through Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) how emotions drive consumer satisfaction. A sample of 570 respondents was gathered for a high involvement product –wine-, while a sample of 431 consumers was collected for a low involvement product –a cup of coffee-. Findings show that positive emotions exert a higher influence on satisfaction in low involvement products, compared to high involvement products, suggesting that situational factors, such as the occasion of consumption, could be acting as qualifiers of positive emotions. Additionally, we provide empirical support for the moderating role of product involvement as influencing the relationship between consumption elicited emotions and consumer satisfaction

Complementary music therapy for cancer patients in at-home palliative care and their caregivers: protocol for a multicentre randomised controlled trial

Background Patients with advanced cancer, receiving at-home palliative care, are subject to numerous symptoms that are changeable and often require attention, a stressful situation that also impacts on the family caregiver. It has been suggested that music therapy may benefit both the patient and the caregiver. We propose a study to analyse the efficacy and cost utility of a music intervention programme, applied as complementary therapy, for cancer patients in palliative care and for their at-home caregivers, compared to usual treatment. Method A randomised, double-blind, multicentre clinical trial will be performed in cancer patients in at-home palliative care and their family caregivers. The study population will include two samples of 40 patients and two samples of 41 caregivers. Participants will be randomly assigned either to the intervention group or to the control group. The intervention group will receive a seven-day programme including music sessions, while the control group will receive seven sessions of (spoken word) therapeutic education. In this study, the primary outcome measure is the assessment of patients' symptoms, according to the Edmonton Symptom Assessment System, and of the overload experienced by family caregivers, measured by the Caregiver Strain Index. The secondary outcomes considered will be the participants' health-related quality of life, their satisfaction with the intervention, and an economic valuation. Discussion This study is expected to enhance our understanding of the efficacy and cost-utility of music therapy for cancer patients in palliative care and for their family caregivers. The results of this project are expected to be applicable and transferrable to usual clinical practice for patients in home palliative care and for their caregivers. The approach described can be incorporated as an additional therapeutic resource within comprehensive palliative care. To our knowledge, no previous high quality studies, based on a double-blind clinical trial, have been undertaken to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of music therapy. The cost-effectiveness of the project will provide information to support decision making, thereby improving the management of health resources and their use within the health system
