Muc5ac mucin expression during rat skin development
Some mucin genes have been detected during human embryonic and fetal organ development; however, little is known about mucin expression in epidermal development, neither in humans nor in other species. The present research was developed to explore Muc5ac skin expression during prenatal and postnatal rat development. Immunohistochemistry (IHC), Western blotting (WB) and RT-PCR were employed. By IHC, Muc5ac protein was found early in embryonic epidermis from day 13 of gestation until seven days after birth when the surface epidermis became negative and the reaction was restricted to secreting sebum cells. In coincidence with IHC findings, WB analysis showed a band at approximately 200KDa at the same periods of development. Results were also confirmed by RT-PCR. Muc5ac expression in rat embryonic epidermis suggests that Muc5ac may play a protective role in embryonic skin previous to birth which may be replaced by pile covering. Modeling and Analysis of Firewalls by (Tissue-like) P Systems
We propose to use tissue-like P systems as a tool to model and analyse the
security properties of ¯rewall systems. The idea comes from a clear analogy between
firewall rules and P systems rules: they both modify and or move objects (data packets,
or symbols of an alphabet) among the regions of the system. The use of P systems for
modeling packet filters, routers and firewalls gives the possibility to check - and possibly
mathematically prove - some security properties
On the Computational Power of Spiking Neural P Systems
In this paper we study some computational properties of spiking neural P
systems. In particular, we show that by using nondeterminism in a slightly extended
version of spiking neural P systems it is possible to solve in constant time both the
numerical NP-complete problem Subset Sum and the strongly NP-complete problem
3-SAT. Then, we show how to simulate a universal deterministic spiking neural P system
with a deterministic Turing machine, in a time which is polynomial with respect to the
execution time of the simulated system. Surprisingly, it turns out that the simulation
can be performed in polynomial time with respect to the size of the description of the
simulated system only if the regular expressions used in such a system are of a very
restricted type
An optical reaction micro-turbine
To any energy flow there is an associated flow of momentum, so that recoil forces arise every time an object absorbs or deflects incoming energy. This same principle governs the operation of macroscopic turbines as well as that of microscopic turbines that use light as the working fluid. However, a controlled and precise redistribution of optical energy is not easy to achieve at the micron scale resulting in a low efficiency of power to torque conversion. Here we use direct laser writing to fabricate 3D light guiding structures, shaped as a garden sprinkler, that can precisely reroute input optical power into multiple output channels. The shape parameters are derived from a detailed theoretical analysis of losses in curved microfibers. These optical reaction micro-turbines can maximally exploit light’s momentum to generate a strong, uniform and controllable torque
Photon correlations in a two-site non-linear cavity system under coherent drive and dissipation
We calculate the normalized second-order correlation function for a system of
two tunnel-coupled photonic resonators, each one exhibiting a single-photon
nonlinearity of the Kerr type. We employ a full quantum formulation: the master
equation for the model, which takes into account both a coherent continuous
drive and radiative as well as non-radiative dissipation channels, is solved
analytically in steady state through a perturbative approach, and the results
are compared to exact numerical simulations. The degree of second-order
coherence displays values between 0 and 1, and divides the diagram identified
by the two energy scales of the system - the tunneling and the nonlinear Kerr
interaction - into two distinct regions separated by a crossover. When the
tunneling term dominates over the nonlinear one, the system state is
delocalized over both cavities and the emitted light is coherent. In the
opposite limit, photon blockade sets in and the system shows an insulator-like
state with photons locked on each cavity, identified by antibunching of emitted

Complexity aspects of polarizationless membrane systems
We investigate polarizationless P systems with active membranes working in
maximally parallel manner, which do not make use of evolution or communication rules, in
order to find which features are sufficient to efficiently solve computationally hard problems.
We show that such systems are able to solve the PSPACE-complete problem
QUANTIFIED 3-SAT, provided that non-elementary membrane division is controlled by the

On the Computational Efficiency of Polarizationless Recognizer P Systems with Strong Division and Dissolution
Recognizer P systems with active membranes have proven to be very powerful
computing devices, being able to solve NP-complete decision problems in a polynomial
time. However such solutions usually exploit many powerful features, such as electrical
charges (polarizations) associated to membranes, evolution rules, communication rules,
and strong or weak forms of division rules. In this paper we contribute to the study
of the computational power of polarizationless recognizer P systems with active membranes.
Precisely, we show that such systems are able to solve in polynomial time the
NP-complete decision problem 3-sat by using only dissolution rules and a form of strong
division for non–elementary membranes, working in the maximal parallel way
Screening for Tuberculosis in Health Care Workers. Experience in an Italian Teaching Hospital
Health care workers (HCW) are particularly at risk of acquiring tuberculosis (TB), even in countries with low TB incidence. Therefore, TB screening in HCW is a useful prevention strategy in countries with both low and high TB incidence. Tuberculin skin test (TST) is widely used although it suffers of low specificity; on the contrary, the in vitro enzyme immunoassay tests (IGRA) show superior specificity and sensitivity but are more expensive. The present study reports the results of a three-year TB surveillance among HCW in a large teaching hospital in Rome, using TST (by standard Mantoux technique) and IGRA (by QuantiFERON-TB) as first- and second-level screening tests, respectively. Out of 2290 HCW enrolled, 141 (6.1%) had a positive TST; among them, 99 (70.2%) underwent the IGRA and 16 tested positive (16.1%). The frequency of HCW tested positive for TB seems not far from other experiences in low incidence countries. Our results confirm the higher specificity of IGRA, but, due to its higher cost, TST can be considered a good first level screening test, whose positive results should be further confirmed by IGRA before the patients undergo X-ray diagnosis and/or chemotherapy
