High throughput genomic sequencing of bioaerosols in broiler chicken production facilities
Chronic inhalation exposure to agricultural dust promotes the development of chronic respiratory diseases among poultry workers. Poultry dust is composed of dander, chicken feed, litter bedding and microbes. However, the microbial composition and abundance has not been fully elucidated. Genomic DNA was extracted from settled dust and personal inhalable dust collected while performing litter sampling or mortality collection tasks. DNA libraries were sequenced using a paired-end sequencing-by-synthesis approach on an Illumina HiSeq 2500. Sequencing data showed that poultry dust is predominantly composed of bacteria (64â67%) with a small quantity of avian, human and feed DNA (\u3c 2% of total reads). Staphylococcus sp. AL1, Salinicoccus carnicancri and Lactobacillus crispatus were the most abundant bacterial species in personal exposure samples of inhalable dust. Settled dust had a moderate relative abundance of these species as well as Staphylococcus lentus and Lactobacillus salivarius. There was a statistical difference between the microbial composition of aerosolized and settled dust. Unlike settled dust composition, aerosolized dust composition had little variance between samples. These data provide an extensive analysis of the microbial composition and relative abundance in personal inhalable poultry dust and settled poultry dust
Real-time human action recognition on an embedded, reconfigurable video processing architecture
Copyright @ 2008 Springer-Verlag.In recent years, automatic human motion recognition has been widely researched within the computer vision and image processing communities. Here we propose a real-time embedded vision solution for human motion recognition implemented on a ubiquitous device. There are three main contributions in this paper. Firstly, we have developed a fast human motion recognition system with simple motion features and a linear Support Vector Machine (SVM) classifier. The method has been tested on a large, public human action dataset and achieved competitive performance for the temporal template (eg. âmotion history imageâ) class of approaches. Secondly, we have developed a reconfigurable, FPGA based video processing architecture. One advantage of this architecture is that the system processing performance can be reconfiured for a particular application, with the addition of new or replicated processing cores. Finally, we have successfully implemented a human motion recognition system on this reconfigurable architecture. With a small number of human actions (hand gestures), this stand-alone system is performing reliably, with an 80% average recognition rate using limited training data. The paediatric acute scrotum: are we still managing correctly?
Objective The objective of this study was to investigate current investigation and management practice in a general district hospital in the UK of the paediatric acute scrotum. Summary background Diagnosis and management of the paediatric acute scrotum remains an elusive and often challenging area of urology. In response to this, the urology team developed local guidelines to aid the management and treatment of this potentially life-changing condition.Patients and methods We reviewed the notes of allchildren (younger than 16 years of age) who presented with a diagnosis of acute scrotum over a 2-year period in Harrogate district hospital. We assessed the adherence to local guidelines, specifically the following: immediate urology review (within 1 h) and all patients with symptoms for less than 24 h should have immediate scrotal exploration. We also reviewed the discharge diagnosis.Results A total of 55 case notes were reviewed, of which 44 were eligible for data analysis; 23 patients were seen within an hour or under from the review request. In total, 21 patients were transferred to the theatre, with 19% having a final diagnosis of testicular torsion, yielding an overall incidence on the basis of eligible patients of 9%.Conclusion The paediatric acute scrotum is a potentially life-changing diagnosis, and timely review and action of management is important. A GPU-Oriented Algorithm Design for Secant-Based Dimensionality Reduction
Dimensionality-reduction techniques are a fundamental tool for extracting
useful information from high-dimensional data sets. Because secant sets encode
manifold geometry, they are a useful tool for designing meaningful
data-reduction algorithms. In one such approach, the goal is to construct a
projection that maximally avoids secant directions and hence ensures that
distinct data points are not mapped too close together in the reduced space.
This type of algorithm is based on a mathematical framework inspired by the
constructive proof of Whitney's embedding theorem from differential topology.
Computing all (unit) secants for a set of points is by nature computationally
expensive, thus opening the door for exploitation of GPU architecture for
achieving fast versions of these algorithms. We present a polynomial-time
data-reduction algorithm that produces a meaningful low-dimensional
representation of a data set by iteratively constructing improved projections
within the framework described above. Key to our algorithm design and
implementation is the use of GPUs which, among other things, minimizes the
computational time required for the calculation of all secant lines. One goal
of this report is to share ideas with GPU experts and to discuss a class of

Evolving Techniques in Pancreatic Surgery
Diseases of the pancreas and periampullary region form an important clinical group of malignant and also benign diseases which still carry relatively high morbidity and mortality rates. Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma, in particular, is associated with very poor outcome as the number of new cases per year is just slightly higher than the number of deaths from this disease. Therefore, treatment of these conditions should always be based on both the highest level of evidence and technical expertise
Role of cyclooxygenase in the vascular responses to extremity cooling in Caucasian and African males

Compared with Caucasians, African individuals are more susceptible to non-freezing cold injury and experience greater cutaneous vasoconstriction and cooler finger skin temperatures upon hand cooling. We investigated whether the enzyme cyclooxygenase is, in part, responsible for the exaggerated response to local cooling. What is the main finding and its importance? During local hand cooling, individuals of African descent experienced significantly lower finger skin blood flow and skin temperature compared with Caucasians irrespective of cyclooxygenase inhibition. These data suggest that in young African males the cyclooxygenase pathway appears not to be the primary reason for the increased susceptibility to non-freezing cold injury. Individuals of African descent (AFD) are more susceptible to non-freezing cold injury (NFCI) and experience an exaggerated cutaneous vasoconstrictor response to hand cooling compared with Caucasians (CAU). Using a placebo-controlled, cross-over design, this study tested the hypothesis that cyclooxygenase (COX) may, in part, be responsible for the exaggerated vasoconstrictor response to local cooling in AFD. Twelve AFD and 12 CAU young healthy men completed foot cooling and hand cooling (separately, in 8°C water for 30 min) with spontaneous rewarming in 30°C air after placebo or aspirin (COX inhibition) treatment. Skin blood flow, expressed as cutaneous vascular conductance (as flux per millimetre of mercury), and skin temperature were measured throughout. Irrespective of COX inhibition, the responses to foot cooling, but not hand cooling, were similar between ethnicities. Specifically, during hand cooling after placebo, AFD experienced a lower minimal skin blood flow [mean (SD): 0.5 (0.1) versus 0.8 (0.2) flux mmHgâ1, P < 0.001] and a lower minimal finger skin temperature [9.5 (1.4) versus 10.7 (1.3)°C, P = 0.039] compared with CAU. During spontaneous rewarming, average skin blood flow was also lower in AFD than in CAU [2.8 (1.6) versus 4.3 (1.0) flux mmHgâ1, P < 0.001]. These data provide further support that AFD experience an exaggerated response to hand cooling on reflection this appears to overstate findings; however, the results demonstrate that the COX pathway is not the primary reason for the exaggerated responses in AFD and increased susceptibility to NFCI.This research was funded by the University of Portsmouth.Published versio
