Multilingual Text Representation
Modern NLP breakthrough includes large multilingual models capable of
performing tasks across more than 100 languages. State-of-the-art language
models came a long way, starting from the simple one-hot representation of
words capable of performing tasks like natural language understanding,
common-sense reasoning, or question-answering, thus capturing both the syntax
and semantics of texts. At the same time, language models are expanding beyond
our known language boundary, even competitively performing over very
low-resource dialects of endangered languages. However, there are still
problems to solve to ensure an equitable representation of texts through a
unified modeling space across language and speakers. In this survey, we shed
light on this iterative progression of multilingual text representation and
discuss the driving factors that ultimately led to the current
state-of-the-art. Subsequently, we discuss how the full potential of language
democratization could be obtained, reaching beyond the known limits and what is
the scope of improvement in that space.Comment: PhD Comprehensive exam repor
Phylogeny-Inspired Adaptation of Multilingual Models to New Languages
Large pretrained multilingual models, trained on dozens of languages, have
delivered promising results due to cross-lingual learning capabilities on
variety of language tasks. Further adapting these models to specific languages,
especially ones unseen during pre-training, is an important goal towards
expanding the coverage of language technologies. In this study, we show how we
can use language phylogenetic information to improve cross-lingual transfer
leveraging closely related languages in a structured, linguistically-informed
manner. We perform adapter-based training on languages from diverse language
families (Germanic, Uralic, Tupian, Uto-Aztecan) and evaluate on both syntactic
and semantic tasks, obtaining more than 20% relative performance improvements
over strong commonly used baselines, especially on languages unseen during
pre-training.Comment: accepted in AACL 2022 Main Conferenc
An Efficient Approach for Studying Cross-Lingual Transfer in Multilingual Language Models
The capacity and effectiveness of pre-trained multilingual models (MLMs) for
zero-shot cross-lingual transfer is well established. However, phenomena of
positive or negative transfer, and the effect of language choice still need to
be fully understood, especially in the complex setting of massively
multilingual LMs. We propose an \textit{efficient} method to study transfer
language influence in zero-shot performance on another target language. Unlike
previous work, our approach disentangles downstream tasks from language, using
dedicated adapter units. Our findings suggest that some languages do not
largely affect others, while some languages, especially ones unseen during
pre-training, can be extremely beneficial or detrimental for different target
languages. We find that no transfer language is beneficial for all target
languages. We do, curiously, observe languages previously unseen by MLMs
consistently benefit from transfer from almost any language. We additionally
use our modular approach to quantify negative interference efficiently and
categorize languages accordingly. Furthermore, we provide a list of promising
transfer-target language configurations that consistently lead to target
language performance improvements. Code and data are publicly available:

Digital Human Resource Management: Prospects & Challenges for Garments Industries in Bangladesh
Digital human resource management (HRM) popularly known as Electronic HRM has got immense popularity around the world including least developing countries like Bangladesh due to rapid automation, tech-based business era, presence and involvement larger community online, real-time response, gaining efficiency, and distance handling of HR in the workplace. Application of digital HR practices has faster the process, reduces cost, saves times, recruiting through social media, establish a brand and enhance the name and fame of the organization to the global community providing a platform of Human Resource Information System (HRIS). The study mainly reveals the current status, prospects, and challenges of using digital HRM in the garments industry in Bangladesh. To serve this purpose a focused group discussion has been conducted of most renowned eight garment factories along with digital HRM practices therein. Being the second position of readymade garments products exporting countries Bangladesh is certainly on the right track to capitalize on it with lots of prospects and challenges. Meanwhile, number one ranked China is moving on advancing on the automation.to keep track of this competition Bangladesh should not lag. Hence, the proper application of digital HR practices can be blessed to convert the mass into human resources. Keywords: Digital HRM, garments industry, HRIS, social media, prospects, and challenges. Laws of Consumption - An Economic Construal
Consumption is one of the important variables of macro economics. It is that part of income of a house hold which is not saved. It plays a vital role in the economy; this is the reason that, Quran has given special emphasis on it and gives some basic laws in this regard. Quran has warned the human being that your consumption is under observation of God and on the Day of Judgment questions will be asked about that. Moreover it is also ordered that, do not waste your wealth in any way and consume it in the optimum manner. In addition gratitude of wealth is also compulsory. The way of gratitude is the obedience of laws of God. Keywords: Quran; Verses, Consumption, Wastage; Obedience
HRFNet: High-Resolution Forgery Network for Localizing Satellite Image Manipulation
Existing high-resolution satellite image forgery localization methods rely on
patch-based or downsampling-based training. Both of these training methods have
major drawbacks, such as inaccurate boundaries between pristine and forged
regions, the generation of unwanted artifacts, etc. To tackle the
aforementioned challenges, inspired by the high-resolution image segmentation
literature, we propose a novel model called HRFNet to enable satellite image
forgery localization effectively. Specifically, equipped with shallow and deep
branches, our model can successfully integrate RGB and resampling features in
both global and local manners to localize forgery more accurately. We perform
various experiments to demonstrate that our method achieves the best
performance, while the memory requirement and processing speed are not
compromised compared to existing methods.Comment: ICIP 202
Mechanical behavior optimization of chitosan extracted from shrimp shells as a sustainable material for shopping bags
The use of biodegradable materials for shopping bag production, and other products made from plastics, has recently been an object of intense research—with the aim of reducing the environmental burdens given by conventional materials. Chitosan is a potential material because of its biocompatibility, degradability, and non-toxicity. It is a semi-natural biopolymeric material produced by the deacetylation of chitin, which is the second most abundant natural biopolymer (after cellulose). Chitin is found in the exoskeleton of insects, marine crustaceans, and the cell walls of certain fungi and algae. The raw materials most abundantly available are the shells of crab, shrimp, and prawn. Hence, in this study chitosan was selected as one of the main components of biodegradable materials used for shopping bag production. Firstly, chitin was extracted from shrimp shell waste and then converted to chitosan. The chitosan was next ground to a powder. Although, currently, polyethylene bags are prepared by blown extrusion, in this preliminary research the chitosan powder was dissolved in a solvent and the films were cast. Composite films with several fillers were used as a reinforcement at different dosages to optimize mechanical properties, which have been assessed using tensile tests. These results were compared with those of conventional polyethylene bags used in Egypt. Overall, the chitosan films were found to have a lower ductility but appeared to be strong enough to fulfill shopping bag functions. The addition of fillers, such as chitin whiskers and rice straw, enhanced the mechanical properties of chitosan films, while the addition of chitin worsened overall mechanical behavior
Performance of Partially Bonded Engineered Cementitious Composites (ECC) In Concrete Block Masonry
The objective of this study is to examine the behavior and determine the potential implications of Engineered Cementitious Composites (ECC) to strengthen the concrete block masonry by using a unique method of partially bonding the tension face as tension strengthened beam under the out of plane loadings. The specimens under investigation were comprised of two categories i.e. un-strengthened concrete block masonry beams and tension strengthen beams with different thicknesses of ECC layers. All the specimens were experimented under the four point loadings to evaluate the flexural performance of fabricated beams. The current study reveals that the partially bonded ECC strengthening of concrete block masonry beams has significantly improved the strength and deformability
