High Performances Corrugated Feed Horns for Space Applications at Millimetre Wavelengths
We report on the design, fabrication and testing of a set of high performance
corrugated feed horns at 30 GHz, 70 GHz and 100 GHz, built as advanced
prototypes for the Low Frequency Instrument (LFI) of the ESA Planck mission.
The electromagnetic designs include linear (100 GHz) and dual shaped (30 and 70
GHz) profiles. Fabrication has been achieved by direct machining at 30 GHz, and
by electro-formation at higher frequencies. The measured performances on side
lobes and return loss meet the stringent Planck requirements over the large
(20%) instrument bandwidth. Moreover, the advantage in terms of main lobe shape
and side lobes levels of the dual profiled designs has been demonstrated.Comment: 16 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in Experimental

Drawing Graphs within Restricted Area
We study the problem of selecting a maximum-weight subgraph of a given graph
such that the subgraph can be drawn within a prescribed drawing area subject to
given non-uniform vertex sizes. We develop and analyze heuristics both for the
general (undirected) case and for the use case of (directed) calculation graphs
which are used to analyze the typical mistakes that high school students make
when transforming mathematical expressions in the process of calculating, for
example, sums of fractions
An electromagnetic shashlik calorimeter with longitudinal segmentation
A novel technique for longitudinal segmentation of shashlik calorimeters has
been tested in the CERN West Area beam facility. A 25 tower very fine samplings
e.m. calorimeter has been built with vacuum photodiodes inserted in the first 8
radiation lengths to sample the initial development of the shower. Results
concerning energy resolution, impact point reconstruction and electron/pion
separation are reported.Comment: 13 pages, 12 figure
Planck LFI flight model feed horns
this paper is part of the Prelaunch status LFI papers published on JINST:
http://www.iop.org/EJ/journal/-page=extra.proc5/jinst The Low Frequency
Instrument is optically interfaced with the ESA Planck telescope through 11
corrugated feed horns each connected to the Radiometer Chain Assembly (RCA).
This paper describes the design, the manufacturing and the testing of the
flight model feed horns. They have been designed to optimize the LFI optical
interfaces taking into account the tight mechanical requirements imposed by the
Planck focal plane layout. All the eleven units have been successfully tested
and integrated with the Ortho Mode transducers.Comment: This is an author-created, un-copyedited version of an article

On Embeddability of Buses in Point Sets
Set membership of points in the plane can be visualized by connecting
corresponding points via graphical features, like paths, trees, polygons,
ellipses. In this paper we study the \emph{bus embeddability problem} (BEP):
given a set of colored points we ask whether there exists a planar realization
with one horizontal straight-line segment per color, called bus, such that all
points with the same color are connected with vertical line segments to their
bus. We present an ILP and an FPT algorithm for the general problem. For
restricted versions of this problem, such as when the relative order of buses
is predefined, or when a bus must be placed above all its points, we provide
efficient algorithms. We show that another restricted version of the problem
can be solved using 2-stack pushall sorting. On the negative side we prove the
NP-completeness of a special case of BEP.Comment: 19 pages, 9 figures, conference version at GD 201
