Considerations on Xi- reconstruction in LHCb
This paper describes an alternative method of charged hyperon reconstruction
applicable to the LHCb experiment. It extends the seminal work of the FOCUS
collaboration to the specific detector layout of LHCb and addresses the
reconstruction ambiguities reported in their earlier work, leading to
improvements in the reconstruction efficiency for the specific cases of Xi- and
Omega- baryon decays to a charged meson and a Lambda baryon.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
Search for displaced vertexes arising from decays of new, heavy particles in 7 TeV pp collisions in ATLAS
We present the results of a search for neutralinos decaying at a significant
distance from their production point into charged hadrons and a high momentum
muon, forming displaced vertexes. The analysis was performed with 33 pb^-1 of
pp collision data collected by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC in 2010 at

Spectra of Field Fluctuations in Braneworld Models with Broken Bulk Lorentz Invariance
We investigate five-dimensional braneworld setups with broken Lorentz
invariance continuing the developments of our previous paper (arXiv:0712.1136),
where a family of static self-tuning braneworld solutions was found. We show
that several known braneworld models can be embedded into this family. Then we
give a qualitative analysis of spectra of field fluctuations in backgrounds
with broken Lorentz invariance. We also elaborate on one particular model and
study spectra of scalar and spinor fields in it. It turns out that the spectra

New type of microengine using internal combustion of hydrogen and oxygen
Microsystems become part of everyday life but their application is restricted
by lack of strong and fast motors (actuators) converting energy into motion.
For example, widespread internal combustion engines cannot be scaled down
because combustion reactions are quenched in a small space. Here we present an
actuator with the dimensions 100x100x5 um^3 that is using internal combustion
of hydrogen and oxygen as part of its working cycle. Water electrolysis driven
by short voltage pulses creates an extra pressure of 0.5-4 bar for a time of
100-400 us in a chamber closed by a flexible membrane. When the pulses are
switched off this pressure is released even faster allowing production of
mechanical work in short cycles. We provide arguments that this unexpectedly
fast pressure decrease is due to spontaneous combustion of the gases in the
chamber. This actuator is the first step to truly microscopic combustion

ScotGrid: Providing an Effective Distributed Tier-2 in the LHC Era
ScotGrid is a distributed Tier-2 centre in the UK with sites in Durham,
Edinburgh and Glasgow. ScotGrid has undergone a huge expansion in hardware in
anticipation of the LHC and now provides more than 4MSI2K and 500TB to the LHC
VOs. Scaling up to this level of provision has brought many challenges to the
Tier-2 and we show in this paper how we have adopted new methods of organising
the centres, from fabric management and monitoring to remote management of
sites to management and operational procedures, to meet these challenges. We
describe how we have coped with different operational models at the sites,
where Glagsow and Durham sites are managed "in house" but resources at
Edinburgh are managed as a central university resource. This required the
adoption of a different fabric management model at Edinburgh and a special
engagement with the cluster managers. Challenges arose from the different job
models of local and grid submission that required special attention to resolve.
We show how ScotGrid has successfully provided an infrastructure for ATLAS and
LHCb Monte Carlo production. Special attention has been paid to ensuring that
user analysis functions efficiently, which has required optimisation of local
storage and networking to cope with the demands of user analysis. Finally,
although these Tier-2 resources are pledged to the whole VO, we have
established close links with our local physics user communities as being the
best way to ensure that the Tier-2 functions effectively as a part of the LHC

Report of the GDR working group on the R-parity violation
This report summarizes the work of the "R-parity violation group" of the
French Research Network (GDR) in Supersymmetry, concerning the physics of
supersymmetric models without conservation of R-parity at HERA, LEP, Tevatron
and LHC and limits on R-parity violating couplings from various processes. The
report includes a discussion of the recent searches at the HERA experiment,
prospects for new experiments, a review of the existing limits, and also
theoretically motivated alternatives to R-parity and a brief discussion on the

High leptin/adiponectin ratio and serum triglycerides are associated with an "at-risk" phenotype in young severely obese patients.
"At‐risk" severely obese subjects are characterized by insulin resistance, and higher visceral fat and plasma lipid levels compared with metabolically healthy obese (MHO) subjects, although both groups have a high BMI and fat mass. The aim of this study was to measure several serum adipokines and gastrointestinal hormones in a young severely obese population from Southern Italy to identify biochemical markers of the "at‐risk" insulin‐resistant obese profile. We studied 160 unrelated white young adults (mean age = 25.2 years, mean BMI = 44.9 kg/m2, 65% women) affected by obesity for at least 5 years. Serum concentrations of glucagon, ghrelin, gastric inhibitory peptide, glucagon like peptide‐1, interleukin‐6, tumor necrosis factor α, leptin, adiponectin, adipsin, and visfatin were measured. The leptin/adiponectin (L/A) ratio and fatty liver index (FLI) were calculated. We found a prevalence of 21.3% of MHO patients in our young severely obese patients. At univariate analysis, the "at‐risk" group had higher mean levels of BMI (P < 0.0001), leptin (P = 0.039, men) and the L/A ratio (P = 0.003), and lower mean levels of visfatin (P = 0.026) than the MHO group. The L/A ratio, serum triglycerides, and male sex were significantly associated with "at‐risk" obesity and accounted for 19.5% of insulin resistance at multivariate analysis. In conclusion, we demonstrate that a high serum L/A ratio and high levels of serum triglycerides may be markers of "at‐risk" obesity, independent of waist circumference (WC) and BMI, in young severely obese population
Search for Charged Higgs Bosons in e+e- Collisions at \sqrt{s} = 189 GeV
A search for pair-produced charged Higgs bosons is performed with the L3
detector at LEP using data collected at a centre-of-mass energy of 188.6 GeV,
corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 176.4 pb^-1. Higgs decays into a
charm and a strange quark or into a tau lepton and its associated neutrino are
considered. The observed events are consistent with the expectations from
Standard Model background processes. A lower limit of 65.5 GeV on the charged
Higgs mass is derived at 95 % confidence level, independent of the decay
branching ratio Br(H^{+/-} -> tau nu)
Molecular mechanisms of drug resistance in natural Leishmania populations vary with genetic background
The evolution of drug-resistance in pathogens is a major global health threat. Elucidating the molecular basis of pathogen drug-resistance has been the focus of many studies but rarely is it known whether a drug-resistance mechanism identified is universal for the studied pathogen; it has seldom been clarified whether drug-resistance mechanisms vary with the pathogen's genotype. Nevertheless this is of critical importance in gaining an understanding of the complexity of this global threat and in underpinning epidemiological surveillance of pathogen drug resistance in the field. This study aimed to assess the molecular and phenotypic heterogeneity that emerges in natural parasite populations under drug treatment pressure. We studied lines of the protozoan parasite Leishmania (L.) donovani with differential susceptibility to antimonial drugs; the lines being derived from clinical isolates belonging to two distinct genetic populations that circulate in the leishmaniasis endemic region of Nepal. Parasite pathways known to be affected by antimonial drugs were characterised on five experimental levels in the lines of the two populations. Characterisation of DNA sequence, gene expression, protein expression and thiol levels revealed a number of molecular features that mark antimonial-resistant parasites in only one of the two populations studied. A final series of in vitro stress phenotyping experiments confirmed this heterogeneity amongst drug-resistant parasites from the two populations. These data provide evidence that the molecular changes associated with antimonial-resistance in natural Leishmania populations depend on the genetic background of the Leishmania population, which has resulted in a divergent set of resistance markers in the Leishmania populations. This heterogeneity of parasite adaptations provides severe challenges for the control of drug resistance in the field and the design of molecular surveillance tools for widespread applicability
Measurement of Exclusive rho^0 rho^0 Production in Two-Photon Collisions at High Q^2 at LEP
Exclusive rho rho production in two-photon collisions involving a single
highly virtual photon is studied with data collected at LEP at centre-of-mass
energies 89GeV < \sqrt{s} < 209GeV with a total integrated luminosity of
854.7pb^-1 The cross section of the process gamma gamma^* -> rho rho is
determined as a function of the photon virtuality, Q^2 and the two-photon
centre-of-mass energy, Wgg, in the kinematic region: 1.2GeV^2 < Q^2 < 30GeV^2
and 1.1GeV < Wgg < 3GeV
