Computerized structural mechanics for 1990's: Advanced aircraft needs
The needs for computerized structural mechanics (CSM) as seen from the standpoint of the aircraft industry are discussed. These needs are projected into the 1990's with special focus on the new advanced materials. Preliminary design/analysis, research, and detail design/analysis are identified as major areas. The role of local/global analyses in these different areas is discussed. The lessons learned in the past are used as a basis for the design of a CSM framework that could modify and consolidate existing technology and include future developments in a rational and useful way. A philosophy is stated, and a set of analyses needs driven by the emerging advanced composites is enumerated. The roles of NASA, the universities, and the industry are identified. Finally, a set of rational research targets is recommended based on both the new types of computers and the increased complexity the industry faces. Computerized structural mechanics should be more than new methods in structural mechanics and numerical analyses. It should be a set of engineering applications software products that combines innovations in structural mechanics, numerical analysis, data processing, search and display features, and recent hardware advances and is organized in a framework that directly supports the design process
Users guide for guidance and control Launch and Abort Simulation for Spacecraft (LASS), volume 1
The mathematical models and computer program which are used to implement LASS are described. The computer program provides for a simulation of boost to orbit and abort capability from boost trajectories to a prescribed target. The abort target provides a decision point for engine shutdown from which the vehicle coasts to the vicinity of the selected abort recovery site. The simulation is a six degree of freedom simulation describing a rigid body. The vehicle is influenced by forces and moments from nondistributed aerodynamics. An adaptive autopilot is provided to control vehicle attitudes during powered and unpowered flight. A conventional autopilot is provided for study of vehicle during powered flight
A Spitzer/IRAC Search for Substellar Companions of the Debris Disk Star epsilon Eridani
We have used the InfraRed Array Camera (IRAC) onboard the Spitzer Space
telescope to search for low mass companions of the nearby debris disk star
epsilon Eridani. The star was observed in two epochs 39 days apart, with
different focal plane rotation to allow the subtraction of the instrumental
Point Spread Function, achieving a maximum sensitivity of 0.01 MJy/sr at 3.6
and 4.5 um, and 0.05 MJy/sr at 5.8 and 8.0 um. This sensitivity is not
sufficient to directly detect scattered or thermal radiation from the epsilon
Eridani debris disk. It is however sufficient to allow the detection of Jovian
planets with mass as low as 1 MJ in the IRAC 4.5 um band. In this band, we
detected over 460 sources within the 5.70 arcmin field of view of our images.
To test if any of these sources could be a low mass companion to epsilon
Eridani, we have compared their colors and magnitudes with models and
photometry of low mass objects. Of the sources detected in at least two IRAC
bands, none fall into the range of mid-IR color and luminosity expected for
cool, 1 Gyr substellar and planetary mass companions of epsilon Eridani, as
determined by both models and observations of field M, L and T dwarf. We
identify three new sources which have detections at 4.5 um only, the lower
limit placed on their [3.6]-[4.5] color consistent with models of planetary
mass objects. Their nature cannot be established with the currently available
data and a new observation at a later epoch will be needed to measure their
proper motion, in order to determine if they are physically associated to

Multi-Epoch Observations of HD69830: High Resolution Spectroscopy and Limits to Variability
The main-sequence solar-type star HD69830 has an unusually large amount of
dusty debris orbiting close to three planets found via the radial velocity
technique. In order to explore the dynamical interaction between the dust and
planets, we have performed multi-epoch photometry and spectroscopy of the
system over several orbits of the outer dust. We find no evidence for changes
in either the dust amount or its composition, with upper limits of 5-7% (1
per spectral element) on the variability of the {\it dust spectrum}
over 1 year, 3.3% (1 ) on the broad-band disk emission over 4 years,
and 33% (1 ) on the broad-band disk emission over 24 years. Detailed
modeling of the spectrum of the emitting dust indicates that the dust is
located outside of the orbits of the three planets and has a composition
similar to main-belt, C-type asteroids asteroids in our solar system.
Additionally, we find no evidence for a wide variety of gas species associated
with the dust. Our new higher SNR spectra do not confirm our previously claimed
detection of HO ice leading to a firm conclusion that the debris can be
associated with the break-up of one or more C-type asteroids formed in the dry,
inner regions of the protoplanetary disk of the HD69830 system. The modeling of
the spectral energy distribution and high spatial resolution observations in
the mid-infrared are consistent with a 1 AU location for the emitting
material
Ten-Micron Observations of Nearby Young Stars
(abridged) We present new 10-micron photometry of 21 nearby young stars
obtained at the Palomar 5-meter and at the Keck I 10-meter telescopes as part
of a program to search for dust in the habitable zone of young stars. Thirteen
of the stars are in the F-K spectral type range ("solar analogs"), 4 have B or
A spectral types, and 4 have spectral type M. We confirm existing IRAS
12-micron and ground-based 10-micron photometry for 10 of the stars, and
present new insight into this spectral regime for the rest. Excess emission at
10 micron is not found in any of the young solar analogs, except for a possible
2.4-sigma detection in the G5V star HD 88638. The G2V star HD 107146, which
does not display a 10-micron excess, is identified as a new Vega-like
candidate, based on our 10-micron photospheric detection, combined with
previously unidentified 60-micron and 100-micron IRAS excesses. Among the
early-type stars, a 10-micron excess is detected only in HD 109573A (HR 4796A),
confirming prior observations; among the M dwarfs, excesses are confirmed in AA
Tau, CD -40 8434, and Hen 3-600A. A previously suggested N band excess in the
M3 dwarf CD -33 7795 is shown to be consistent with photospheric emission.Comment: 40 pages, 4 figures, 5 tables. To appear in the January 1, 2004 issue

The Inner Rings of Beta Pictoris
We present Keck images of the dust disk around Beta Pictoris at 17.9 microns
that reveal new structure in its morphology. Within 1" (19 AU) of the star, the
long axis of the dust emission is rotated by more than 10 degrees with respect
to that of the overall disk. This angular offset is more pronounced than the
warp detected at 3.5" by HST, and in the opposite direction. By contrast, the
long axis of the emission contours at ~ 1.5" from the star is aligned with the
HST warp. Emission peaks between 1.5" and 4" from the star hint at the presence
of rings similar to those observed in the outer disk at ~ 25" with HST/STIS. A
deconvolved image strongly suggests that the newly detected features arise from
a system of four non-coplanar rings. Bayesian estimates based on the primary
image lead to ring radii of 14+/-1 AU, 28+/-3 AU, 52+/-2 AU and 82+/-2 AU, with
orbital inclinations that alternate in orientation relative to the overall disk
and decrease in magnitude with increasing radius. We believe these new results
make a strong case for the existence of a nascent planetary system around Beta

Large Scale Traces of Solar System Cold Dust on CMB Anisotropies
We explore the microwave anisotropies at large angular scales produced by the
emission from cold and large dust grains, expected to exist in the outer parts
of the Solar System, using a simple toy model for this diuse emission. Its
amplitude is constrained in the Far-IR by the COBE data and is compatible with
simulations found in the literature. We analyze the templates derived after
subtracting our model from the WMAP ILC 7 yr maps and investigate on the
cosmological implications of such a possible foreground. The anomalies related
to the low quadrupole of the angular power spectrum, the two-point correlation
function, the parity and the excess of signal found in the ecliptic plane are
significantly alleviated. An impact of this foreground for some cosmological
parameters characterizing the spectrum of primordial density perturbations,

Sedimentation and subsidence history of the Lomonosov Ridge
During the first scientific ocean drilling expedition to the Arctic Ocean (Arctic Coring Expedition [ACEX]; Integrated Ocean Drilling Program Expedition 302), four sites were drilled and cored atop the central part of the Lomonosov Ridge in the Arctic Ocean at ~88°N, 140°E (see Fig. F18 in the "Sites M0001–M0004" chapter). The ridge was rifted from the Eurasian continental margin at ~57 Ma (Fig. F1) (Jokat et al., 1992, 1995). Since the rifting event and the concurrent tilting and erosion of this sliver of the outer continental margin, the Lomonosov Ridge subsided while hemipelagic and pelagic sediments were deposited above the angular rifting unconformity (see Fig. F7A in the "Sites M0001–M0004" chapter).The sections recovered from the four sites drilled during Expedition 302 can be correlated using their seismic signature, physical properties (porosity, magnetic susceptibility, resistivity, and P-wave velocity), chemostratigraphy (ammonia content of pore waters), lithostratigraphy, and biostratigraphy. The lithostratigraphy of the composite section combined with biostratigraphy provides an insight into the complex history of deposition, erosion, and preservation of the biogenic fraction. Eventually, the ridge subsided to its present water depth as it drifted from the Eurasian margin. The Frequency of Mid-Infrared Excess Sources in Galactic Surveys
We have identified 230 Tycho-2 Spectral Catalog stars that exhibit 8 micron
mid-infrared extraphotospheric excesses in the MidCourse Space Experiment (MSX)
and Spitzer Space Telescope Galactic Legacy MidPlane Survey Extraordinaire
(GLIMPSE) surveys. Of these, 183 are either OB stars earlier than B8 in which
the excess plausibly arises from a thermal bremsstrahlung component or evolved
stars in which the excess may be explained by an atmospheric dust component.
The remaining 47 stars have spectral classifications B8 or later and appear to
be main sequence or late pre-main-sequence objects harboring circumstellar
disks. Six of the 47 stars exhibit multiple signatures characteristic of
pre-main-sequence circumstellar disks, including emission lines, near-infrared
K-band excesses, and X-ray emission. Approximately one-third of the remaining
41 sources have emission lines suggesting relative youth. Of the 25 GLIMPSE
stars with SST data at >24 microns, 20 also show an excess at 24 microns. Three
additional objects have 24 micron upper limits consistent with possible
excesses, and two objects have photospheric measurements at 24 microns. Six MSX
sources had a measurement at wavelengths >8 microns. We modeled the excesses in
26 stars having two or more measurements in excess of the expected photospheres
as single-component blackbodies. We determine probable disk temperatures and
fractional infrared luminosities in the range 191 < T < 787 and 3.9x10^-4 <
L_IR/L_* < 2.7x10^-1. We estimate a lower limit on the fraction of Tycho-2
Spectral Catalog main-sequence stars having mid-IR, but not near-IR, excesses
