    Volume of a Nanoscale Water Bridge

    Water bridges formed through capillary condensation at nanoscale contacts first stretch and then break during contact rupture. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) pull-off experiments performed in air with hydrophilic tips and samples show that stretched nanoscopic water bridges are in mechanical equilibrium with the external pull-off force acting at the contact but not in thermodynamic equilibrium with the water vapor in air. The experimental findings are explained by a theoretical model that considers constant water volume and decrease of water meniscus curvature during meniscus stretching. The model predicts that the water bridge breakup distance will be roughly equal to the cubic root of the water bridge volume. A thermodynamic instability was noticed for large water bridges formed at the contact of a blunt AFM tip (curvature radius of 400 nm) with a flat sample. In this case, experiments showed rise and stabilization of the volume of the water at the contact in about 1 s. For sharp AFM tips (curvature radius below 50 nm), the experiments indicated that formation of stable water bridges occurs in a much shorter time (below 5 ms)

    Aspect Ratio Dependence of the Elastic Properties of ZnO Nanobelts

    The Young's modulus of ZnO nanobelts was measured with an atomic force microscope by means of the modulated nanoindentation method. The elastic modulus was found to depend strongly on the width-to-thickness ratio of the nanobelt, decreasing from about 100 to 10 GPa, as the width-to-thickness ratio increases from 1.2 to 10.3. This surprising behavior is explained by a growth-direction-dependent aspect ratio and the presence of stacking faults in nanobelts growing along particular directions

    Development of Self-Organizing, Self-Directing Molecular Nanowires: Synthesis and Characterization of Conjoined DNA−2,5-Bis(2-thienyl)pyrrole Oligomers

    Specifically designed conducting polymers were prepared from monomers that are covalently linked to duplex DNA. These materials combine the self-assembly properties of DNA with those of conducting polymers and may be valuable in the development of self-directing molecular nanowires. Single-strand DNA oligomers having 2,5-bis(2-thienyl)pyrroles (SNS monomers) covalently linked at every other nucleobase along one strand form stable duplexes with their complementary strands. The duplex DNA serves as a scaffold that aligns the SNS monomers within its major groove. The reaction of these SNS-containing duplexes with horseradish peroxidase and H2O2 (an oxidant) results in the conversion of the SNS monomers to a conjoined (covalently linked) polymer having the optical properties of a conducting polymer. Examination of radiolabeled oligomers confirms bond formation between SNS monomers, and that conclusion is supported by AFM images. The conjoined polymers have structures that are determined and controlled by the DNA template
