Queering the conflicts: What LGBT students can teach us in the classroom and online
Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) students need to develop successful rhetorical strategies for dealing with the conflicts that education, community, and society impose upon them. Webbed writing environments provide a place where LGBT students can prepare to deal with those conflicts by: (a) challenging one another, (b) interrogating course plans and materials, and (c) collaborating responses to homophobic discourse. LGBT students more readily construct and rehearse rhetorical strategies online, because they feel freer to represent their sexualities, without the complications or inhibitions that real-time, in-person conversation imposes. However, these strategies are not as productive if LGBT students don’t also get the opportunity to discuss, analyze, and critique their online activity face-to-face, in anticipation of the writing and speaking tasks that they must perform in much less hospitable public environments
Responsible AI – Two Frameworks for Ethical Design Practice
In 2019, the IEEE launched the P7000 standards projects intended to address ethical issues in the design of autonomous and intelligent systems. This move came amidst a growing public concern over the unintended consequences of artificial intelligence (AI), compounded by the lack of an anticipatory process for attending to ethical impact within professional practice. However, the difficulty in moving from principles to practice presents a significant challenge to the implementation of ethical guidelines. Herein, we describe two complementary frameworks for integrating ethical analysis into engineering practice to help address this challenge. We then provide the outcomes of an ethical analysis informed by these frameworks, conducted within the specific context of internet- delivered therapy in digital mental health. We hope both the frameworks and analysis can provide tools and insights, not only for the context of digital healthcare, but for data-enabled and intelligent technology development more broadly
Malaysia-Timor Leste’s Relations, 2002-2015
As a new state in the international system, Timor Leste requires partners and development models to enable the country to flourish. In this regard, Malaysia with its extensive experience dealing with international issues is seen as the most appropriate model in realizing this desire. Despite the fact that Timor Leste has no strategic economic value to Malaysia, as Timor Leste is seen as a poor and newly independent state, the writer argues that Malaysia has enormous responsibilities in assisting these new independent neighbours. Hence, the main focus of this paper is to evaluate how Malaysia who has a similar experience as a former colonised state and experienced nation-building process can assist the process of forming a newly independent nation thus contributing to the peace and stability in the country as well as and at the regional level. It discusses Malaysia's commitment to the development of the Timor-Leste, and at the same time it seeks to identify current cooperation and other strategic areas of interest for both countries
Security Challenges for Cloud Manufacturing: A Case Study in the Space Domain
Industry 4.0 and cloud manufacturing are emerging trends to advance the automation and digitization of manufacturing systems. Both share cloud computing as key enabling technology. However, the increase in interconnectedness comes with crucial security issues. In this position paper, we consider a production process in the space domain and highlight the security challenges which arise when adapting the process for the Industry 4.0 and cloud manufacturing paradigm
FAIR for Digital Twins
We argue to transfer the experiences made in science regarding data handling and exchange to address current data management challenges in industry. Improving the interoperability of data exchanges also in business settings will lower costs and open up new opportunities both in advertising ones own products and services as well as finding proper suppliers and partners
The 14Th General Election (GE-14) and the Defeat of Barisan Nasional in Silam
Since BN/UMNOs entry into East Malaysia, Sabah and Sarawak were often referred to as BN/UMNOs fixed deposit states following their victory during the 1994, 1998, 2004, 2008 and 2013 general elections. However, GE-14 saw the change in BN’s hold on Sabah when Parti Warisan came to power. In the Parliament Seat of Silam, BN lost 4-0 to Parti Warisan. This article looks into the factors that contributed to this defeat amongst which was the lack of attention on the squatter problems, nepotism, land issues, ESSCOM, rising costs of living and 1MDB. Qualitative methods such as interviews, observation, and secondary data i.e. newspapers, journal articles, books and internet were used. Interviews with contending candidates, political members from both BN and Parti Warisan, as well as the general community in Silam was carried out. The findings observed was the failure of BN to heed lessons from past elections whereby voters in Sabah would rationally vote to change governments if they were not satisfied with the government of the day, as was the case in 1976 (USNO), 1985 (Berjaya) and 1994 (PBS). It was this lack of attention to history which saw BN’s lost over its stronghold in Silam during GE-14
The Effect of Social-economic background on electric and electronic waste (e-waste) management amongst Residential areas in Kota Kinabalu City, Sabah, Malaysia
Electrical and electronic waste (e-waste) is a very complex waste because it contains harmful and harmless chemicals. The toxic chemical properties and heavy metals are very harmful to humans and the environment. Therefore, e-waste needs to be managed efficiently and systematically. Currently, e-waste management in most countries relies heavily on law and does not take into account the culture and socio-economy of the local community. Therefore, this article will identify e-waste management practices among households and analyse the relationship between selected background and household e-waste management in Kota Kinabalu City. The survey method is used as a method of data collection using the questionnaire as the main instrument. The data is analyzed using descriptive statistics (frequency analysis and cross tabulation) and inference statistics (chi square and logistic regression). The total number of respondents obtained was 395 people. The results of the study found that the practice of storing, disposing of bins and selling used items is a popular management method among the households rather than sending e- waste to recycling centres. The study also found that socioeconomic backgrounds such as gender, age and monthly household income have a significant influence on the way e-waste management is conducted. Therefore, this study proves there is a need to emphasize the socio- economic background in managing e-waste, especially in residential areas
Current State of the Inter-Organizational Information Exchange Strategies of German SME - A Survey
The reliability of well-performing production processes not only depends on internal but also on external factors in the upstream supply chain. Therefore, companies require fast and reliable information exchange with cooperating organizations. We aim to support the industry in improving their communication methods and, therefore, have conducted a survey to capture the current state and needs in this area - addressing inter- instead of the usually surveyed intra-organizational degree of digitalization. In this paper, we outline the main outcomes of our survey. We received 135 evaluable questionnaires from manufacturing companies based in Germany, predominantly from small and medium-sized companies. Based on the responses, we detected that the use of modern methods correlates with the company size. Furthermore, we showed that only a few companies are completely satisfied with their current methods for inter-organizational information exchange. The greatest potential for improvement is seen in standardization and the increase of required resources
