Double proton tagging at the LHC as a means to discover new physics

proposals to add forward proton tagging detectors to the LHC experiments as a

We study the diffractive production of high pt photons at HERA. We have
implemented the process as a new hard sub-process in the HERWIG event generator

Central Exclusive Di-jet Production at the Tevatron
We perform a phenomenological analysis of dijet production in double pomeron
exchange at the Tevatron. We find that the CDF Run I results do not rule out
the presence of an exclusive dijet component, as predicted by Khoze, Martin and
Ryskin (KMR). With the high statistics CDF Run II data, we predict that an
exclusive component at the level predicted by KMR may be visible, although the
observation will depend on accurate modelling of the inclusive double pomeron
exchange process. We also compare to the predictions of the DPEMC Monte Carlo,
which contains a non-perturbative model for the central exclusive process. We
show that the perturbative model of KMR gives different predictions for the
di-jet ET dependence in the high di-jet mass fraction region than

Observing a Light CP-Violating Higgs Boson in Diffraction
Light CP-violating Higgs bosons with mass lower than 70 GeV might have
escaped detection in direct searches at the LEP collider. They may remain
undetected in conventional search channels at the Tevatron and LHC. In this
Letter we show that exclusive diffractive reactions may be able to probe for
the existence of these otherwise elusive Higgs particles. As a prototype
example, we calculate diffractive production cross-sections of the lightest
Higgs boson within the framework of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model
with explicit CP violation. Our analysis shows that the challenging regions of
parameter space corresponding to a light CP-violating Higgs boson might be
accessible at the LHC provided suitable proton tagging detectors are installed.Comment: 9 pages, LaTeX, 2 figures, version as to appear in Phys. Rev.
Universal Phase Diagram for High-Piezoelectric Perovskite Systems
Strong piezoelectricity in the perovskite-type PbZr(1-x)TixO3 (PZT) and
Pb(Zn1/3Nb2/3)O3-PbTiO3 (PZN-PT) systems is generally associated with the
existence of a morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) separating regions with
rhombohedral and tetragonal symmetry. An x-ray study of PZN-9%PT has revealed
the presence of a new orthorhombic phase at the MPB, and a near-vertical
boundary between the rhombohedral and orthorhombic phases, similar to that
found for PZT between the rhombohedral and monoclinic phases. We discuss the
results in the light of a recent theoretical paper by Vanderbilt and Cohen,
which attributes these low-symmetry phases to the high anharmonicity in these

Perturbations in the Kerr-Newman Dilatonic Black Hole Background: I. Maxwell waves
In this paper we analyze the perturbations of the Kerr-Newman dilatonic black
hole background. For this purpose we perform a double expansion in both the
background electric charge and the wave parameters of the relevant quantities
in the Newman-Penrose formalism. We then display the gravitational, dilatonic
and electromagnetic equations, which reproduce the static solution (at zero
order in the wave parameter) and the corresponding wave equations in the Kerr
background (at first order in the wave parameter and zero order in the electric
charge). At higher orders in the electric charge one encounters corrections to
the propagations of waves induced by the presence of a non-vanishing dilaton.
An explicit computation is carried out for the electromagnetic waves up to the
asymptotic form of the Maxwell field perturbations produced by the interaction
with dilatonic waves. A simple physical model is proposed which could make
these perturbations relevant to the detection of radiation coming from the
