Background: Ankle sprain may cause alterations in the ankle joint complex, however there is no conclusive information of the impact of these sprains when it comes to changes in postural stability. Objective: To evaluate if postural stability is altered in futsal players with history of ankle sprain injury compared with futsal players without ankle sprain injury history. Methods: Seven senior, amateurs, futsal teams were randomly recruited among the clubs participating in the championship of the districts of Aveiro or Coimbra in season 2013/14. Of the 83 players who agreed to participate in the study, 12 met criteria for inclusion in the group with sprain (GCE). Of the remainder, 12 were randomly selected for the group with no history of sprain (GSE). Postural stability was evaluated with the participants on one foot, during 30s, with open eyes, using a force platform. Results: No differences were found between the groups regarding mean age (GSE, 25,8 ± 3,1 vs. GCE, 27,1 ± 4,3 years, p>0,05), weight and height. Statistically significant differences were found in CoPx, the GCE showed higher displacement than GSE (4,72 ± 1,41 vs. 3,54 ± 0,23 cm, p<0,05). No statistically significant differences were found in the CoPy, total CoP, CoP speed and CoP Area. Conclusion: In this study, futsal players with ankle sprain history presented less postural stability, shown by a greater anteroposterior displacement of the center of pressure

The amendment of phosphorus shortage is indispensable to elevate the capacity of animal support capacity of a pasture. To improve P status of these soils and to know the qualitative and quantitative effect of phosphorus fertilizer on the forage Tanzânia-1, an experiment was conducted in one dark red latosol , at Santo Antônio de Goiás - GO. The soil was prepared by using a harrow and one ploughing, and sowing was done after a week. The plots were fertilized by using 0; 50 and 100 kg of P ha-1 of commercial thermo-phosphate in previously amended soil with 3 t ha-1 of dolomite lime. The mean values of plant height, budding, green mass and dry matter increased but decreased the gross protein and increased the fiber contents. The phosphorus fertilizer didn’t influence potassium, calcium, zinc and manganese contents in the leaf tissue of plants. However, it reduced phosphorus, copper and iron contents but increased the magnesium contents. KEY-WORDS: Savanah; mineral nutricion; Panicum maximum; pasture.

A note on comonotonicity and positivity of the control components of decoupled quadratic FBSDE

In this small note we are concerned with the solution of Forward-Backward Stochastic Differential Equations (FBSDE) with drivers that grow quadratically in the control component (quadratic growth FBSDE or qgFBSDE). The main theorem is a comparison result that allows comparing componentwise the signs of the control processes of two different qgFBSDE. As a byproduct one obtains conditions that allow establishing the positivity of the control process.Comment: accepted for publicatio

Background: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic had quite an impact on dental health care. Concerns about the risk of SARS-CoV-2 transmission through contaminant fluids and droplet formation during several dental procedures highly impacted dental health care, drastically reducing the number of dental practices worldwide. To monitor SARS-CoV-2 contamination in dental clinics, a longitudinal study was carried out during the return of dental practice at university. Methods: Dental health care professionals [(DHCPs); teachers, undergraduate dental students, and dental assistants] and patients were screened for SARS-CoV-2 RNA in a dental school clinic environment from 11th January to 12th March 2021 (9 weeks). Serological testing was performed on DHCPs in two-time points. Additionally, samples with low Ct values were sequenced to identify the circulating SARS-CoV-2 variant and possible transmission clusters. Results: We found a low number of dental staff (5.8%), patients (0.9%), and environment sites (0.8%) positive for SARS-CoV-2. Most positive cases had asymptomatic to mild symptoms, and two asymptomatic DHCPs presented prolonged infection. In the first week after previous exposure to COVID-19, 16.2% of DHCPs had IgM or IgG antibodies against SARS-CoV-2, and 1/3 of them had undetected antibodies in the last weeks. The variant zeta (P.2) could be detected. No cross-infection was observed between participants. Conclusion: Our study suggests that dental practice can be safely executed when adequate control measures and biosafety protocols are applied. DHCP and patient testing, patient telemonitoring, proper use of personal protection equipment, and sanitization of surfaces are essential to avoid SARS-CoV-2 cross-infection in dental practice.CNPq - Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e TecnológicoFAPEMIG - Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de Minas GeraisCAPES - Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superio

Photography-based taxonomy is inadequate, unnecessary, and potentially harmful for biological sciences

    Get PDF
The question whether taxonomic descriptions naming new animal species without type specimen(s) deposited in collections should be accepted for publication by scientific journals and allowed by the Code has already been discussed in Zootaxa (Dubois & Nemésio 2007; Donegan 2008, 2009; Nemésio 2009a–b; Dubois 2009; Gentile & Snell 2009; Minelli 2009; Cianferoni & Bartolozzi 2016; Amorim et al. 2016). This question was again raised in a letter supported by 35 signatories published in the journal Nature (Pape et al. 2016) on 15 September 2016. On 25 September 2016, the following rebuttal (strictly limited to 300 words as per the editorial rules of Nature) was submitted to Nature, which on 18 October 2016 refused to publish it. As we think this problem is a very important one for zoological taxonomy, this text is published here exactly as submitted to Nature, followed by the list of the 493 taxonomists and collection-based researchers who signed it in the short time span from 20 September to 6 October 2016

    Get PDF
The COVID-19 pandemic has created an unprecedented need for epidemiological monitoring using diverse strategies. We conducted a project combining prevalence, seroprevalence, and genomic surveillance approaches to describe the initial pandemic stages in Betim City, Brazil. We collected 3239 subjects in a population-based age-, sex- and neighborhood-stratified, household, prospective; cross-sectional study divided into three surveys 21 days apart sampling the same geographical area. In the first survey, overall prevalence (participants positive in serological or molecular tests) reached 0.46% (90% CI 0.12–0.80%), followed by 2.69% (90% CI 1.88–3.49%) in the second survey and 6.67% (90% CI 5.42–7.92%) in the third. The underreporting reached 11, 19.6, and 20.4 times in each survey. We observed increased odds to test positive in females compared to males (OR 1.88 95% CI 1.25–2.82), while the single best predictor for positivity was ageusia/anosmia (OR 8.12, 95% CI 4.72–13.98). Thirty-five SARS-CoV-2 genomes were sequenced, of which 18 were classified as lineage B.1.1.28, while 17 were B.1.1.33. Multiple independent viral introductions were observed. Integration of multiple epidemiological strategies was able to adequately describe COVID-19 dispersion in the city.

    Get PDF

This article reviews recent advancements in the treatment of advanced and metastatic melanoma, focusing on immunotherapies, targeted therapies, and surgical approaches. Tebentafusp has demonstrated significant overall survival benefits in patients with metastatic uveal melanoma, especially among HLA-A*02:01-positive individuals, suggesting its potential as a first-line therapeutic option. Pembrolizumab, used as an adjuvant in early stages of resected melanoma, has proven effective in reducing the risk of distant metastasis and recurrence. The combination of ipilimumab and nivolumab has also shown high efficacy in treating brain metastases from melanoma, surpassing survival rates of conventional therapies. For rare melanomas, such as vaginal melanoma, surgery remains central, while immunotherapy is limited due to cost. Studies with encorafenib and binimetinib indicate durable benefits for patients with the BRAF mutation, and the use of microbiome biomarkers emerges as a promising area to optimize immunotherapy responses. This body of studies expands therapeutic options and proposes personalized strategies despite economic and access challenges.

Pervasive gaps in Amazonian ecological research

Biodiversity loss is one of the main challenges of our time,1,2 and attempts to address it require a clear un derstanding of how ecological communities respond to environmental change across time and space.3,4 While the increasing availability of global databases on ecological communities has advanced our knowledge of biodiversity sensitivity to environmental changes,5–7 vast areas of the tropics remain understudied.8–11 In the American tropics, Amazonia stands out as the world’s most diverse rainforest and the primary source of Neotropical biodiversity,12 but it remains among the least known forests in America and is often underrepre sented in biodiversity databases.13–15 To worsen this situation, human-induced modifications16,17 may elim inate pieces of the Amazon’s biodiversity puzzle before we can use them to understand how ecological com munities are responding. To increase generalization and applicability of biodiversity knowledge,18,19 it is thus crucial to reduce biases in ecological research, particularly in regions projected to face the most pronounced environmental changes. We integrate ecological community metadata of 7,694 sampling sites for multiple or ganism groups in a machine learning model framework to map the research probability across the Brazilian Amazonia, while identifying the region’s vulnerability to environmental change. 15%–18% of the most ne glected areas in ecological research are expected to experience severe climate or land use changes by 2050. This means that unless we take immediate action, we will not be able to establish their current status, much less monitor how it is changing and what is being lostinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
