    A Narrative History of Resource Sharing in the State of Maryland

Permission granted through posted policies on copyright owner’s website or through direct contact with copyright owner.The evolution of statewide resource sharing and reciprocal borrowing for Maryland public libraries is discussed. Beginning in the 1950s, the Enoch Pratt Free Library assumed responsibility for filling interlibrary loan requests or the state due to the size of its collection. In 1971, Pratt became the State Library Resource Center and its interlibrary loan responsibilities became formalized. Through a series of technological advancements in library catalogs and interlibrary loan systems, Maryland has arrived at the MARINA system to facilitate sharing resources throughout the state. The state has a long-standing philosophy of cooperation, which makes the MARINA endeavor possible

    This article explores the possibility that public libraries can be repositories for digital community archives. The overarching goal is to establish a case for public libraries’ developing digital community archives that are participatory and which emphasize born-digital items rather than digitized physical items. This discussion follows my own research and experience in this area to include personal information management, social media and the personal archive, and the accidental community archive, and demonstrates that public libraries can focus on communities’ current events and people rather than solely on those from the past

    Community archives have proven vital for giving a voice to underrepresented groups. Formal institutional archives have traditionally represented the dominant narrative in society and continue to do so, excluding access to cultural records and artifacts of underrepresented groups. Well-funded cultural heritage institutions have the infrastructures of support to provide long-term preservation and access on a global scale. Connecting community archives to this infrastructure of support is the overarching goal of my research (Copeland, 2015). How to make that connection in a way that respects the community and the purpose of the archive remains to be determined.     Through the theoretical lens of Costa and McCrae's 5-factor model of personality, Heinström provides an exploration of the research on the influence of personality on information seeking and use. She successfully brings together research from a variety of domains with an emphasis on psychology and social psychology. The book places equal emphasis on describing personality traits and, as it does, the information behaviors relevant to each trait. The works cited from information behavior research are not treated comprehensively, but rather selectively to illustrate the influence of particular personality trait associated with specific information behaviors.     The Role of Mentorship Programs in LIS Education and in Professional Development

    Although mentoring is widely valued and encouraged within librarianship, it has been conceived mostly as a professional relationship that occurs after one has obtained a position. Thus, mentoring among LIS students is not customary – largely because internships and field experiences are not universally required. To address this problem, the investigators wanted to distinguish the kind of education a mentorship program provides. This study identifies the kinds of knowledge academic librarians and LIS students gained after participation in a semester-long mentorship program. Data was collected through two focus group interviews, which were transcribed, analyzed, and compared for inter-coder agreement. The mentees gained knowledge related to the work life of academic librarians, job seeking, and workplace expectations. The mentors valued the experience because it promoted currency in the field, self-awareness, and reflection on practice. This research supports the need to emphasize internships and mentoring within the LIS curriculum

    Transportation in Indianapolis is evolving. The bicycle, two-wheeled agitator of a similar transportation revolution across the United States in the 1890s, is back. The city landscape, overwhelmingly distinguished by auto-centric design, is increasingly being reshaped to support cycling as the economic impact of these alterations changes perceptions and the cycling movement gains momentum. How to document the impact of an urban landscape in flux from the perspective of a loosely codified community centered on cycling is a considerable challenge worthy of consideration by archivists and information professionals in general
