    Agent Programming in Ciao Prolog

    Get PDF
The agent programming landscape has been revealed as a natural framework for developing “intelligence” in AI. This can be seen from the extensive use of the agent concept in presenting (and developing) AI systems, the proliferation of agent theories, and the evolution of concepts such as agent societies (social intelligence) and coordination

    The AXIOM software layers

AXIOM project aims at developing a heterogeneous computing board (SMP-FPGA).The Software Layers developed at the AXIOM project are explained.OmpSs provides an easy way to execute heterogeneous codes in multiple cores. People and objects will soon share the same digital network for information exchange in a world named as the age of the cyber-physical systems. The general expectation is that people and systems will interact in real-time. This poses pressure onto systems design to support increasing demands on computational power, while keeping a low power envelop. Additionally, modular scaling and easy programmability are also important to ensure these systems to become widespread. The whole set of expectations impose scientific and technological challenges that need to be properly addressed. The AXIOM project (Agile, eXtensible, fast I/O Module) will research new hardware/software architectures for cyber-physical systems to meet such expectations. The technical approach aims at solving fundamental problems to enable easy programmability of heterogeneous multi-core multi-board systems. AXIOM proposes the use of the task-based OmpSs programming model, leveraging low-level communication interfaces provided by the hardware. Modular scalability will be possible thanks to a fast interconnect embedded into each module. To this aim, an innovative ARM and FPGA-based board will be designed, with enhanced capabilities for interfacing with the physical world. Its effectiveness will be demonstrated with key scenarios such as Smart Video-Surveillance and Smart Living/Home (domotics).Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft

An Immanent Critique of the Attention Economy

    Get PDF
The present article develops an immanent critique of the attention economy as a power apparatus. In particular, it contends that what Foucault (2009) defined as the passage from disciplinary societies to societies of security entails a transformation of the main function of human attention: whereas in disciplinary societies attention (or the gaze) was aimed at imposing continuous surveillance on each individual, societies of security conceive the gaze of each subject as a source of data which allows constructing a new object of power, i.e., the population. To illustrate this, the present article focuses on the specific case of the attention economy and the notions of ‘dataveillance’ and ‘Big Data’

    Rehabilitation in juvenile idiopathic arthritis

INTRODUCTION AND AIMS: juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) may cause permanent physical disabilities in children and adolescents. This study aimed to describe the several kinds of rehabilitation procedures, ranging from evaluation to prescription of exercises, as well as the elaboration of a practical rehabilitation guide for JIA patients. SOURCES OF DATA: the research was based on data from Medline and Lilacs. The opinion of experts working on the Pediatric Rheumatology service from Lar Escola São Francisco and Universidade Federal de São Paulo (UNIFESP) was considered on the debate of several topics. SUMMARY: JIA patients may present pain and limitation of joint movement thereby leading to decrease in physical capacity, affecting both aerobic and anaerobic activities. In addition to the joint compromise, cardiac and autonomic dysfunctions collaborate on this process, impairing sport and everyday activities. The American College of Rheumatology recommends 30-minute activity with moderate intensity, two to three times weekly. Hydrotherapy is associated to treatment adherence, besides helping in decreasing pain perception and adding to cope with daily activities. Other rehabilitation modalities, such as massage, education, joint protection, energy conservation, and splints are also considered in the present review. CONCLUSION: there are few studies in the literature focusing on rehabilitation in children with JIA. Particularly, there is a lack of studies concerning aspects of adequate prescription of exercises, weight-bearing, number of series and repetitions, as well as the best choice regarding ground or water activity. We believe that additional information is needed in order to improve the physical care to these patients.INTRODUÇÃO E OBJETIVOS: a artrite idiopática juvenil (AIJ) pode acarretar em seu curso clínico incapacidades físicas permanentes em crianças e adolescentes.

Exploring the Experience of Start-ups in Open Innovation Programs in Portugal: An Analysis of Perceptions and Positive Impacts

    Get PDF
Open innovation has become a popular approach for innovation all over the world, including in Portugal. This study explores the experience of start-ups in Open Innovation programs from Portugal, analysing their perception and positive impacts of adopting this approach. A qualitative research method was used to achieve this goal based on in-depth interviews with four start-up entrepreneurs who have engaged in open innovation practices and 1 of the companies responsible for these open innovation programs. The interviews were analysed using thematic analysis, which revealed several prominent themes. The positive perceptions identified are (i) the significance of validation and reputation for start-ups when collaborating with larger companies; (ii) the advantages of gaining a better understanding of corporate procedures, particularly for those who lacked prior experience working with larger companies; (iii) the impact of open innovation programs on business scaling and revenue generation; (iv) the monetary prize offered by such programs was seen as crucial for establishing long-term strategies; (v) accessing the perspectives of industry experts was also identified as a valuable advantage, which validate the previous studies on the topic. The findings of this study provide insights into the open innovation experience of start-ups and underscore the significant role that large companies play as validators and facilitators of further opportunities. The start-up feedback highlights the value of working with established companies to validate their solutions and access new projects. Further research could build upon these findings to examine the open innovation experience of start-ups in other countries and to identify best practices that can be applied to support start-ups in their open innovation journey. The findings of this study could have implications for policymakers and practitioners interested in promoting innovation ecosystems, particularly those focused on start-up development and entrepreneurship. In conclusion, this study sheds light on the experience of start-ups participating in Portuguese open innovation programs and highlights some of the positive and negative impacts they gain from adopting this approach. Future research could also explore how established companies can learn from the open innovation practices from the start-ups' point of view and how they can create a culture that supports innovation, fosters collaboration with external partners, and encourages adopting open innovation practices

Measurement of the cosmic ray spectrum above 4×10184{\times}10^{18} eV using inclined events detected with the Pierre Auger Observatory

A measurement of the cosmic-ray spectrum for energies exceeding 4×10184{\times}10^{18} eV is presented, which is based on the analysis of showers with zenith angles greater than 6060^{\circ} detected with the Pierre Auger Observatory between 1 January 2004 and 31 December 2013. The measured spectrum confirms a flux suppression at the highest energies. Above 5.3×10185.3{\times}10^{18} eV, the "ankle", the flux can be described by a power law EγE^{-\gamma} with index γ=2.70±0.02(stat)±0.1(sys)\gamma=2.70 \pm 0.02 \,\text{(stat)} \pm 0.1\,\text{(sys)} followed by a smooth suppression region. For the energy (EsE_\text{s}) at which the spectral flux has fallen to one-half of its extrapolated value in the absence of suppression, we find Es=(5.12±0.25(stat)1.2+1.0(sys))×1019E_\text{s}=(5.12\pm0.25\,\text{(stat)}^{+1.0}_{-1.2}\,\text{(sys)}){\times}10^{19} eV.Comment: Replaced with published version. This article explores the temporal dimension of the attention economy through Bernard Stiegler’s notion of cinematic time. The attention economy is a concept forged within the field of political economy to explain the growing value of attention in an information-rich world. This implies a growing discrepancy between the finite nature of human time required to pay attention to and process the available information, and the inhuman speed at which that information flows and accumulates. The problem with this definition of the temporality of the attention economy is that it naturalizes a given notion of human time that is then used to evaluate the negative effects of information technologies. In this sense, human time is proposed as a concept devoid of any kind of historical transformation. Contrary to this definition of the temporality of the attention economy, this article uses Bernard Stiegler's concept of cinematic time to examine how human time and cyber-time mutually constitute each other.
