Effect of culture on acceptance of telemedicine in Middle Eastern countries: Case study of Jordan and Syria
© Mary Ann Liebert, INC.We investigated issues that affect the use and adoption of telemedicine in Middle Eastern countries, taking the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan and the Syrian Arab Republic as case studies. Our study is based on interviews with key stakeholders (including doctors, technicians, engineers, and decision makers) and questionnaires administered to key stakeholders (including patients), ensuring opinion was gained from people from a full range of backgrounds and roles in the healthcare system. We found doctor and patient resistance was a major issue preventing the adoption of telemedicine in both countries, followed by poor infrastructure, lack of funding, and lack of information technology training. Our research identifies that culture is a greater issue than technical matters for the adoption of telemedicine in Middle Eastern countries. Based on our preliminary results we developed a guideline framework for each country that might be applied to telemedicine projects at the pre-implementation phase. The proposed guideline framework was validated through a return visit to the stakeholders and seeking further opinion
Identification of cognitive factors related to remote work performance using closed circuit TV displays
Operator perceptual cognitive styles as predictors of remote task performance were identified. Remote tasks which require the use of servo controlled master/slave manipulators and closed circuit television for teleoperator repair and maintenance of nuclear fuel recycling systems are examined. A useful procedure for identifying such perceptual styles is described
An IT approach to cardiovascular care based on primary care
We describe a unique telemedicine approach to cardiovascular care, based in primary care, which combines store and forward with real time video. Patients presenting to the family practitioner (GP) with chest pain or symptoms indicative of cardiac disease are assessed within the health centre by exercise test ECG. The report, together with other clinical information is forwarded as an electronic referral to the cardiologist. Suitable candidates for angiography have an initial teleconsultation by video-conferencing, in which not only may the patient, GP and cardiologist discuss the diagnosis and forthcoming procedures in hospital, but also can undertake management of the patient, such as review of medication and life style. Follow-up consultations may be conducted by further tele-clinics. We also show how re-engineering the process has the potential to eliminate 75 of outpatient appointment
Nurses' and community support workers' experience of telehealth: A longitudinal case study

This paper explores how this disruption is experienced. Methods - In a longitudinal qualitative study, we conducted focus group discussions prior to and semi structured interviews post introduction of a telehealth service in Nottingham, U.K. with the community matrons, congestive heart failure nurses, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease nurses and community support workers that would be involved in order to elicit their preconceptions and reactions to the implementation. Results - Users experienced disruption due to the implementation of telehealth as threatening. Three main factors add to the experience of threat and affect the decision to use the technology: change in clinical routines and increased workload; change in interactions with patients and fundamentals of face-to-face nursing work; and change in skills required with marginalisation of clinical expertise. Conclusion - Since the introduction of telehealth can be experienced as threatening, managers and service providers should aim at minimising the disruption caused by taking the above factors on board. This can be achieved by employing simple yet effective measures such as: providing timely, appropriate and context specific training; provision of adequate technical support; and procedures that allow a balance between the use of telehealth and personal visit by nurses delivering care to their patients

The Superbubble Size Distribution in the Interstellar Medium of Galaxies
We use the standard, adiabatic shell evolution to predict the size
distribution N(R) for populations of OB superbubbles in a uniform ISM. We
derive N(R) for simple cases of superbubble creation rate and mechanical
luminosity function (MLF). For R < the characteristic radius R_e, N(R) is
dominated by stalled objects, while for R>R_e it is dominated by growing
objects. We also briefly investigate N(R) resulting from momentum-conserving
shell evolution. We predict a peak in N(R) corresponding to individual SNRs. To
estimate the MLF, we also examine evolutionary effects on the HII region
luminosity function (HII LF), finding that for nebular luminosity fading as a
power law in time, there is a minimum observed slope for the HII LFs.
Comparison with the largely complete HI hole catalog for the SMC shows
surprising agreement in the predicted and observed slope of N(R), suggesting
that no other fundamental process is needed to explain the size distribution of
shells in the SMC. Further comparison with largely incomplete HI data for M31,
M33, and Holmberg II is also encouraging. We present expressions for the ISM
porosity parameters, and estimate that they are substantially <1 for all of the
galaxies except Holmberg II. Most of these galaxies therefore may not be
strongly dominated by a hot interstellar component. However, porosity results

Russell Square: a lifelong resource for teaching and learning
A quarter of a century ago, in 1978, Birkbeck College’s Faculty of Continuing Education (FCE, then the Department for Extra-Mural Studies of the federal University) moved to the offices that it now occupies in numbers 26 and 25 Russell Square. Then, as now, FCE was the one of the largest and most active extra-mural departments of any British university, with an enormous range of courses covering virtually every subject taught in ‘internal’ university departments and many more besides 1. Some of these courses have, from time to time, used Russell Square as a learning resource. Many more staff and students alike have (along with thousands of local workers, tourists and residents) used the square’s gardens for relaxation and recovery, without reflecting on its origins or present significance.
This Occasional Paper examines the past and present fabric of Russell Square (‘the Square’) as a resource for teaching and learning. It is a composite narrative assembled by FCE staff whose disciplines range from nature conservation through garden history and architectural history to social policy. It deconstructs the Square as an entity and attempts to decipher some of its ‘meanings’ that provide links between subjects taught within FCE.
We hope that it will stimulate discussion about the way this single ‘place’ – our Square - can be ‘seen’ or interpreted in different ways for diverse purposes, and about the way that it can be used as a resource for teaching and learning across disciplines
