    ECONOMIC IMPACTS OF EPA'S MANURE APPLICATION REGULATIONS ON DAIRY FARMS IN THE SOUTHWEST REGION

    We estimate that EPA's CAFO final rule on manure application would have different impacts on dairy farms in the region, assuming that the farms would maintain the same herd size and same crop production practices. Some farms in the region would be able to comply it on their current land base, but other would need to lease additional land for land application of manure. Less than 30 percent of those affected farms would have a lower farm income. Most of these affected farms could have no income reduction or a higher income as a result of reduced feed cost from expanding homegrown feed production.Environmental Economics and Policy,

    The GoodNight study—online CBT for insomnia for the indicated prevention of depression: study protocol for a randomised controlled trial

    BACKGROUND Cognitive Behaviour Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) delivered through the Internet is effective as a treatment in reducing insomnia in individuals seeking help for insomnia. CBT-I also lowers levels of depression in this group. However, it is not known if targeting insomnia using CBT-I will lower depressive symptoms, and thus reduce the risk of major depressive episode onset, in those specifically at risk for depression. Therefore, this study aims to examine whether Internet delivery of fully automated self-help CBT-I designed to reduce insomnia will prevent depression. METHOD/DESIGN A sample of 1,600 community-dwelling adults (aged 18-64), who screen positive for both subclinical levels of depressive symptoms and insomnia, will be recruited via various media and randomised to either a 9-week online insomnia treatment programme, Sleep Healthy Using The internet (SHUTi), or an online attention-matched control group (HealthWatch). The primary outcome variable will be depression symptom levels at the 6-month post-intervention on the Patient Heath Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9). A secondary outcome will be onset of major depressive episodes assessed at the 6-month post-intervention using 'current' and 'time from intervention' criteria from the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview. DISCUSSION This trial is the first randomised controlled trial of an Internet-based insomnia intervention as an indicated preventative programme for depression. If effective, online provision of a depression prevention programme will facilitate dissemination.     Matter-wave Interferometry with Phase Fluctuating Bose-Einstein Condensates

    Elongated Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) exhibit strong spatial phase fluctuations even well below the BEC transition temperature. We demonstrate that atom interferometers using such condensates are robust against phase fluctuations, i.e. the relative phase of the split condensate is reproducible despite axial phase fluctuations. However, larger phase fluctuations limit the coherence time, especially in the presence of some asymmetries in the two wells of the interferometer.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures, figures correcte

    Significance of Off-Center Rattling for Emerging Low-lying THz Modes in type-I Clathrates

    We show that the distinct differences of low-lying THz-frequency dynamics between type-I clathrates with on-center and off-center guest ions naturally follow from a theoretical model taking into account essential features of the dynamics of rattling guest ions. Our model analysis demonstrates the drastic change from the conventional dynamics shown by on-center systems to the peculiar dynamics of off-center systems in a unified manner. We claim that glass-like plateau thermal conductivities observed for off-center systems stem from the flattening of acoustic phonon dispersion in the regime |k|<|G|/4. The mechanism is applicable to other systems such as glasses or relaxers

    Phase Sensitive Recombination of Two Bose-Einstein Condensates on an Atom Chip

    The recombination of two split Bose-Einstein condensates on an atom chip is shown to result in heating which depends on the relative phase of the two condensates. This heating reduces the number of condensate atoms between 10 and 40% and provides a robust way to read out the phase of an atom interferometer without the need for ballistic expansion. The heating may be caused by the dissipation of dark solitons created during the merging of the condensates.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure

    SLHAplus: a library for implementing extensions of the standard model

    We provide a library to facilitate the implementation of new models in codes such as matrix element and event generators or codes for computing dark matter observables. The library contains a SLHA reader routine as well as diagonalisation routines. This library is available in CalcHEP and micrOMEGAs.     Evidence for a sharp structure variation inside a red-giant star

    The availability of precisely determined frequencies of radial and non-radial oscillation modes in red giants is finally paving the way for detailed studies of the internal structure of these stars. We look for the seismic signature of regions of sharp structure variation in the internal structure of the CoRoT target HR7349. We analyse the frequency dependence of the large frequency separation and second frequency differences, as well as the behaviour of the large frequency separation obtained with the envelope auto-correlation function. We find evidence for a periodic component in the oscillation frequencies, i.e. the seismic signature of a sharp structure variation in HR7349. In a comparison with stellar models we interpret this feature as caused by a local depression of the sound speed that occurs in the helium second-ionization region. Using solely seismic constraints this allows us to estimate the mass (M=1.2^{+0.6}_{-0.4} Msun) and radius (R=12.2^{+2.1}_{-1.8} Rsun) of HR7349, which agrees with the location of the star in an HR diagram.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures, accepted in A&A Letter

    Universality in isotropic, abelian and non-abelian, sandpile models is examined using extensive numerical simulations. To characterize the critical behavior we employ an extended set of critical exponents, geometric features of the avalanches, as well as scaling functions describing the time evolution of average quantities such as the area and size during the avalanche. Comparing between the abelian Bak-Tang-Wiesenfeld model [P. Bak, C. Tang and K. Wiensenfeld, Phys. Rev. Lett. 59, 381 (1987)], and the non-abelian models introduced by Manna [S. S. Manna, J. Phys. A. 24, L363 (1991)] and Zhang [Y. C. Zhang, Phys. Rev. Lett. 63, 470 (1989)] we find strong indications that each one of these models belongs to a distinct universality class.Comment: 18 pages of text, RevTeX, additional 8 figures in 12 PS file

    Properties of 125 GeV Higgs boson in non-decoupling MSSM scenarios

    Tantalizing hints of the Higgs boson of mass around 125 GeV have been reported at the LHC. We explore the MSSM parameter space in which the 125 GeV state is identified as the heavier of the CP even Higgs bosons, and study two scenarios where the two photon production rate can be significantly larger than the standard model (SM). In one scenario, Γ(Hγγ)\Gamma(H\to \gamma\gamma) is enhanced by a light stau contribution, while the WWWW^{\ast} (ZZZZ^{\ast}) rate stays around the SM rate. In the other scenario, Γ(Hbbˉ)\Gamma(H\to b\bar{b}) is suppressed and not only the γγ\gamma\gamma but also the WWWW^{\ast} (ZZZZ^{\ast}) rates should be enhanced. The ττˉ\tau\bar{\tau} rate can be significantly larger or smaller than the SM rate in both scenarios. Other common features of the scenarios include top quark decays into charged Higgs boson, single and pair production of all Higgs bosons in e+ee^+e^- collisions at s300\sqrt{s}\lesssim 300 GeV.Comment: 20 pages, 5 figures, accepted version for publication in JHE
