Unifying and Merging Well-trained Deep Neural Networks for Inference Stage
We propose a novel method to merge convolutional neural-nets for the
inference stage. Given two well-trained networks that may have different
architectures that handle different tasks, our method aligns the layers of the
original networks and merges them into a unified model by sharing the
representative codes of weights. The shared weights are further re-trained to
fine-tune the performance of the merged model. The proposed method effectively
produces a compact model that may run original tasks simultaneously on
resource-limited devices. As it preserves the general architectures and
leverages the co-used weights of well-trained networks, a substantial training
overhead can be reduced to shorten the system development time. Experimental
results demonstrate a satisfactory performance and validate the effectiveness
of the method.Comment: To appear in the 27th International Joint Conference on Artificial

A Systems Approach to Institutional Diffusion in Taiwan’s Food Traceability System
A food traceability system is an institution that aims to reduce information asymmetry among producers, retailers, and consumers through public disclosure of information about the origin, production, and sales of agriproducts. System effectiveness depends on the changes that result from diffusion. In this study, we use Taiwan’s traceable agricultural products system to integrate mental models of multiple stakeholders to simulate interactions among institutional quality, adopter profitability, profit distribution, and institutional diffusion from a system dynamics perspective. It thus provides a framework for institutional diffusion and change and elucidates the process of institutional diffusion for the causal relations among many critical factors
Unraveling implicit human behavioral effects on dynamic characteristics of Covid-19 daily infection rates in Taiwan
We study Covid-19 spreading dynamics underlying 84 curves of daily Covid-19
infection rates pertaining to 84 districts belonging to the largest seven
cities in Taiwan during her pristine surge period. Our computational
developments begin with selecting and extracting 18 features from each smoothed
district-specific curve. This step of computing effort allows unstructured data
to be converted into structured data, with which we then demonstrate asymmetric
growth and decline dynamics among all involved curves. Specifically, based on
Theoretical Information measurements of conditional entropy and mutual
information, we compute major factors of order-1 and order-2 that reveal
significant effects on affecting the curves' peak value and curvature at peak,
which are two essential features characterizing all the curves. Further, we
investigate and demonstrate major factors determining the geographic and
social-economic induced behavioral effects by encoding each of these 84
districts with two binary characteristics: North-vs-South and
Unban-vs-suburban. Furthermore, based on this data-driven knowledge on the
district scale, we go on to study fine-scale behavioral effects on infectious
disease spreading through similarity among 96 age-group-specific curves of
daily infection rate within 12 urban districts of Taipei and 12 suburban
districts of New Taipei City, which counts for almost one-quarter of the island
nation's total population. We conclude that human living, traveling, and
working behaviors do implicitly affect the spreading dynamics of Covid-19
across Taiwan profoundly
Neonatal-Onset Chronic Intestinal Pseudo-Obstruction Syndrome with In Utero Urological Manifestation as Megacystis
SummaryObjectiveWe describe a case of neonatal-onset chronic intestinal pseudo-obstruction syndrome (CIPS) with in utero urological manifestation as congenital megacystis. Pitfalls in the interpretation of prenatal sonographic appearance, genetic counseling, and differential diagnosis are discussed.Case ReportA 28-year-old Taiwanese woman, gravida 6, para 3, was referred for further sonographic examination because of a suspected fetal abdominal cyst. Targeted ultrasound at 28 weeks' gestation showed megacystis filling the abdominal cavity. The renal parenchyma appeared normal, and there was no evidence of reflux hydroureteronephrosis. At 38 weeks of gestation, the patient spontaneously delivered a female infant weighing 3,350 g with Apgar scores of 8 and 9 at 1 and 5 minutes, respectively. At the age of 12 days, the infant still required Foley catheterization because of voiding difficulty, so reduction cystoplasty was performed. The infant presented with recurrent episodes of intestinal obstruction thereafter and underwent ileostomy and resections of segmental intestine loops (3 times) in the ensuing years. At the age of 6 years, she is orally fed with partial parenteral infusion support, and the voiding act is satisfactory.ConclusionAttention should be given to the prenatal diagnosis of neonatal-onset CIPS when fetal congenital megacystis with unknown etiology is first detected. Whether there is any relationship between the megacystismicrocolon-intestinal-hypoperistalsis syndrome, CIPS, and pure congenital megacystis requires further study
Malignant ocular melanoma in a dog
A mongrel male dog of three years old was referred to the Seoul National University Veterinary Teaching Hospital following a one month history of glaucoma. On ophthalmic examination, hyphema, glaucoma, uveitis, iridal mass, and loss of vision were noted in the right eye. Ultrasonography and computed tomography revealed a mass with involvement of the entire uvea. Radiographic evaluation did not reveal any evidence of distant metastasis. The right eye was surgically removed because of the high likelihood of neoplasia. A histologic diagnosis of malignant uveal melanoma was made
A Dose Escalation Study of Trientine Plus Carboplatin and Pegylated Liposomal Doxorubicin in Women With a First Relapse of Epithelial Ovarian, Tubal, and Peritoneal Cancer Within 12 Months After Platinum-Based Chemotherapy
Background: Epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) is the leading cause of gynecological cancer-related deaths worldwide. Preclinical studies found that copper-lowering agents could re-sensitize platinum-resistant cancer cells by enhancing the human copper transporter 1 (hCtr1)-mediated uptake of platinum. In the clinic, re-sensitization of platinum-resistance in relapsed EOC has been discovered by the application of trientine plus platinum (NCT01178112). However, no pharmacokinetic data of trientine has been reported in cancer patients.Purpose: Our study aimed to explore the safety and activity of trientine combined with carboplatin and pegylated liposomal doxorubicin (PLD) in patients with EOC, tubal, and peritoneal cancer who experienced disease progression during platinum-based chemotherapy or showed relapse <12 months after completing first-line chemotherapy. Also, we aimed to demonstrate pharmacokinetic parameters and to discover potential biomarkers in our EOC patients. Methods: In this dose escalation study, 18 Asian patients in six dosing cohorts received fixed doses of carboplatin (AUC 4) and PLD (LipoDox®, TTY Biopharm Co. Ltd., Taipei, Taiwan) (40 mg/m2, day 1 per 4-week cycle), and escalated daily trientine doses (range: 300–1800 mg; initiated 7 days before the 1st combination cycle) according to a 3 + 3 design. Results: No dose-limiting toxicity or treatment-related death was observed. Four patients (22.2%) developed grade 3 drug-related adverse events (AEs), whereas no grade 4 AEs were encountered. Anemia and grade 2 dizziness were the most common hematological toxicity and neurotoxicity, respectively. In a pharmacokinetics comparison with healthy volunteers in the literature, our patients achieved greater absorption after oral trientinem, and more rapid elimination of triethylenetetramine dihydrochloride at high doses. The clinical benefit rate was 33.3 and 50.0% in the platinum-resistant and the partially platinum-sensitive group, respectively. A high baseline serum iron level and low serum copper level might help differentiate subgroups of patients with different clinical responses. Nevertheless, no associations of the clinical response with the levels of serum hCtr1, ceruloplasmin, or copper were observed. Conclusion: Combination therapy with carboplatin, trientine, and PLD was well-tolerated and safe. Our results encourage the development of a future phase II trial.Clinical trial registration:ClinicalTrials.gov # NCT03480750
Medial canthoplasty for epiphora in dogs: A retrospective study of 23 cases
The medical records of 23 dogs that underwent medial canthoplasty for treatment of epiphora were reviewed. The most prevalent breed encountered was the shih tzu. Other affected breeds included the Pekingese, Maltese, toy poodle, and pug. All dogs had epiphora associated with medial canthal trichiasis and/or entropion. Other ocular abnormalities included conjunctivitis, keratitis, pigmentary keratitis, corneal ulceration, globe prolapse, and nasal fold trichiasis. After medial canthoplasty, the epiphora resolved in all dogs. The authors thank the veterinarians who referred the dogs, and illustrator Un Gyu Lim for his drawing in the preparation of the illustration
The Application of Borehole Hydrogeological Investigation for Assessing Landslide Susceptibility
On the basis of 49 borehole studies at the mid- and upper-stream of the Dajia and Jhuoshuei river basins, landslide occurrence was found to not only be related to subsurface geological composition and hydrogeological characteristics, but also to groundwater level dynamics, which have seldom been addressed in previous works. It is suggested that the interplay between hydrogeologic and landslide factors be given further consideration in future investigations. This would be a crucial step towards effective disaster prevention for mountainous regions in Taiwan.
