Effect of Socio-Demographics, Health-Related Problems, and Family Structure on Chronic Absenteeism Among Children
Purpose/Background: From 5 to 7.5 million school children are chronically absent, defined as missing ≥15 days of school within a year. Students miss schools due to various reasons such as health, socioeconomic status, and environmental factors. We examined child’s health and behavior, family structure, and socio-demographics to understand chronic absenteeism.
Materials & Methods: The population included children ages 6 to 17 years from the Medical Expenditure Panel Survey (MEPS) years 2008-2013. Multivariable logistic regressions were used to identify the risk factors of chronic absenteeism, adjusting for the complex sampling design.
Results: Among socio-demographic variables, age ≥14 years, race/ethnicity, lower-income family, public health insurance, US-born, and speaking English at home were associated with chronic absenteeism. Asians, Mexican Hispanics, and blacks have lower chronic absenteeism than whites. Among health-related variables, children using an inhaler for asthma, having behavioral problems, and less healthy than other children were more likely to be chronically absent. Among family variables, a smaller family size was a risk factor for chronic absenteeism.
Discussion/Conclusion: Asthma and behavioral problems were highly associated with chronic absenteeism. The identification of children at risk for chronic absenteeism will help the educational professionals identify the barriers to academic achievements and develop integrated educational interventions and policies to support disadvantaged children
Preliminary Outcomes of Temporary Collagen Punctal Plugs for Patients with Dry Eye and Glaucoma
The aim of this study was using a temporary collagen punctal plug as a pre-test before decision of permanent punctal closure or long-term plug use for patients with dry eye disease (DED) and primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG). This case-control study was conducted at a single office in Honolulu, Hawaii from January 2017 to August 2018. In the case group, a temporary collagen plug was used in 33 eyes of 33 patients with DED and POAG who were receiving glaucoma medications with good control. On the other hand in the control group, 33 eyes of 33 patients with DED and POAG who were receiving glaucoma medications with good control were included, but punctal plug was not used. In the case group, one of the lower lid puncta was selected for the study and a canalicular rod shape plug was inserted as a therapeutic trial to predict the efficacy of long-term punctal plug placement or punctal closure. The mean changes of intraocular pressure (IOP) and improvement in symptoms/signs of DED were compared between the two study groups. Results revealed a statistically significant IOP reduction in the case group compared to the control group. Furthermore, DED improved significantly more in the case group compared to the control group (P< 0.001). We concluded that temporary punctal plug in patients with DED and POAG can significantly improve DED and lower IOP. Therefore, we could consider permanent punctal closure or long-term plug for patients with DED and POAG who responded well to temporary punctal plug without epiphora or other complications

Sodium Fluorescein Staining of the Cornea for the Diagnosis of Dry Eye: A Comparison of Three Eye Solutions
The purpose of this study was to identify which of the eye solutions is best for sodium fluorescein staining of the cornea to diagnose dry eye disease. The study included 173 eyes with suspected or known dry eye disease. The eyes were stained sequentially with sodium fluorescein and each of the following four conditions: balanced salt solution (BSS); BSS and cyclosporine 0.05% emulsion; BSS and lipids containing omega-3; and BSS, cyclosporine 0.05% emulsion, and lipids containing omega-3. Our results showed that compared to BSS alone, artificial tears with cyclosporine 0.05% emulsion and lipids containing omega-3 remain in the cornea for longer periods, thus allowing the clinician to evaluate tear break-up time and visualize corneal punctate erosions
Long-term in vivo imaging and measurement of dendritic shrinkage of retinal ganglion cells
PURPOSE. To monitor and measure dendritic shrinkage of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) in a strain of transgenic mice (Thy-1 YFP) that expresses yellow fluorescent proteins in neurons under the control of a Thy-1 promoter. METHODS. A total of 125 RGCs from 16 eyes of Thy-1 YFP transgenic mice were serially imaged with a confocal scanning laser ophthalmoscope for 6 months after optic nerve crush. Quantitative analysis of cell body area, axon diameter, dendritic field, number of terminal branches, total dendritic branch length, branching complexity, symmetry, and distance from the optic disc was used to characterize the morphology of RGCs, describe the patterns of axonal and dendritic degeneration, identify the morphologic predictors for cell survival, and estimate the rate of dendritic shrinkage. RESULTS. RGC damage was observed prospectively to begin with progressive dendritic shrinkage, followed by loss of the axon and the cell body. In a small proportion of RGCs, progressive axonal changes including fragmentation, beading, retraction, and bulb formation were also observed. RGCs with a larger dendritic field and a longer total dendritic branch length in general have a better survival probability. The rate of dendritic shrinkage was variable with a slower rate observed in cells having a larger dendritic field, a longer total dendritic branch length, and a greater distance from the optic disc. CONCLUSIONS. Estimating the probability of RGC survival and measuring the rate of dendritic shrinkage could become a new paradigm for investigating neuronal degeneration and evaluating the response of neuroprotective treatment. © 2011 The Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology, Inc.postprin
Serum Globotriaosylceramide Assay as a Screening Test for Fabry Disease in Patients with ESRD on Maintenance Dialysis in Korea
Phase II Study of Low-dose Paclitaxel and Cisplatin as a Second-line Therapy after 5-Fluorouracil/Platinum Chemotherapy in Gastric Cancer
This study was performed to evaluate the efficacy and toxicity of low-dose paclitaxel/cisplatin chemotherapy in patients with metastatic or recurrent gastric cancer that had failed 5-fluorouracil/platinum-based chemotherapy. Thirty-two patients with documented progression on or within 6 months after discontinuing 5-fluorouracil/platinum-based chemotherapy were enrolled. As a second-line treatment, paclitaxel (145 mg/m2) and cisplatin (60 mg/m2) was administered on day 1 every 3 weeks. Among 32 patients enrolled, 8 (25%) responded partially to paclitaxel/cisplatin, 8 (25%) had stable disease, and 14 (44%) had progressive disease. Two patients (6%) were not evaluable. The median time to progression (TTP) and overall survival for all patients were 2.9 months and 9.1 months, respectively. The most common hematologic toxicity was anemia (47%). Grade 3 neutropenia developed in three patients (9%), but no other grade 3/4 hematologic toxicity occurred. The most common non-hematologic toxicities were emesis (31%) and peripheral neuropathy (38%). Three cases (9%) of grade 3/4 emesis and 2 cases (6%) of grade 3 peripheral neuropathy developed. In conclusion, low-dose paclitaxel and cisplatin chemotherapy showed moderate activity with favorable toxicity profiles. However, relatively short TTP of this regimen warrants the development of more effective paclitaxel-based regimens other than combination with cisplatin in these patients as second-line therapies
Robust estimation of bacterial cell count from optical density
Optical density (OD) is widely used to estimate the density of cells in liquid culture, but cannot be compared between instruments without a standardized calibration protocol and is challenging to relate to actual cell count. We address this with an interlaboratory study comparing three simple, low-cost, and highly accessible OD calibration protocols across 244 laboratories, applied to eight strains of constitutive GFP-expressing E. coli. Based on our results, we recommend calibrating OD to estimated cell count using serial dilution of silica microspheres, which produces highly precise calibration (95.5% of residuals <1.2-fold), is easily assessed for quality control, also assesses instrument effective linear range, and can be combined with fluorescence calibration to obtain units of Molecules of Equivalent Fluorescein (MEFL) per cell, allowing direct comparison and data fusion with flow cytometry measurements: in our study, fluorescence per cell measurements showed only a 1.07-fold mean difference between plate reader and flow cytometry data
