    The motion of a neutrally buoyant particle of an elliptic shape in two dimensional shear flow: a numerical study

    In this paper, we investigate the motion of a neutrally buoyant cylinder of an elliptic shape freely moving in two dimensional shear flow by direct numerical simulation. An elliptic shape cylinder in shear flow, when initially being placed at the middle between two walls, either keeps rotating or has a stationary inclination angle depending on the particle Reynolds number Re=Grra2/νRe=G_r r_a^2/\nu, where GrG_r is the shear rate, rar_a is the semi-long axis of the elliptic cylinder and ν\nu is the kinetic viscosity of the fluid. The critical particle Reynolds number RecrRe_{cr} for the transition from a rotating motion to a stationary orientation depends on the aspect ratio AR=rb/raAR=r_b/r_a and the confined ratio K=2ra/HK=2r_a/H where rbr_b is the semi-short axis of the elliptic cylinder and HH is the distance between two walls. Although the increasing of either parameters makes an increase in RecrRe_{cr}, the dynamic mechanism is distinct. The ARAR variation causes the change of geometry shape; however, the KK variation influences the wall effect. The stationary inclination angle of non-rotating slender elliptic cylinder with smaller confined ratio seems to depend only on the value of ReRecrRe-Re_{cr}. An expected equilibrium position of the cylinder mass center in shear flow is the centerline between two walls, but when placing the particle away from the centerline initially, it migrates either toward an equilibrium height away from the middle between two walls or back to the middle depending on the confined ratio and particle Reynolds number.Comment: arXiv admin note: substantial text overlap with arXiv:1209.080

    Periodic Variability During the X-ray Decline of 4U 1636-53

    We report the onset of a large amplitude, statistically significant periodicity (~46 d) in the RXTE/ASM data of the prototype X-ray burster 4U 1636-53, the X-ray flux of which has been gradually declining over the last four years. This behaviour is remarkably similar to that observed in the neutron star LMXB KS 1731-260, which is a long-term transient. We also report on an INTEGRAL/IBIS observation of 4U 1636-53 during its decline phase, and find that the hard X-ray flux (20-100 keV) indicates an apparent anti-correlation with soft X-rays (2-12 keV). We argue that 4U 1636-53 is transiting from activity to quiescence, as occurred in KS 1731-260. We also suggest that the variability during the X-ray decline is the result of an accretion rate variability related to the X-ray irradiation of the disc.Comment: 6 pages. Accepted by MNRA

    Location based transmission using a neighbour aware with optimized EIFS MAC for ad hoc networks

    In a typical Ad Hoc network, participating nodes have scarce shared bandwidth and limited battery life resources, so resource optimization and enhancing the overall network performance are the primary aims to maintain functionality. This paper proposes a new cross layer Medium Access Control (MAC) algorithm called Location Based Transmission using a Neighbour Aware with optimized Extended Inter-Frame Spacing (EIFS) for Ad Hoc Networks MAC (LBT-NA with optimized-EIFS MAC) that aims to reduce the transmission power when communicating with the next hop receiver based on node’s location which is made available during node deployment. However, node mobility is not taken into account in the study of this paper. According to the algorithm the node dynamically adjusts its transmission power, if there is an active neighbour located beyond the communicating source and destination pair to avoid hidden nodes. The new protocol also defines an optimized EIFS when frame collision, frame error or frame capture takes place, in-order to maintain a fair channel access among the contending nodes. The proposed MAC also uses a modified range of random backoff values, based on the degree of contention unlike IEEE 802.11 series which uses a fixed random backoff value for fresh frames irrespective of the degree of contention. Simulation results indicate that in a random topology with a random source and destination, when the two sources are separated by a minimum distance of 200m, the performance gain of power controlled MAC over IEEE 802.11b ranges from 30% to 70% depending on the type of traffics in the network and the degree of fairness ranges from 62% to 99.99% for a location based MAC with minimum power transmission, whereas LBT-NA with optimized-EIFS MAC secures fairness index ranging from 75% to 99.99%. Communication with a node that is 20m away can save 40% of the battery life in comparison to the traditional transmission power MAC from 802.11b. The validation tests demonstrate that the proposed algorithm increases battery life and reduces the interference impact on shorter distance communication and increases the probability of parallel transmission. The proposed protocol also provides a scope for active nodes to transmit with a higher degree of probability, providing higher degree of overall network throughput in the environment and alleviate the starvation of hidden node by using Dynamic EIFS scheme

    Evasion of anti-growth signaling: a key step in tumorigenesis and potential target for treatment and prophylaxis by natural compounds

    The evasion of anti-growth signaling is an important characteristic of cancer cells. In order to continue to proliferate, cancer cells must somehow uncouple themselves from the many signals that exist to slow down cell growth. Here, we define the anti-growth signaling process, and review several important pathways involved in growth signaling: p53, phosphatase and tensin homolog (PTEN), retinoblastoma protein (Rb), Hippo, growth differentiation factor 15 (GDF15), AT-rich interactive domain 1A (ARID1A), Notch, insulin-like growth factor (IGF), and Krüppel-like factor 5 (KLF5) pathways. Aberrations in these processes in cancer cells involve mutations and thus the suppression of genes that prevent growth, as well as mutation and activation of genes involved in driving cell growth. Using these pathways as examples, we prioritize molecular targets that might be leveraged to promote anti-growth signaling in cancer cells. Interestingly, naturally-occurring phytochemicals found in human diets (either singly or as mixtures) may promote anti-growth signaling, and do so without the potentially adverse effects associated with synthetic chemicals. We review examples of naturally-occurring phytochemicals that may be applied to prevent cancer by antagonizing growth signaling, and propose one phytochemical for each pathway. These are: epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) for the Rb pathway, luteolin for p53, curcumin for PTEN, porphyrins for Hippo, genistein for GDF15, resveratrol for ARID1A, withaferin A for Notch and diguelin for the IGF1-receptor pathway. The coordination of anti-growth signaling and natural compound studies will provide insight into the future application of these compounds in the clinical setting

    Cross-National Differences in Victimization : Disentangling the Impact of Composition and Context

    Varying rates of criminal victimization across countries are assumed to be the outcome of countrylevel structural constraints that determine the supply ofmotivated o¡enders, as well as the differential composition within countries of suitable targets and capable guardianship. However, previous empirical tests of these ‘compositional’ and ‘contextual’ explanations of cross-national di¡erences have been performed upon macro-level crime data due to the unavailability of comparable individual-level data across countries. This limitation has had two important consequences for cross-national crime research. First, micro-/meso-level mechanisms underlying cross-national differences cannot be truly inferred from macro-level data. Secondly, the e¡ects of contextual measures (e.g. income inequality) on crime are uncontrolled for compositional heterogeneity. In this paper, these limitations are overcome by analysing individual-level victimization data across 18 countries from the International CrimeVictims Survey. Results from multi-level analyses on theft and violent victimization indicate that the national level of income inequality is positively related to risk, independent of compositional (i.e. micro- and meso-level) di¡erences. Furthermore, crossnational variation in victimization rates is not only shaped by di¡erences in national context, but also by varying composition. More speci¢cally, countries had higher crime rates the more they consisted of urban residents and regions with lowaverage social cohesion.

    Resonant Zener tunnelling via zero-dimensional states in a narrow gap diode

    Interband tunnelling of carriers through a forbidden energy gap, known as Zener tunnelling, is a phenomenon of fundamental and technological interest. Its experimental observation in the Esaki p-n semiconductor diode has led to the first demonstration and exploitation of quantum tunnelling in a condensed matter system. Here we demonstrate a new type of Zener tunnelling that involves the resonant transmission of electrons through zero-dimensional (0D) states. In our devices, a narrow quantum well of the mid-infrared (MIR) alloy In(AsN) is placed in the intrinsic (i) layer of a p-i-n diode. The incorporation of nitrogen in the quantum well creates 0D states that are localized on nanometer lengthscales. These levels provide intermediate states that act as “stepping stones” for electrons tunnelling across the diode and give rise to a negative differential resistance (NDR) that is weakly dependent on temperature. These electron transport properties have potential for the development of nanometre-scale non-linear components for electronics and MIR photonics

    Covariant Lagrange multiplier constrained higher derivative gravity with scalar projectors

    We formulate higher derivative gravity with Lagrange multiplier constraint and scalar projectors. Its gauge-fixed formulation as well as vector fields formulation is developed and corresponding spontaneous Lorentz symmetry breaking is investigated. We show that the only propagating mode is higher derivative graviton while scalar and vector modes do not propagate. Despite to higher derivatives structure of the action, its first FRW equation is the first order differential equation which admits the inflationary universe solution.Comment: Physics Letters B published version.
