    Solid/FEM integration at SNLA

    Get PDF
The effort at Sandia National Labs. on the methodologies and techniques being used to generate strict hexahedral finite element meshes from a solid model is described. The functionality of the modeler is used to decompose the solid into a set of nonintersecting meshable finite element primitives. The description of the decomposition is exported, via a Boundary Representative format, to the meshing program which uses the information for complete finite element model specification. Particular features of the program are discussed in some detail along with future plans for development which includes automation of the decomposition using artificial intelligence techniques

Charm Meson Mixing: An Experimental Review

We review current experimental results on charm mixing and CP violation. We survey experimental techniques, including time-dependent, time-independent, and quantum-correlated measurements. We review techniques that use a slow pion tag from D*+ --> pi+ D0 + c.c. decays and those that do not, and cover two-body and multi-body D0 decay modes. We provide a summary of D-mixing results to date and comment on future experimental prospects at the LHC and other new or planned facilities.Comment: 53 pages, 29 figures, 8 table

Climate Resiliency: Application of GIS Methods to Assess Flood Risk, Vulnerability, Potential Impacts, and Resiliency in Hidalgo County, Texas

    Get PDF
A contemporary concern towards the increased force of storms and massive rainfall occurrences caused by climate change are issues that can cause socio-economic disturbances, destruction of property, and loss of life. The implementation of techniques towards enhancing preparedness, planning, and mitigation, such as assessing risk and vulnerabilities through a Geographic Information System (GIS), can promote climate resiliency. This study measures the risk and vulnerabilities of assets within Hidalgo County through GIS spatial analysis. STATA and GIS results were used to summarize the number of vulnerable assets and assets at risk as well as assets exposed to flooding at the County and City scale. Data analysis results obtained for the major cities of Edinburg, McAllen, and Mission indicated a large proportion of aged buildings located in Special Flood Hazard Areas (SFHA\u27s) such as 100-year and 500-year flood zones

Infrared excesses in stars with and without planets using revised WISE{\it WISE} photometry

We present an analysis on the potential prevalence of mid infrared excesses in stars with and without planetary companions. Based on an extended database of stars detected with the WISE{\it WISE} satellite, we studied two stellar samples: one with 236 planet hosts and another with 986 objects for which planets have been searched but not found. We determined the presence of an excess over the photosphere by comparing the observed flux ratio at 22 μ\mum and 12 μ\mum (f22/f12f_{22}/f_{12}) with the corresponding synthetic value, derived from results of classical model photospheres. We found a detection rate of 0.85%\% at 22 μ\mum (2 excesses) in the sample of stars with planets and 0.1%\% (1 detection) for the stars without planets. The difference of the detection rate between the two samples is not statistically significant, a result that is independent of the different approaches found in the literature to define an excess in the wavelength range covered by WISE{\it WISE} observations. As an additional result, we found that the WISE{\it WISE} fluxes required a normalisation procedure to make them compatible with synthetic data, probably pointing out a revision of the WISE{\it WISE} data calibration.Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures, 3 tables. What makes or breaks a campaign to stop an invading plant pathogen?

Diseases in humans, animals and plants remain an important challenge in our society. Effective control of invasive pathogens often requires coordinated concerted action of a large group of stakeholders. Both epidemiological and human behavioural factors influence the outcome of a disease control campaign. In mathematical models that are frequently used to guide such campaigns, human behaviour is often ill-represented, if at all. Existing models of human, animal and plant disease that do incorporate participation or compliance are often driven by pay-offs or direct observations of the disease state. It is however very well known that opinion is an important driving factor of human decision making. Here we consider the case study of Citrus Huanglongbing disease (HLB), which is an acute bacterial disease that threatens the sustainability of citrus production across the world. We show how by coupling an epidemiological model of this invasive disease with an opinion dynamics model we are able to answer the question: What makes or breaks the effectiveness of a disease control campaign? Frequent contact between stakeholders and advisors is shown to increase the probability of successful control. More surprisingly, we show that informing stakeholders about the effectiveness of control methods is of much greater importance than prematurely increasing their perceptions of the risk of infection. We discuss the overarching consequences of this finding and the effect on human as well as plant disease epidemics

The Dark Energy Equation of State using Alternative High-z Cosmic Tracers

We propose to use alternative cosmic tracers to measure the dark energy equation of state and the matter content of the Universe [w(z) & Omega_m]. Our proposed method consists of two components: (a) tracing the Hubble relation using HII galaxies which can be detected up to very large redshifts, z~4, as an alternative to supernovae type Ia, and (b) measuring the clustering pattern of X-ray selected AGN at a median redshift of z~1. Each component of the method can in itself provide interesting constraints on the cosmological parameters, especially under our anticipation that we will reduce the corresponding random and systematic errors significantly. However, by joining their likelihood functions we will be able to put stringent cosmological constraints and break the known degeneracies between the dark energy equation of state (whether it is constant or variable) and the matter content of the universe and provide a powerful and alternative route to measure the contribution to the global dynamics and the equation of state of dark energy. A preliminary joint analysis of X-ray selected AGN (based on the largest to-date XMM survey; the 2XMM) and the currently largest SNIa sample (Hicken et al.), using as priors a flat universe and the WMAP5 normalization of the power-spectrum, provides: Omega_m=0.27+-0.02 and w=-0.96+-0.07. Equivalent and consistent results are provided by the joint analysis of X-ray selected AGN clustering and the latest Baryonic Acoustic Oscillation measures, providing: Omega_m=0.27+-0.02 and w=-0.97+-0.04.Comment: Different versions of this paper appear in the "Dark Universe" conference (Paris, July 2009) and in the "1st Mediterranean Conference in Classical & Quantum Gravity" (invited

Fracture in Phenolic Impregnated Carbon Ablator

The thermal protection materials used for spacecraft heat shields are subjected to various thermal-mechanical loads during an atmospheric entry which can threaten the structural integrity of the system. This paper discusses the development of a novel technique to understand the failure mechanisms inside thermal protection materials. The focus of research is Phenolic Impregnated Carbon Ablator (PICA). It has successfully flown on the Stardust spacecraft and is the TPS material chosen for the Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) and Dragon spacecraft. Although PICA has good thermal properties, structurally, it is a weak material. In order to thoroughly understand failure in PICA, fracture tests were performed on FiberForm* (precursor of PICA), virgin and charred PICA materials. Several samples of these materials were tested to investigate failure mechanisms at a microstructural scale. Stress-strain data were obtained simultaneously to estimate the fracture toughness. It was found that cracks initiated and grew in the FiberForm when a critical stress limit was reached such that the carbon fibers separated from the binder. However, both for virgin and charred PICA, crack initiation and growth occurred in the matrix (phenolic) phase. Both virgin and charred PICA showed greater strength values compared to FiberForm coupons, confirming that the presence of the porous matrix helps in absorbing the fracture energy
