Open-angle glaucoma is the most common and prevalent ocular affectation in the world, this disease generally affects people over 40 years of age in 90% of the population. Glaucoma occurs when intraocular pressure is elevated because the duct becomes blocked and fluid cannot drain normally. This type of glaucomatous optic neuropathy is very silent and often does not present any sign or symptom that alerts patients, which is why it is extremely important to recognize this ocular pathology in its early stages, through a good diagnosis accompanied by a good ocular examination, in order to avoid complications, such as the gradual loss of sight on the side that is affected, since it is one of the main complications of this type of glaucoma. For this we are going to explain the importance of the benefit of early clinical management of open-angle glaucoma. For this, a non- experimental study will be carried out, of a narrative type of bibliographic review. The correct clinical management of patients suffering from this ophthalmopathy is important, since in this way it will be less complicated to treat it early, without it evolving and can generate or bring with it multiple affectations, which in the end will end up deteriorating the view of the patient and lifestyle as such. This is why it is of great importance to be able to diagnose this type of ocular involvement in a timely and early manner

Background: Laser vision correction for refractive errors includes two main procedures: laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) and surface treatment. Photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) was the first surface treatment introduced since the late 1980s. In this photoablation procedure, the ultraviolet beam generated by a 193-nm argon fluoride excimer laser is irradiated into the corneal stroma, after epithelial excision, to reshape the anterior corneal stroma to correct ametropia. Objective: To compare the LASIK VS the PRK technique, with respect to corneal laser refractive surgery (CR). Methodology: A narrative-type bibliographic review was carried out, searching in different scientific databases such as SpringerLink, PubMed, Dialnet, Scopus, Sciencedirect, Scielo, Medline. For the keywords or search terms, the Descriptors in Health Sciences (DeCS)/(MeSH) were terms, and, in addition to the use of Boolean operators such as "AND" and "OR". After the eligibility criteria, 15 articles were analyzed and included in the analysis of this review. Results: Of the 15 articles used, and based on the objectives, the result is that both LASIK and PRK are safe and effective procedures, due to prompt visual recovery, good refractive results, and postoperative period with minimal discomfort. Mitomycin C application helps reduce the risk of corneal haze, similarly between the two techniques. Regarding complications, corneal ectasia, striae, folds, flap dislocation, interface deposits, infection, diffuse lamellar keratitis, among others, were found. Conclusions: Laser surgery (CR) is a safe and effective procedure, in any of the applied techniques. What has helped to improve the results of these techniques is the application of the MMC which, both in LASIK and PRK, helps to improve predictability and significantly reduces corneal haze, as the most common complication; in this regard, corneal ectasia, dry eye and keratitis, which, although rare, deep knowledge of the complications can help reduce their appearance, and early identification with adequate treatment in time can save these eyes of vision loss.

Introduction: Glaucoma is a global public health problem and is a multifactorial disease that can go unnoticed because it is initially asymptomatic. Despite advances in glaucoma prevention programs, medical treatment remains the cornerstone for improving the quality of life of glaucoma patients. Objective: To determine the use of rho kinase inhibitors in the treatment of open-angle glaucoma. Methodology: Narrative-type bibliographic review, searches were carried out in health databases such as Elsevier, Springer Link, Cochrane Library, PubMed, Dialnet, Scopus. Keywords were used which were terms of the descriptors in health sciences (DeCS) and (MeSH), at the same time, Boolean operators such as: "AND", "NOT" and "OR" were used. According to the eligibility criteria, 8 articles were analyzed and included in this review. Results: Based on the objectives and the 8 articles included in this review, it was obtained as a result that rho kinase inhibitors promise to have, but do not demonstrate greater efficacy than first-line drugs used in glaucoma, which makes it an adjuvant antiglaucoma drug and not first-line therapy. The main adverse reactions caused by the treatment are: conjunctival hyperemia, conjunctival hemorrhage, allergic conjunctivitis, dry eye and blepharitis. Conclusions: Treatment with rho kinase inhibitors to reduce IOP in glaucoma patients promises to be highly effective when used as combination therapy. Regarding safety, its side effects were generally mild and went away on their own.

    Retinoblastoma management: a systematic review

    Get PDF
Retinoblastoma is a rare cancer that occurs in children under 5 years of age from which leukocoria and strabismus are the characteristic signs of this disease. For every 16,000 to 18,000 newborns worldwide, one will get retinoblastoma, while at the Latin American context there are no reported data due to scant research. Therefore, the reason for this research is to describe the management of retinoblastoma. Trauma, human papillomavirus (HPV), and genetic alterations in the RB1 gene are possible causative factors for retinoblastoma. The diagnosis is based on the clinic, genetic tests, imaging tests and in cases of metastasis, a cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) aspiration is performed through lumbar puncture. There is another method such as non-invasive prenatal diagnosis (NIPD), here the main diagnosis is indirect ophthalmoscopy. The treatment is directly related to the evolution of the disease using different methods such as enucleation, cryotherapy, chemotherapy and radiotherapy that can be used individually or in combination to improve the quality of life of the patient; however, enucleation followed by chemotherapy remain as the main method of treatment

The risk of COVID-19 death is much greater and age dependent with type I IFN autoantibodies

    No full text
International audienceSignificance There is growing evidence that preexisting autoantibodies neutralizing type I interferons (IFNs) are strong determinants of life-threatening COVID-19 pneumonia. It is important to estimate their quantitative impact on COVID-19 mortality upon SARS-CoV-2 infection, by age and sex, as both the prevalence of these autoantibodies and the risk of COVID-19 death increase with age and are higher in men. Using an unvaccinated sample of 1,261 deceased patients and 34,159 individuals from the general population, we found that autoantibodies against type I IFNs strongly increased the SARS-CoV-2 infection fatality rate at all ages, in both men and women. Autoantibodies against type I IFNs are strong and common predictors of life-threatening COVID-19. Testing for these autoantibodies should be considered in the general population
