Image Tagging and Gearing Resources applied to students’ graphic materials: Learning techniques in pursuit of Inclusiveness for Urban and Landscape Design

    Get PDF
Inclusiveness can be considered a requirement for contemporary statements in urban and landscape design referring to age, condition, gender or nature. But how is inclusiveness influenced by spatial design? Can this relation be measured or proven? And more precisely, which interactions are considered across different generations or between human and non-human agents? This paper describes student‚Äôs work evaluation procedures through a methodology consisting of selecting picture-based content from initial reference materials provided by teaching staff, as well as graphic material designed and produced by the students, to further analyze these through data visualization techniques and the production of info-graphics. In a latter step, a gearing game ‚Äď which is a type of sociogram used to understand agents and matters of interest ‚Äď is utilized to drive a discussion about design statements for further stages of development concerning students‚Äô design projects. The first stages of the methodology are strongly influenced by how the students perceive elements from reference materials and represent these in their own design productions. A literature review further investigates the dichotomy between representation and perception, and the generation of subjective images. As a final consideration, this work aims to create combined methodologies by incorporating participatory observation methods (e.g. photovoice and flow charts) from the social sciences into urban and landscape design, as they are understood through an accurate design of the learning experience. Similarly, non-representational design and dataviz diagrams from urban and landscape design could potentially be implemented in the teaching of social sciences

Biodiversity of inland saltscapes of the Iberian Peninsula

    Get PDF
The Iberian Peninsula hosts a wide variety of inland saltscapes, from man-made solar evaporation salterns to hyper-saline lakes and salt rivers, most of them unknown to other European countries. The present contribution deals with this diversity of saltscapes, briefly introduces their main features and locations, and presents a general overview of their conservation status. Some of their natural values are not even well understood by the scientists themselves, and therefore they are very rare and fragile and in need of protection. However, many of these natural saltscapes have been and are currently under threat, having been desiccated, used as waste dumps or polluted with irrigation runoff. With respect to artificial salinas, these have been halting their activity in the last decades. Generally, historically, salt-making operations occurred where hypersaline environments already existed. These locations were converted into commercial operations. As these, too, are phased out, the loss of production has negatively affected the halophilic plant and animal communities. These results are based on empirical field observations, and a comprehensive inventory and status report of Iberian saltscapes is needed to support the ideas presented here

    Get PDF

This research analyzes the communication practices of Per√ļ presidential candidates Julio Guzm√°n and Ver√≥nika Mendoza in their social networks, during the COVID-19 pandemic, from the beginning of the State of Emergency, due to the appearance of COVID-19 in Per√ļ (March 15th, 2020), to six months later (September 15th, 2020). We want to account for the degree of engagement they obtained since interacting with their respective audiences. We emphasized the communication that they both generated ‚ÄĒin their posts‚ÄĒ around the development of live video broadcasts on social networks, which we call SMLS (Social Media Live Streaming) events. Content analysis has been used for the quantitative method and nethnography was used in a qualitative way. For these purposes, we worked on a sample of 20 posts by J. G and 41 by V.M in their respective Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter account for the year 2020. The results indicate that they both had no real intentions of generating a two-way dialogue with their followers. Moreover, while Guzm√°n sought to position himself around the group of his political party and its members, Mendoza sought to do so based on his interest and closeness to specific problems and vulnerable communities

Teachers' trialing procedures for Computer Assisted Language Testing Implementation

    Get PDF
Problem Statement: Computer assisted language testing is becoming more frequent in many parts of Europe and the world. Likewise, in many countries like Spain, Greece, or Turkey (among many more), there is a move towards integrating information technologies and computers in high stakes testing. However, due to the limited information on this topic, it is necessary to provide active and training teachers with pieces of simple, accessible research that can help them understand the complex processes involved in designing language testing platforms or the relationship between computers and tests. Purpose of the Study: The main goal of this paper was to examine different approaches to computer based language testing design and also show one example done in Spain which may also be valid for different contexts and countries like many university entrance examinations in Europe or the √ĖSYM in Turkey.Ministerio de Educaci√≥n y Cienci
