The effect of immigration on the employment opportunities of native-born workers : some evidence for Spain
Spain is one of the European countries where immigration flows during the last decade have increased noticeably. The Spanish labor market institutions and the Spanish immigration policy exhibit some peculiarities which may be relevant when analyzing the impact of immigration. This paper provides a first approximation to the labor market effects of immigrants in Spain during the second half of the 1990s, the period in which immigration flows to Spain have accelerated. By using alternative datasets, we estimate both the impact of legal and total immigration flows on the employment rates of native workers, accounting for the possible occupationa l and geographical mobility of immigrants and native-born workers. Using different samples and estimation procedures, we have not found a significant negative effect of immigration on the employment rates of native workers. The corresponding estimated elasticity is low, around -0.1, when considering only legal immigrants, and is not significant when considering both legal and illegal immigrants
The impact of immigration on the wage structure : Spain 1995-2002
In this paper we estimate the impact of inward migration flows on the Spanish wage
structure over the period 1995-2002 by constructing counterfactual wage distributions
that provide the wages that would have been observed had individual and job
characteristics remain constant over time. Hence, we compute the impact of
immigration on the wage distribution from (i) the estimated wage gaps between similar
immigrants and native workers and (ii) the changes in the composition of employment
associated to the arrival of new immigrants.
Overall, we find that (i) the effects of immigration on wage changes are small and only
noticeable when job characteristics are included as determinants of wages, and (ii) the
correlation between the incidence of immigration in each decile of the wage distribution
and the change in native wages not explained by changes in their individual and job
characteristics is positive. These results suggest that other factors, besides immigration,
should be identified as the key determinants of the wage moderation observed since the
early nineties in Spain
SOLUBILIZATION OF P-ALKYLPHENOLS IN PLURONICS F-68 AND F-127 MICELLES: PARTITION COEFFICIENTS AND EFFECT OF SOLUTE ON THE AGGREGATE STRUCTURE
IndexaciĂłn: Web of Science; Scielo. The partition of a series of substituted phenols between water and polymer micelles formed by Pluronic F-68 and F-127 has been studied. The formation of micelles by these block copolymers has been evidenced by steady-state fluorescence and dynamic light scattering. The data show that micelles and larger aggregates are formed above the critical micelle concentration. In presence of p-alkylphenols a micelle rearrangement occurs that leads to the formation of just one and large aggregate. This effect depends both on polymer and phenols structures. The partition coefficients and the standard free energies of transfer from the aqueous to the micellar phases were determined. The incremental free energy for a methylene group are 2.88 kJ mol-1 and 1.65 kJ mol-1 for F-127 and F-68, respectively. This difference is explained in terms of the core sizes that are determined by the length of the PPO block.http://ref.scielo.org/xfqmx
Infinite charge mobility in muscovite at 300K
Evidence is presented for infinite charge mobility in natural crystals of
muscovite mica at room temperature. Muscovite has a basic layered structure
containing a flat monatomic sheet of potassium sandwiched between mirror
silicate layers. It is an excellent electrical insulator. Studies of defects in
muscovite crystals indicated that positive charge could propagate over great
distances along atomic chains in the potassium sheets in absence of an applied
electric potential. The charge moved in association with anharmonic lattice
excitations that moved at about sonic speed and created by nuclear recoil of
the radioactive isotope K40. This was verified by measuring currents passing
through crystals when irradiated with energetic alpha particles at room
temperature. The charge propagated more than 1000 times the range of the alpha
particles of average energy and 250 times the range of channelling particles of
maximum energy. The range is limited only by size of the crystal.Comment: 6 pages, 8 figure

GeMs/GSAOI observations of La Serena 94: an old and far open cluster inside the solar circle
Physical properties were derived for the candidate open cluster La Serena 94,
recently unveiled by the VVV collaboration. Thanks to the exquisite angular
resolution provided by GeMS/GSAOI, we could characterize this system in detail,
for the first time, with deep photometry in JHK - bands. Decontaminated
JHK diagrams reach about 5 mag below the cluster turnoff in H. The locus
of red clump giants in the colour - colour diagram, together with an extinction
law, was used to obtain an average extinction of . The
same stars were considered as standard - candles to derive the cluster
distance, kpc. Isochrones were matched to the cluster colour -
magnitude diagrams to determine its age, , and
metallicity, . A core radius of pc was
found by fitting King models to the radial density profile. By adding up the
visible stellar mass to an extrapolated mass function, the cluster mass was
estimated as M, consistent with an
integrated magnitude of and a tidal radius of
pc. The overall characteristics of La Serena 94 confirm that
it is an old open cluster located in the Crux spiral arm towards the fourth
Galactic quadrant and distant kpc from the Galactic centre. The
cluster distorted structure, mass segregation and age indicate that it is a
dynamically evolved stellar system.Comment: 16 pages, 24 figures, 2 Tables, accepted by MNRAS; corrected typo
Haffner 16: A Young Moving Group in the Making
The photometric properties of main sequence (MS) and pre-main sequence (PMS)
stars in the young cluster Haffner 16 are examined using images recorded with
the Gemini South Adaptive Optics Imager (GSAOI) and corrected for atmospheric
blurring by the Gemini Multi-Conjugate Adapative Optics System (GeMS). A rich
population of PMS stars is identified, and comparisons with isochrones suggest
an age < 10 Myr assuming a distance modulus of 13.5 (D = 5 kpc). When compared
with the solar neighborhood, Haffner 16 is roughly a factor of two deficient in
objects with sub-solar masses. PMS objects in the cluster are also more
uniformly distributed on the sky than bright MS stars. It is suggested that
Haffner 16 is dynamically evolved, and that it is shedding protostars with
sub-solar masses. Young low mass clusters like Haffner 16 are one possible
source of PMS stars in the field. The cluster will probably evolve on time
scales of ~ 100 - 1000 Myr into a diffuse moving group with a mass function
that is very different from that which prevailed early in its life.Comment: To appear in the Publications of the Astronomical Society of the
