Life just got complicated
The fossil record of ancient life is, in general, poor. Certainly, fossils are abundant in many
rock successions and may reveal remarkable details about evolution and environmental
change, but they typically consist of disarticulated or broken skeletal material, such
as shells, bones and teeth. Even worse, the record of entirely (or largely) soft-bodied
organisms, such as jellyfish and worms, is extremely scant, despite the fact that such
animals dominate modern marine environments and presumably did so in the past. The
reason is obvious — such organisms are highly susceptible to post-mortem decay and
typically decompose more rapidly than the ‘normal’ processes of fossilisation operate. This
significantly blurs our view of ancient life, with obvious consequences for those interested in
understanding evolution and past ecosystems

A 45-year-old Female with an Atypical Presentation of Pharyngitis
Introduction: Emergency physicians are trained to treat a variety of ailments in the emergency department (ED), some of which are emergent, while others are not. A common complaint seen in the ED is a sore throat. While most sore throats are easily diagnosed and treated, less common causes are often not considered in the differential diagnoses. Therefore, the purpose of this case study was to present an atypical case of sore throat and discuss differential diagnoses.Case Presentation: The patient was a 45-year-old female who presented to the ED with a three-day history of sore throat that was exacerbated by eating and drinking. The patient was not on any prescription medications, but tried over-the-counter medications for the sore throat without any improvement in symptoms. Review of systems was positive for sore throat, fevers, and chills. Physical examination of her oropharynx revealed mildly dry mucous membranes with confluent plaques and white patchy ulcerative appearance involving the tongue, tonsils, hard palate, and soft palate. Rapid streptococcal antigen, mononucleosis spot test, and KOH test were performed and found to be negative.Discussion: After initial testing was negative, a follow-up complete blood count with differential and complete metabolic profile were ordered. The patient was found to have decreased lymphocytes and platelets. Based upon those results, a diagnosis was made in the ED, the patient was started on medication, and further laboratory workup was ordered to confirm the diagnosis. ED providers should consider non-infectious as well as infectious causes for a sore throat, as this might lead to a diagnosis of an underlying condition
Institutional Change and Firm Adaptation
We develop a typology of organizational forms found in Southeast Asia that contains four major archetypes, Colonial Business Groups, Family Business Groups, Government Linked Enterprises, and New Managers. We explain how the institutional environment prevailing at their founding profoundly influence the strategies and capabilities of each form. Consequently, strategic repertoires and competencies that are imperfectly aligned with environmental conditions largely delimit the capacity for organizational adaptation in the face of environmental change. We discuss the consequences of such a pattern of path dependence for each organizational form as well as the social and economic systems in which they are embedded
Organisational Path-Dependence and Institutional Environment
Through a case study of Chinese Family Business Groups (FBGs) in East Asia, this paper examines the relationship between the strategic behaviour exhibited by an organisational form and it's administrative heritage. To do so, we trace the origins of the strategic behaviour which scholars commonly attribute to FBGs to the environmental conditions prevailing during their emergence in the turbulent post-Colonial era of East Asia. We explain how fundamental changes brought about by shifts in the post-Cold war environment of East Asia have confronted FBGs with new opportunities and organising imperatives which their administrative heritages have left them ill-equipped to deal with. In concluding, we explain how the lack of fit between a dominant organisational form and contemporaneous environmental conditions may have significant implications for the organisations themselves and the economies whose landscape's they dominate

Mandatory immunization for school age children in the 20th Century led to a substantial decline in infectious disease.
All US states allow medical exemptions from immunizations with 49 permitting additional religious exemptions and 19 permitting additional philosophical exemptions.
Vaccine exemptions have lead to an increase in the incidence of disease outbreaks.
Healthcare providers play a critical role in educating parents about the benefits and risks of immunizations.

An Error Analysis of the Phased Array Antenna Pointing Algorithm for STARS Flight Demonstration No. 2
STARS is a multicenter NASA project to determine the feasibility of using space-based assets, such as the Tracking and Data Relay Satellite System (TDRSS) and Global Positioning System (GPS), to increase flexibility (e.g. increase the number of possible launch locations and manage simultaneous operations) and to reduce operational costs by decreasing the need for ground-based range assets and infrastructure. The STARS project includes two major systems: the Range Safety and Range User systems. The latter system uses broadband communications (125 kbps to 500 kbps) for voice, video, and vehicle/payload data. Flight Demonstration #1 revealed the need to increase the data rate of the Range User system. During Flight Demo #2, a Ku-band antenna will generate a higher data rate and will be designed with an embedded pointing algorithm to guarantee that the antenna is pointed directly at TDRS. This algorithm will utilize the onboard position and attitude data to point the antenna to TDRS within a 2-degree full-angle beamwidth. This report investigates how errors in aircraft position and attitude, along with errors in satellite position, propagate into the overall pointing vector
Glycosaminoglycan Synthesis by Human Keratinocytes: Cell Growth and Medium Calcium Effects
The influences of cell density, differentiation, and medium calcium levels on glycosaminoglycan biosynthesis were evaluated in cultured human epidermal keratinocytes. Following metabolic labeling with [35S]-sulfate and [3H]-glucosamine under steady state conditions in “high” medium calcium (> 1.0 mMol), the majority of sulfated glycosaminoglycans remained associated with the cell layers, whereas hyaluronic acid, which was present in smaller amounts than the sulfated products, was about equally distributed between the medium and the cell layers. Of the sulfated glycosaminoglycans, heparan sulfate and chondroitin 4/6-sulfate were the major species and were present in roughly comparable amounts, whereas dermatan sulfate was quantitatively the lesser of the products. The effects of “low” medium calcium (0.3 and 0.025 mM) were complex, although a consistent decrease in the incorporation of the [3H]-glucosamine precursor was found at high cell density, probably reflecting a decrease in its intracellular specific activity. In “high” calcium cultures, there was a strong inverse correlation (r = -0.92) between keratinocyte cell number and cellular production of sulfated glycosaminoglycans, whereas no such relationship was evident in cultures grown in “low” calcium medium at comparable cell density. Because keratinocyte differentiation is inhibited in the low calcium conditions, the results suggest that the decrease in production of sulfated glycosaminoglycans by confluent keratinocytes may actually correlate with differentiation rather than with cell number
Insular Interconnectivity in the Viking Age: A Geospatial View from Norse Jarlshof
During the Viking Age, settlements and trading centers were often located near lakes, seas, waterways, and sailing routes. As such, access to other locations was facilitated, whether for the purpose of settlement, trade, resource acquisition, or conflict, by some form of seafaring vessel or watercraft. Over the course of the Scandinavian Diaspora, a level of cultural and economic interconnectedness was maintained between mainland Scandinavia and the settlements in the North Atlantic region. This shared link with Scandinavia contributed to the development of local connections between insular and coastal sites within the broader diasporic network. This thesis considers the archaeological evidence for insular interconnectivity during the Viking Age ca. 790-1066 CE in the British Isles and North Atlantic, as well as the potential for using a GIS-based joint visibility and mobility model that depicts the experiential use of, and interaction between, past landscapes and seascapes while maintaining a quantitative approach. This is considered through the evaluation of intervisibility between a mobile sailing ship entering the mouth of Grutness Voe and the occupants of the Norse farmstead at the Jarlshof archaeological site, Mainland, Shetland over the course of its occupation ca.850-1200 CE. The results of this research support the argument that the investigation of the diasporic maritime communities of the Viking Age can benefit from the use geospatial technology to evaluate insular interconnectivity and to better conceptualize broader patterns within those extensive maritime networks. Broadly speaking, these findings can also inform our understanding of coastal and insular populations in the past, and the way that they have engaged with their environment, both aqueous and terrestrial.

Lake Champlain Water Quality: A Study of Public Awareness, Perceptions, and Behavior
Introduction: Lake Champlain serves as a major source of drinking water and a prime recreational area in Vermont. The Vermont Department of Health actively monitors Lake Champlain water quality, generates informational resources, and issues restrictions and advisories as necessary. Key water quality issues include: blue-green algae blooms (BGAB), combined sewer overflow (CSO), mercury-based fish consumption advisories, and suitability for recreational use. Determining public awareness of Lake Champlain water quality, and how perceptions of Lake Champlain water quality influence behavior, are essential to improving communication with at-risk and underinformed populations.https://scholarworks.uvm.edu/comphp_gallery/1233/thumbnail.jp
