Fundamental study of transpiration cooling
Isothermal and non-isothermal pressure drop data and heat transfer data generated on porous 304L stainless steel wire forms, sintered spherical stainless steel powder, and sintered spherical OFHC copper powder are reported and correlated. Pressure drop data was collected over a temperature range from 500 R to 2000 R and heat transfer data collected over a heat flux range from 5 to 15 BTU/in2/sec. It was found that flow data could be correlated independently of transpirant temperature and type (i.e., H2, N2). It was also found that no simple relation between heat transfer coefficient and specimen porosity was obtainable
Atlas of abundance and distribution patterns of ichthyoplankton from the Northeast Pacific Ocean and Bering Sea ecosystems: based on research conducted by the Alaska Fisheries Science Center (1972–1996)
This regional atlas summarizes and illustrates the distribution and abundance patterns of fish eggs and larvae of 102 taxa within 34 families found in the Northeast Pacific Ocean including the Bering Sea, Gulf of Alaska, and U.S. west coast ecosystems. Data were collected over a 20+ year period (1972–1996) by the Recruitment Processes Program of the Alaska Fisheries Science Center (AFSC).
Ichthyoplankton catch records used in this atlas were generated from 11,379 tows taken during 100 cruises.
For each taxon, general life history data are briefly summarized from the literature. Published information on distribution patterns of eggs and larvae are reviewed for the study area. Data from AFSC ichthyoplankton collections were combined to produce an average spatial distribution for each taxon. These data were also used to estimate mean abundance and percent occurrence by year and month, and relative abundance by larval length and season. Abundance from each tow was measured as catch per 10 m2 surface area. A larval distribution and abundance map was produced with a geographic information system using ArcInfo software. For taxa with identifiable pelagic eggs, distribution maps showing presence or absence of eggs are presented. Presence
or absence of adults in the study area is mapped based on recent literature and data from AFSC groundfish surveys.
Distributional records for adults and early life history stages revealed several new range extensions. (PDF file contains 288 pages.
Remote sensing techniques for mapping range sites and estimating range yield
Image interpretation procedures for determining range yield and for extrapolating range information were investigated for an area of the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in southwestern South Dakota. Soil and vegetative data collected in the field utilizing a grid sampling design and digital film data from color infrared film and black and white films were analyzed statistically using correlation and regression techniques. The pattern recognition techniques used were K-class, mode seeking, and thresholding. The herbage yield equation derived for the detailed test site was used to predict yield for an adjacent similar field. The herbage yield estimate for the adjacent field was 1744 lbs. of dry matter per acre and was favorably compared to the mean yield of 1830 lbs. of dry matter per acre based upon ground observations. Also an inverse relationship was observed between vegetative cover and the ratio of MSS 5 to MSS 7 of ERTS-1 imagery

Radiofrequency superconductivity applied to free-electron lasers
Low wall losses and low wakefields inherent in superconducting radiofrequency (srf) cavities make them attractive candidates for accelerators that operate efficiently at high continuous-wave (cw) gradients. Such accelerators are desirable for free-electron lasers (FELs) that extract high-power cw light from a high-average-current electron beam, or that produce ultrashort-wavelength light from a high-energy electron beam. Efficiency is a prime consideration in the former case, while high electron-beam quality is a prime consideration in the latter case. This paper summarizes the status of FEL projects involving srf accelerators. It also introduces Jefferson Lab`s srf FEL and surveys its design because it is a new machine, with commissioning having commenced in October 1997. Once commissioning is complete, this FEL should produce tunable, cw, kW-level light at 3-6 {mu}m wavelength
PREDICTIVE TIME MODEL OF AN ANGLIA AUTOFLOW MECHANICAL CHICKEN CATCHING SYSTEM
In this project, a predictive time model was developed for an Anglia Autoflow mechanical chicken catching system. At the completion of poultry growout, hand labor is currently used to collect the birds from the house, although some integrators are beginning to incorporate mechanical catching equipment. Several regression models were investigated with the objective of predicting the time taken to catch the chicken. A regression model relating distance to total time (sum of packing time, catching time, movement to catching and movement to packing) provided the best performance. The model was based on data collected from poultry farms on the Delmarva Peninsula during a six-month period. Statistical Analysis System (SAS) and NeuroShell Easy Predictor were used to build the regression and neural network models respectively. Model adequacy was established by both visual inspection and statistical techniques. On the "Matsubara heating" of overtone intensities and Fermi splittings.
Classical molecular dynamics (MD) and imaginary-time path-integral dynamics methods underestimate the infrared absorption intensities of overtone and combination bands by typically an order of magnitude. Plé et al. [J. Chem. Phys. 155, 2863 (2021)] have shown that this is because such methods fail to describe the coupling of the centroid to the Matsubara dynamics of the fluctuation modes; classical first-order perturbation theory (PT) applied to the Matsubara dynamics is sufficient to recover most of the lost intensity in simple models and gives identical results to quantum (Rayleigh-Schrödinger) PT. Here, we show numerically that the results of this analysis can be used as post-processing correction factors, which can be applied to realistic (classical MD or path-integral dynamics) simulations of infrared spectra. We find that the correction factors recover most of the lost intensity in the overtone and combination bands of gas-phase water and ammonia and much of it for liquid water. We then re-derive and confirm the earlier PT analysis by applying canonical PT to Matsubara dynamics, which has the advantage of avoiding secular terms and gives a simple picture of the perturbed Matsubara dynamics in terms of action-angle variables. Collectively, these variables "Matsubara heat" the amplitudes of the overtone and combination vibrations of the centroid to what they would be in a classical system with the oscillators (of frequency Ωi) held at their quantum effective temperatures [of ℏΩi coth(βℏΩi/2)/2kB]. Numerical calculations show that a similar neglect of "Matsubara heating" causes path-integral methods to underestimate Fermi resonance splittings
Metabolomic study of the LDL receptor null mouse fed a high-fat diet reveals profound perturbations in choline metabolism that are shared with ApoE null mice
Failure to express or expression of dysfunctional low-density lipoprotein receptors (LDLR) causes familial hypercholesterolemia in humans, a disease characterized by elevated blood cholesterol concentrations, xanthomas, and coronary heart disease, providing compelling evidence that high blood cholesterol concentrations cause atherosclerosis. In this study, we used 1H nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy to examine the metabolic profiles of plasma and urine from the LDLR knockout mice. Consistent with previous studies, these mice developed hypercholesterolemia and atherosclerosis when fed a high-fat/cholesterol/cholate-containing diet. In addition, multivariate statistical analysis of the metabolomic data highlighted significant differences in tricarboxylic acid cycle and fatty acid metabolism, as a result of high-fat/cholesterol diet feeding. Our metabolomic study also demonstrates that the effect of high-fat/cholesterol/cholate diet, LDLR gene deficiency, and the diet-genotype interaction caused a significant perturbation in choline metabolism, notably the choline oxidation pathway. Specifically, the loss in the LDLR caused a marked reduction in the urinary excretion of betaine and dimethylglycine, especially when the mice are fed a high-fat/cholesterol/cholate diet. Furthermore, as we demonstrate that these metabolic changes are comparable with those detected in ApoE knockout mice fed the same high-fat/cholesterol/cholate diet they may be useful for monitoring the onset of atherosclerosis across animal models
Driver Accelerator Design for the 10 kW Upgrade of the Jefferson Lab IR FEL
An upgrade of the Jefferson Lab IR FEL is now under construction. It will
provide 10 kW output light power in a wavelength range of 2-10 microns. The FEL
will be driven by a modest-sized 80-210 MeV, 10 mA energy-recovering
superconducting RF (SRF) linac. Stringent phase space requirements at the
wiggler, low beam energy, and high beam current subject the design to numerous
constraints. These are imposed by the need for both transverse and longitudinal
phase space management, the potential impact of collective phenomena (space
charge, wakefields, beam break-up (BBU), and coherent synchrotron radiation
(CSR)), and interactions between the FEL and the accelerator RF system. This
report addresses these issues and presents an accelerator design solution
meeting the requirements imposed by physical phenomena and operational
