    Bubble simulations with an interface tracking technique based on a partitioned fluid-structure interaction algorithm

    Numerical techniques frequently used for the simulation of one bubble can be classified as interface tracking techniques and interface capturing techniques. Most of these techniques calculate both the flow around the bubble and the shape of the interface between the gas and the liquid with one code. In this paper, a rising axisymmetric bubble is simulated with an interface tracking technique that uses separate codes to determine the position of the gas-liquid interface and to calculate the flow around the bubble. The grid converged results correspond well with experimental data. The gas-liquid interface is conceived as a zero-mass, zero-thickness structure whose position is determined by the liquid forces, a uniform gas pressure and surface tension. Iterations between the two codes are necessary to obtain the coupled solution of both problems and these iterations are stabilized with a fluid-structure interaction (FSI) algorithm. The flow around the bubble is calculated on a moving mesh in a reference frame that rises at the same speed as the bubble. The flow solver first updates the mesh throughout the liquid domain given a position of the gas-liquid interface and then calculates the flow around the bubble. It is considered as a black box with the position of the gas-liquid interface as input and the liquid forces on the interface as output. During the iterations, a reduced-order model of the flow solver is generated from the inputs and outputs of the solver. The solver that calculates the interface position uses this model to adapt the liquid forces on the gas-liquid interface during the calculation of the interface position

    Stability of a coupling technique for partitioned solvers in FSI applications

    This paper focuses on the stability of the coupling iterations in the partitioned approach to fluid-structure interaction. Previous research has shown that the number of coupling iterations increases when the time step decreases or when the structure becomes more flexible which is explained here by Fourier error analysis of the unsteady, incompressible flow in an elastic tube. Substituting a linearized model of the structural solver into the flow solver makes the coupling more stable but is impracticable if the flow solver is a black box. Therefore the coupling iterations are stabilized by coupling with reduced-order models and Aitken underrelaxation. (C) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved

    Nuclear RIPK3 and MLKL contribute to cytosolic necrosome formation and necroptosis

    Necroptotic signaling converges in the assembly of a cytosolic signaling platform, the necrosome, with the activation of its downstream effector, MLKL. RIPK1 and RIPK3, key components of the necrosome, act as signaling intermediates for the activation of MLKL. We report that RIPK3 and MLKL continuously shuttle between the nucleus and the cytoplasm, whereas RIPK1 is constitutively present in both compartments. During TNF-induced necroptosis, nuclear RIPK1 becomes ubiquitinated, after which nuclear MLKL becomes phosphorylated and oligomerized. Pharmacological inhibition of the nuclear export machinery leads to retention of RIPK3 and MLKL in the nucleus, prevents the nucleation of cytosolic RIPK3/MLKL oligomerization, and reduces cell death. Our results suggest that passage of necroptotic signaling components through the nucleus is a mechanism for regulating cytosolic necrosome formation and consequently necroptotic cell death
