    Web 2.0 Projects at Warwick University Library

    About 2 years ago at Warwick our senior managers encouraged Academic Support staff to really explore web 2.0 technologies and find out if anything particularly lent itself to supporting library work or marketing. We were given free reign to find out what worked and what suited the library, and what didn’t. The following brief overviews cover only four of the projects that have been running since then. We have also investigated much more, including Twitter, Google Documents, wiki reading lists, You-Tube and more, but we couldn’t possibly fit it all in here. The brief articles below are just to give a taste of the kind of projects we have worked on. There are many more members of staff involved and many more web 2.0 adventures underway..

    Lifting classes for the fixed point theory of nn-valued maps

    The theory of lifting classes and the Reidemeister number of single-valued maps of a finite polyhedron XX is extended to nn-valued maps by replacing liftings to universal covering spaces by liftings with codomain an orbit configuration space, a structure recently introduced by Xicot\'encatl. The liftings of an nn-valued map ff split into self-maps of the universal covering space of XX that we call lift-factors. An equivalence relation is defined on the lift-factors of ff and the number of equivalence classes is the Reidemeister number of ff. The fixed point classes of ff are the projections of the fixed point sets of the lift-factors and are the same as those of Schirmer. An equivalence relation is defined on the fundamental group of XX such that the number of equivalence classes equals the Reidemeister number. We prove that if XX is a manifold of dimension at least three, then algebraically the orbit configuration space approach is the same as one utilizing the universal covering space. The Jiang subgroup is extended to nn-valued maps as a subgroup of the group of covering transformations of the orbit configuration space and used to find conditions under which the Nielsen number of an nn-valued map equals its Reidemeister number. If an nn-valued map splits into nn single-valued maps, then its nn-valued Reidemeister number is the sum of their Reidemeister numbers.Comment: near complete rewrite from previous versio

    StrathSat-R : Deploying inflatable CubeSat structures in micro gravity

    This paper presents the concepts, objectives and design of a student-led sounding rocket experiment which shall test novel inflatable devices in space conditions. This experiment is envisaged as the first step towards developing a CubeSat programme at the University of Strathclyde, which can exploit the novel concepts developed and the technical skills gained. The experiment itself aims to test novel, student developed, inflatable space structures in micro gravity and reduced pressure conditions. It consists of three distinct sections, the ejection housing on the rocket and the two ejectable modules that are based on CubeSat architecture. Shortly before reaching apogee, the two modules are ejected from the rocket and will deploy their own inflating structure during free flight. After landing, the ejectable modules recovery will rely upon a GPS position relayed to the team from the module by Globalstar transmission and a RF beacon for tracking with the recovery helicopter. The two modules carry two different structures resulting in distinct mission objectives: The aim of FRODO is to deploy an experimental passive de-orbiting system for high altitude spacecraft which will in the future utilise solar radiation pressure for orbit removal. The aim of SAM is to serve as a technology demonstrator for the residual air deployment method of a smart bio-inspired space structure.     A Censored Multinomial Regression Model for Perinatal Mother to Child Transmission of HIV

    In studies designed to estimate rates of perinatal mother to child transmission of HIV, HIV assays are scheduled at multiple points in time. Still infection status for some infants at some time points is often unknown, particularly when interim analyses are conducted. Logistic regression and Cox proportional hazards regression are commonly used to estimate covariate-adjusted transmission rates, but their methods for handling missing data may be inadequate. Here, we propose using censored multinomial regression models to estimate cumulative and conditional rates of HIV transmission. Through simulation, we show that the proposed methods perform better than standard logistic models in terms of bias, mean squared error, coverage probability, and power, under a range of treatment effect and visit process scenarios

After studying the Akin house documents, materials, and narratives, I chose to focus my unit on the land and the people who came before the Akin family so that students will learn the long-view of our rich New England history
