Critical Access Hospitals and Retail Activity: an Empirical Analysis

    Get PDF
This paper takes an empirical approach to determining the effect that a critical access hospital (CAH) has on local retail activity. Previous research on the relationship between hospitals and economic development has primarily focused on single-case, multiplier oriented analysis. The positive empirical results provide additional evidence on the far-reaching economic development impacts of CAHs. The results also emphasize the importance of continued support for these rural institutions, including federal and state subsidies.Critical Access Hospital, retail, economic impact, Community/Rural/Urban Development, Health Economics and Policy, R11, I18,

Unveiling process knowledge for plasmid DNA fermentation across upstream scales

    Get PDF
Plasmids DNA (pDNA) are small, circular pieces of DNA used to deliver genetic information and are key inputs in gene therapies, cell therapies, gene editing, and in particular mRNA vaccines and therapies. There are currently ~1,400 therapeutic assets in development across these modalities, with the pipeline expected to grow rapidly in the next years given the pandemic scenario. Developing biopharmaceuticals derived from microbial fermentation such as pDNA relies upon performant bioreactors to allow a rapid scale up to commercial batches. For this it is relevant to minimize any possible risks while developing a process that adheres to industry quality standards. The choice of a well characterized system plays an important role from R&D through to production stages in accelerating development timelines and ensuring process success. The aim of this poster is to provide evidence to demonstrate the advantages of a microbial process developed using Sartorius scalable microbial solutions, DoE software and analytical methods for pDNA production. The purpose of this study is to identify the characteristics of entrepreneurial communities in rural Oklahoma. Both quantitative and qualitative research will be utilized. The Oklahoma Social Indicator Survey of 2006 and community-specific characteristics will be utilized to determine if the community offers services and resources utilized by entrepreneurs. Case studies from selected successful rural communities will offer insight on how a community as a whole behaves as an entrepreneur and provides resources utilized by entrepreneurs. This research has indicated that various communities in Oklahoma possess characteristics of entrepreneurial communities. The survey indicated there are small business owners who utilize many of the services and resources available. The survey also indicated that many small businesses were unaware of services already provided. The quantitative portion of this research indicated key services and resources that communities can provide for their entrepreneurs.Department of Agricultural Economic
