An overview of shed ice impact in the NASA Lewis Icing Research Tunnel
One of the areas of active research in commercial and military rotorcraft is directed toward developing the capability of sustained flight in icing conditions. The emphasis to date has been on the accretion and subsequent shedding of ice in an icing environment, where the shedding may be natural or induced. Historically, shed-ice particles have been a problem for aircraft, particularly rotorcraft. Because of the high particle velocities involved, damage to a fuselage or other airframe component from a shed-ice impact can be significant. Design rules for damage tolerance from shed-ice impact are not well developed because of a lack of experimental data. Thus, NASA Lewis (LeRC) has begun an effort to develop a database of impact force and energy resulting from shed ice. This effort consisted of a test of NASA LeRC's Model Rotor Test Rig (MRTR) in the Icing Research Tunnel (IRT). Both natural shedding and forced shedding were investigated. Forced shedding was achieved by fitting the rotor blades with Small Tube Pneumatic (STP) deicer boots manufactured by BF Goodrich. A detailed description of the test is given as well as the design of a new impact sensor which measures the force-time history of an impacting ice fragment. A brief discussion of the procedure to infer impact energy from a force-time trace are required for the impact-energy calculations. Recommendations and future plans for this research area are also provided
Model rotor icing tests in the NASA Lewis icing research tunnel
Tests of a lightly instrumented two-bladed teetering rotor and a heavily instrumented sub-scale articulated main rotor were conducted in the NASA Lewis Research Center Icing Research Tunnel (IRT) in August 1988 and September and November 1989. The first was an OH-58 tail rotor which had a diameter of 1.575 m and a blade chord of 0.133 m, and was mounted on a NASA designed test rig. The second, a four bladed articulated rotor, had a diameter of 1.83 m with 0.124 m chord blades specially fabricated for the experiment. This rotor was mounted on a Sikorsky Aircraft Powered Force Model, which enclosed a rotor balance and other measurement systems. The models were exposed to variations in temperature, liquid water content, and medium droplet diameter, and were operated over ranges of advance ratio, shaft angle, tip Mach number (rotor speed), and weight coefficient to determine the effect of these parameters on ice accretion. In addition to strain gage and balance data, the test was documented with still, video, and high speed photography, ice profile tracing, and ice molds. Presented here are the sensitivity of the model rotors to the test parameters and a comparison of the results to theoretical predictions

The four-bladed main rotor had a diameter of 1.83 m (6.00 ft) and the 0.124 m (4.9 in) chord rotor blades were specially fabricated for this experiment. The instrumented rotor was mounted on a Sikorsky Aircraft Powered Force Model, which enclosed a rotor balance and other measurement systems. The model rotor was exposed to a range of icing conditions that included variations in temperature, liquid water content, and median droplet diameter, and was operated over ranges of advance ratio, shaft angle, tip Mach number (rotor speed) and weight coefficient to determine the effect of these parameters on ice accretion. In addition to strain gage and balance data, the test was documented with still, video, and high speed photography, ice profile tracings, and ice molds. The sensitivity of the model rotor to the test parameters, is given, and the result to theoretical predictions are compared. Test data quality was excellent, and ice accretion prediction methods and rotor performance prediction methods (using published icing lift and drag relationships) reproduced the performance trends observed in the test. Adjustments to the correlation coefficients to improve the level of correlation are suggested
Harnessing Single Cell Sorting to Identify Cell Division Genes and Regulators in Bacteria
Cell division is an essential cellular process that requires an array of known and unknown proteins for its spatial and temporal regulation. Here we develop a novel, high-throughput screening method for the identification of bacterial cell division genes and regulators. The method combines the over-expression of a shotgun genomic expression library to perturb the cell division process with high-throughput flow cytometry sorting to screen many thousands of clones. Using this approach, we recovered clones with a filamentous morphology for the model bacterium, Escherichia coli. Genetic analysis revealed that our screen identified both known cell division genes, and genes that have not previously been identified to be involved in cell division. This novel screening strategy is applicable to a wide range of organisms, including pathogenic bacteria, where cell division genes and regulators are attractive drug targets for antibiotic development. © 2013 Burke et al
The influence of exercise environment and gender on mood and exertion
This study examined the influence of exercise environment and gender on post-exercise mood and exertion. College student participants (55 females, 49 males) were instructed to pedal a stationary bike at a moderate pace for 20 minutes. Participants were randomly assigned to one of three laboratory conditions: (1) exercising in front of a mirror and posters showing ideal fit body types (i.e., celebrity male and female personal trainers), (2) exercising in front of a mirror only, or (3) a control condition in which participants exercised without a mirror or posters. The Activation- Deactivation Adjective Check List (AD-ACL), measuring exercise-induced mood states, was administered both before and after exercise. Average bike speed throughout the exercise session measured exertion. Mirrors and posters of ideally fit celebrities did interact with gender on postexercise tension in that women felt most tense after exercising in front of the mirror and posters while men were most tense after exercising in front of the mirror only. Exercise exertion was also impacted by experimental condition such that participants rode significantly faster in the mirror and posters condition. There was no significant interaction of gender and condition on exercise exertion, but women pedaled fastest in the mirror and poster condition relative to the other conditions. Results suggest that exercise exertion and tension reduction are partially a by-product of gender and exercise environment
Testbeam studies of pre-prototype silicon strip sensors for the LHCb UT upgrade project
The LHCb experiment is preparing for a major upgrade in 2018-2019. One of the
key components in the upgrade is a new silicon tracker situated upstream of the
analysis magnet of the experiment. The Upstream Tracker (UT) will consist of
four planes of silicon strip detectors, with each plane covering an area of
about 2 m. An important consideration of these detectors is their
performance after they have been exposed to a large radiation dose. In this
article we present test beam results of pre-prototype n-in-p and p-in-n sensors
that have been irradiated with fluences up to

The Galaxy Luminosity Function and Luminosity Density at Redshift z=0.1
Using a catalog of 147,986 galaxy redshifts and fluxes from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), we measure the galaxy luminosity density at z = 0.1 in five optical bandpasses corresponding to the SDSS bandpasses shifted to match their rest-frame shape at z = 0.1. We denote the bands (0.1)u, (0.1)g, (0.1)r, (0.1)i, (0.1)z with lambda(eff) = (3216; 4240; 5595; 6792; 8111 Angstrom), respectively. To estimate the luminosity function, we use a maximum likelihood method that allows for a general form for the shape of the luminosity function,fits for simple luminosity and number evolution, incorporates the flux uncertainties, and accounts for the flux limits of the survey. We find luminosity densities at z = 0.1 expressed in absolute AB magnitudes in a Mpc(3) to be (-14.10 +/- 0.15, -15.18 +/- 0.03, - 15.90 +/- 0.03, -16.24 +/- 0.03, -16.56 +/- 0.02) in ((0.1)u, (0.1)g, (0.1)r, (0.1)i, (0.1)z), respectively, for a cosmological model with Omega(0) = 0.3, Omega(Lambda) = 0.7, and h = 1 and using SDSS Petrosian magnitudes. Similar results are obtained using Sersic model magnitudes, suggesting that flux from outside the Petrosian apertures is not a major correction. In the (0.1)r band, the best-fit Schechter function to our results has phi* = (1.49 +/- 0.04) x 10(-2) h(3) Mpc(-3), M-* - 5 log(10) h = - 20.44 +/- 0.01, and alpha = - 1.05 +/- 0.01. In solar luminosities, the luminosity density in (0.1)r is (1.84 +/- 0.04) x 10(8) h L-0.1r,L-. Mpc(-3). Our results in the (0.1)g band are consistent with other estimates of the luminosity density, from the Two-Degree Field Galaxy Redshift Survey and the Millennium Galaxy Catalog. They represent a substantial change ( similar to 0.5 mag) from earlier SDSS luminosity density results based on commissioning data, almost entirely because of the inclusion of evolution in the luminosity function model

Extinction times in the subcritical stochastic SIS logistic epidemic
Many real epidemics of an infectious disease are not straightforwardly super-
or sub-critical, and the understanding of epidemic models that exhibit such
complexity has been identified as a priority for theoretical work. We provide
insights into the near-critical regime by considering the stochastic SIS
logistic epidemic, a well-known birth-and-death chain used to model the spread
of an epidemic within a population of a given size . We study the behaviour
of the process as the population size tends to infinity. Our results cover
the entire subcritical regime, including the "barely subcritical" regime, where
the recovery rate exceeds the infection rate by an amount that tends to 0 as but more slowly than . We derive precise asymptotics for
the distribution of the extinction time and the total number of cases
throughout the subcritical regime, give a detailed description of the course of
the epidemic, and compare to numerical results for a range of parameter values.
We hypothesise that features of the course of the epidemic will be seen in a
wide class of other epidemic models, and we use real data to provide some
