    Lattice and superexchange effects in doped CMR manganites

    We report on the influence of the lattice degrees of freedom on charge, orbital and spin correlations in colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) manganites. For the weakly doped compounds we demonstrate that the electron-phonon coupling promotes the trapping of charge carriers, the disappearance of the orbital polaron pattern and the breakdown of ferromagnetism at the CMR transition.     Traditional work in belief revision deals with the question of what an agent should believe upon receiving new information. We will give an overview about what can be concluded about an agent based on an observation of its belief revision behaviour. The observation contains partial information about the revision inputs received by the agent and its beliefs upon receiving them. We will sketch a method for reasoning about past and future beliefs of the agent and predicting which inputs it accepts and rejects. The focus of this talk will be on different degrees of incompleteness of the observation and variants of the general question we are able to deal with

    The Mechanical Strength of Malosma laurina Leaves Corresponds with Survivability During Extreme Drought

    With the recent extreme drought that Southern California is facing, many plants’ survivability adaptations have proven insufficient. The Malosma laurina plant is known for it’s incredible ability to survive through droughts and wildfires with it’s adaptations of resprouts regeneration and it’s roots that can reach a depth of 40 feet to gather deep ground waters. We theorized that the mechanical strength of the leaves directly relates to its survivability during droughts. To explore this theory we took focused our theory specifically on M. laurina resprouts. With two groups, one fully alive and one dying, we took six samples from six plants within each group, for a total of twelve total plants and seventy-two leaf samples. We predicted that the alive plants, that are able to endure the drought, will have a higher mechanical strength due to the water filled cells within the leaf. We expected our results to conclude that plants that are healthier and better hydrated shall have a greater mechanical strength than those of poorer health and lower hydration

    Four-dimensional light shaping: manipulating ultrafast spatio-temporal foci in space and time

    Spectral dispersion of ultrashort pulses allows simultaneous focusing of light in both space and time creating so-called spatio-temporal foci. Such space-time coupling may be combined with existing holographic techniques to give a further dimension of control when generating focal light fields. It is shown that a phase-only hologram placed in the pupil plane of an objective and illuminated by a spatially chirped ultrashort pulse can be used to generate three dimensional arrays of spatio-temporally focused spots. Exploiting the pulse front tilt generated at focus when applying simultaneous spatial and temporal focusing (SSTF), it is possible to overlap neighbouring foci in time to create a smooth intensity distribution. The resulting light field displays a high level of axial confinement, with experimental demonstrations given through two-photon microscopy and non-linear laser fabrication of glass

    Comparison of mini-channel condensation heat transfer for R513A and R134a

    There is increased interest in emerging, low global warming potential (GWP) refrigerants due to With tthe phase out of hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) refrigerants (e.g., R134a); and the need for lower global warming potential (GWP) replacements, there are many questions that still need to be answered about replacement refrigerants, including heat transfer performance. One promising alternative to R134a (GWP = 1300) is R513A (GWP = 573), which is a non-flammable mixture comprised of 44% R134a and 56% R1234yf by weight. While this low GWPR513A refrigerant is attractive due to its lower GWP and A1 flammability rating, heat transfer data are limited. Condensation experiments were conducted for R134a and R513A in a vapor compression loop using multiport (i.e., 9 parallel channels) extruded aluminum tubes; each channel’s hydraulic diameter was 0.72 mm. Experiments covered a range of average qualities (e.g., 0.2 \u3c x \u3c 0.8) and mass fluxes (e.g., 300 \u3c G \u3c 500 kg/m2s). Heat transfer coefficients and pressure drops are reported. The heat transfer coefficients of R513A were found to be very similar to R134a. Condensation data weare compared to the condensation heat transfer coefficient correlations developed by Shah (2009) and Kim and Mudawar (2013). The MAE of the Shah correlation for R513A was 22% and 6.5% for the Kim and Mudawar (2013) correlation for R513A

As interior designers, it is our obligation to be knowledgeable of how our designs, and therefore the construction, impact the environment around us. Cuyahoga Valley National Park is underdeveloped for a reason, and this section of nature should be preserved. The proposed Cuyahoga Valley Resource and Development Center will be located just outside of the national park boundaries and utilize sustainable design practices and principles. It will serve as a museum and educational resource for the surrounding community to learn more about The Valley

    Towards a taxonomy of personality facets

    We describe three studies that together provide a first approximation to a comprehensive taxonomy of unique personality facets. In Study 1, we semantically sorted, removed synonyms, and factor analysed 1772 personality items taken from seven major omnibus personality inventories and four narrow inventories. Study 1 identified 61 base facets. In Study 2, we conducted a systematic review of the literature to identify facets missing from the 61 base facets. We identified 16 novel facets. We then created standardised, open access items for the 77 facets. In Study 3, we administered the items to a novel sample ( N = 1096) and assessed the psychometric properties of the facets. The ultimate result was 70 personality facet scales that are open access, psychometrically robust, unidimensional, and discriminant. We call this inventory the Facet-level Multidimensional Assessment of Personality or Facet MAP, version 1. The Facet MAP contains scales equivalent to almost all scales present in major personality inventories, and in most cases, many more as well. As the Facet MAP develops, we hope it will eventually provide a comprehensive taxonomy of personality facets, which will prove useful in reducing construct proliferation and facilitating numerous avenues of important personality research.
