Modulational instability in binary spin-orbit-coupled Bose-Einstein condensates

We study modulation instability (MI) of flat states in two-component spin-orbit-coupled (SOC) Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) in the framework of coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations for two components of the pseudospinor wave function. The analysis is performed for equal densities of the components. Effects of the interaction parameters, Rabi coupling, and SOC on the MI are investigated. In particular, the results demonstrate that the SOC strongly alters the commonly known MI (immiscibility) condition, $g_{12} > g_{1} g_{2}$, for the binary superfluid with coefficients $g_{1,2}$ and $g_{12}$ of the intra- and interspecies repulsive interactions. In fact, the binary BEC is always subject to the MI under the action of the SOC, which implies that the ground state of the system is plausibly represented by a striped phase

Vortex nucleation in rotating Bose-Einstein condensates with density-dependent gauge potential

We study numerically the vortex dynamics and vortex-lattice formation in a rotating density-dependent Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC), characterized by the presence of nonlinear rotation. By varying the strength of nonlinear rotation in density-dependent BECs, we calculate the critical frequency, $\Omega_{\text{cr}}$, for vortex nucleation both in adiabatic and sudden external trap rotations. The nonlinear rotation modifies the extent of deformation experienced by the BEC due to the trap and shifts the $\Omega_{\text{cr}}$ values for vortex nucleation. The critical frequencies and thereby, the transition to vortex-lattices in an adiabatic rotation ramp, depend on conventional $\textit{s}$-wave scattering lengths through the strength of nonlinear rotation, $\mathit{C}$, such that $\Omega_{\text{cr}}(\mathit{C}>0) < \Omega_{\text{cr}}(\mathit{C}=0) < \Omega_{\text{cr}}(\mathit{C}<0)$. In an analogous manner, the critical ellipticity ($\epsilon_{\text{cr}}$) for vortex nucleation during an adiabatic introduction of trap ellipticity ($\epsilon$) depends on the nature of nonlinear rotation besides trap rotation frequency. The nonlinear rotation additionally affects the vortex-vortex interactions and the motion of the vortices through the condensate by altering the strength of Magnus force on them. The combined result of these nonlinear effects is the formation of the non-Abrikosov vortex-lattices and ring-vortex arrangements in the density-dependent BECs.Comment: 10 pages, 10 figures, Accepted for publication in PR

A study evaluating the awareness among general population towards common medical emergencies

Background: Basic life support has been found to be lifesaving in common medical emergencies. The level of awareness about emergency care in general population and the approach of the common people with regards to common medical emergencies is an important determinant of positive outcome.Methods: This study was conducted in 445 participants randomly selected from visitors of our outpatient department, to study the awareness in general public about the medical emergencies and basic life support skills.Results:  This study was conducted in 445 participants randomly selected from visitors of our outpatient department, to study the awareness in general public about the medical emergencies and basic life support skills.Conclusions: Awareness about common medical emergencies is low in general public and there is a need to devise strategies to improve this awareness

The study focused on the construction and validation of a problem-solving ability test. The test consists of 36 multiple choice items regarding numerical and reasoning ability tested on 810 students. The preliminary instrument consists of 46 multiple choice items was tested on 352 secondary school students. After the refinement of items using different procedures, 36 items were selected. The construction and development of the test was done by expert review, preliminary draft, item analysis, selection of items, preparation of final test, norms, validity, and reliability of the test. The Cranach’s (α) and split-half reliability of the test as found 0.909and 0.890 respectively with the intrinsic and criterion validity of the test was found to be 0.953and 0.781

Role of danazol in management of mastalgia: a tertiary care experience from North India

Background: Mastalgia is one of the most common complains, for which women consult their general practitioner. Majority of the patients presented with fear of cancer so patient education and availability of quality radiological and pathological services are crucial in the management of patients with mastalgia. This study is aimed to assess the efficacy of danazol on cyclical and non-cyclical mastalgia.Methods: The study was conducted at Sher-I-Kashmir institute of medical sciences (SKIMS), Srinagar between January 2018 to July 2019. All the patients with mastalgia between 19 to 45 years presenting to surgical OPD were considered eligible for the study. After standard triple assessment, all our patients received 100 mg of danazol twice a day for a period of 3 months. Data was collected and analyzed.Results: All the patients with mastalgia between 19 to 45 years presenting to surgical OPD were considered eligible for the study. 72% of our patients presented with cyclic mastalgias while as 28% had non cyclic symptoms. 89.65% of patients in cyclic group had responded to cap. Danazol 100 mg twice daily and 81.81% had shown improvement in non-cyclic group. 19 of our patients had side effects due to medications.14 of our patients developed recurrence after discontinuation of medication.Conclusions: Danazol is very effective in the management of both cyclical and non-cyclical mastalgias. However, cost of the drug and side effects limits its use. Further studies are needed to examine the long-term effectiveness and sustainability of the effects after stopping the treatment

Global disparities in surgeons’ workloads, academic engagement and rest periods: the on-calL shIft fOr geNEral SurgeonS (LIONESS) study

: The workload of general surgeons is multifaceted, encompassing not only surgical procedures but also a myriad of other responsibilities. From April to May 2023, we conducted a CHERRIES-compliant internet-based survey analyzing clinical practice, academic engagement, and post-on-call rest. The questionnaire featured six sections with 35 questions. Statistical analysis used Chi-square tests, ANOVA, and logistic regression (SPSS® v. 28). The survey received a total of 1.046 responses (65.4%). Over 78.0% of responders came from Europe, 65.1% came from a general surgery unit; 92.8% of European and 87.5% of North American respondents were involved in research, compared to 71.7% in Africa. Europe led in publishing research studies (6.6 ± 8.6 yearly). Teaching involvement was high in North America (100%) and Africa (91.7%). Surgeons reported an average of 6.7 ± 4.9 on-call shifts per month, with European and North American surgeons experiencing 6.5 ± 4.9 and 7.8 ± 4.1 on-calls monthly, respectively. African surgeons had the highest on-call frequency (8.7 ± 6.1). Post-on-call, only 35.1% of respondents received a day off. Europeans were most likely (40%) to have a day off, while African surgeons were least likely (6.7%). On the adjusted multivariable analysis HDI (Human Development Index) (aOR 1.993) hospital capacity &gt; 400 beds (aOR 2.423), working in a specialty surgery unit (aOR 2.087), and making the on-call in-house (aOR 5.446), significantly predicted the likelihood of having a day off after an on-call shift. Our study revealed critical insights into the disparities in workload, access to research, and professional opportunities for surgeons across different continents, underscored by the HDI
