    ROSAT All-Sky Survey observations of IRAS galaxies; I. Soft X-ray and far-infrared properties

    The 120,000 X-ray sources detected in the RASS II processing of the ROSAT All-Sky Survey are correlated with the 14,315 IRAS galaxies selected from the IRAS Point Source Catalogue: 372 IRAS galaxies show X-ray emission within a distance of 100 arcsec from the infrared position. By inspecting the structure of the X-ray emission in overlays on optical images we quantify the likelihood that the X-rays originate from the IRAS galaxy. For 197 objects the soft X-ray emission is very likely associated with the IRAS galaxy. Their soft X-ray properties are determined and compared with their far-infrared emission. X-ray contour plots overlaid on Palomar Digitized Sky Survey images are given for each of the 372 potential identifications.     Thermodynamics of black branes in asymptotically Lifshitz spacetimes

    Recently, a class of gravitational backgrounds in 3+1 dimensions have been proposed as holographic duals to a Lifshitz theory describing critical phenomena in 2+1 dimensions with critical exponent z≥1z\geq 1. We continue our earlier work \cite{Bertoldi:2009vn}, exploring the thermodynamic properties of the "black brane" solutions with horizon topology R2\mathbb{R}^2. We find that the black branes satisfy the relation E=22+zTs\mathcal{E}=\frac{2}{2+z}Ts where E\mathcal{E} is the energy density, TT is the temperature, and ss is the entropy density. This matches the expected behavior for a 2+1 dimensional theory with a scaling symmetry (x1,x2)→λ(x1,x2)(x_1,x_2)\to \lambda (x_1,x_2), t→λztt\to \lambda^z t.Comment: 8 pages, references added and regroupe

    Spin-squeezing and Dicke state preparation by heterodyne measurement

    We investigate the quantum non-demolition (QND) measurement of an atomic population based on a heterodyne detection and show that the induced back-action allows to prepare both spin-squeezed and Dicke states. We use a wavevector formalism to describe the stochastic process of the measurement and the associated atomic evolution. Analytical formulas of the atomic distribution momenta are derived in the weak coupling regime both for short and long time behavior, and they are in good agreement with those obtained by a Monte-Carlo simulation. The experimental implementation of the proposed heterodyne detection scheme is discussed. The role played in the squeezing process by the spontaneous emission is considered

    Thermodynamics of Dyonic Lifshitz Black Holes

    Black holes with asymptotic anisotropic scaling are conjectured to be gravity duals of condensed matter system close to quantum critical points with non-trivial dynamical exponent z at finite temperature. A holographic renormalization procedure is presented that allows thermodynamic potentials to be defined for objects with both electric and magnetic charge in such a way that standard thermodynamic relations hold. Black holes in asymptotic Lifshitz spacetimes can exhibit paramagnetic behavior at low temperature limit for certain values of the critical exponent z, whereas the behavior of AdS black holes is always diamagnetic.Comment: 26 pages, 4 figure

    Size determination of the Centaur Chariklo from millimeter-wavelength bolometer observations

    Using the Max-Planck Millimeter Bolometer Array (MAMBO) at the IRAM 30m telescope we detected emission at 250 GHz from the Centaur Chariklo (1997 CU26). The observed continuum flux density implies a photometric diameter of 273 km. The resulting geometric albedo is 0.055, somewhat higher than expected from a comparison with most of the other few Centaurs and cometary nuclei for which such data are available.Comment: 4 pages, 1 Postscript figure, to appear in Astronomy & Astrophysic
