Fossil trees, tree moulds and tree casts in the Palaeocene Mull Lava Field, NW Scotland: context, formation and implications for lava emplacement
Megafossils and macrofossils of terrestrial plants (trees, leaves, fruiting bodies, etc.) are found in sedimentary and pyroclastic units interbedded with lavas in many ancient lava fields worldwide, attesting to subaerial environments of eruption and the establishment of viable plant communities during periods of volcanic quiescence. Preservation within lava is relatively rare and generally confined to the more robust woody tissues of trees, which are then revealed in the form of charcoal, mineralised tissue or as trace fossil moulds (tree moulds) and casts of igneous rock (tree casts, s.s.).
In this contribution, we document several such fossil trees (s.l.), and the lavas with which they are associated, from the Palaeocene Mull Lava Field (MLF) on the Isle of Mull, NW Scotland. We present the first detailed geological account of a unique site within the Mull Plateau Lava Formation (MPLF) at Quinish in the north of the island and provide an appraisal of the famous upright fossil tree â MacCulloch's Tree â remotely located on the Ardmeanach Peninsula on the west coast of the island, and another large upright tree (the Carsaig Tree) near Malcolm's Point in the district of Brolass, SW Mull; both occurring within the earlier Staffa Lava Formation (SLF). The taphonomy of these megafossils, along with palynological and lithofacies assessments of associated strata, allows speculation of likely taxonomic affinity and the duration of hiatuses supporting the establishment of forest/woodland communities. The Ardmeanach and Carsaig specimens, because of their size and preservation as upright (? in situ) casts enveloped by spectacularly columnar-jointed basaltic lava, appear to be unique. The aspect of these trees, the thickness of the enveloping lavas and the arrangement of cooling joints adjacent to the trees, implies rapid emplacement, ponding and slow, static cooling of voluminous and highly fluid basaltic magma. The specimens from Quinish include two prostrate casts and several prostrate moulds that collectively have a preferred orientation, aligning approximately perpendicular to that of the regional Mull Dyke Swarm, the putative fissure source of the lavas, suggesting local palaeo-flow was directed towards the WSW. The Quinish Lava is an excellent example of a classic pÄhoehoe (compound-braided) type, preserving some of the best examples of surface and internal features so far noted from the Hebridean Igneous Province (HIP) lava fields.
These Mull megafossils are some of the oldest recorded examples, remarkably well preserved, and form a significant feature of the island's geotourism industry
We Know it\u27s Service, But What are They Learning? Preservice Teachers\u27 Understandings of Diversity
A great deal of research on multiculturalism looks at different approaches to multicultural education and visions of multicultural teaching and learning. Though some research theorizes about how preservice teachers might learn about race or gender, there is very little work that helps teacher educators understand what learning about diversity more broadly, might look like. This study uses the conceptual framework developed by Paine to raise questions about and illuminate differences in the learning outcomes of preservice teachers who participated in two similar yet notably different service-learning experiences. Through examinations of writing tasks we find that teacher learning did indeed depend on the opportunities to learn provided by service-learning placements. Service-learning experiences that facilitated non-traditional power dynamics, engaged out-of-school contexts, and connected to teaching pedagogy were associated with more complex understandings of diversity. We suggest that attention to the relationships between service experiences and learning will help us better manage service learning limitations, better understand the impact of service-learning, and better understand the opportunities to learn inherent in such activities
Absolute Proper Motion of the Fornax Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxy from Photographic and HST WFPC2 Data
We have measured the absolute proper motion of the Fornax dwarf spheroidal
galaxy from a combination of photographic plate material and HST WFPC2 data
that provide a time baseline of up to 50 years. The extragalactic reference
frame consists of 8 QSO images and 48 galaxies. The absolute proper motion is
mu_alpha cos(delta) = 0.59 +-0.16 mas/yr and mu_delta = -0.15 +- 0.16 mas/yr.
The corresponding orbit of Fornax is polar, with an eccentricity of 0.27, and a
radial period of 4.5 Gyr. Fornax's current location is near pericenter. The
direction of the motion of Fornax supports the notion that Fornax belongs to
the Fornax-LeoI-LeoII-Sculptor-Sextans stream as hypothesized by Lynden-Bell
(1976, 1982) and Majewski (1994).
According to our orbit determination, Fornax crossed the Magellanic plane
\~190 Myr ago, a time that coincides with the termination of the star-formation
process in Fornax. We propose that ram-pressure stripping due to the passage of
Fornax through a gaseous medium denser than the typical intragalactic medium
left behind from the LMC may have caused the end of star formation in Fornax.
The excess, anomalous clouds within the South Galactic pole region of the
Magellanic Stream whose origin has long been debated in the literature as
constituents of either the Magellanic Stream or of the extragalactic Sculptor
group, are found to lie along the orbit of Fornax. We speculate that these
clouds are stripped material from Fornax as the dwarf crossed the Magellanic

Genetic Variation and Antioxidant Response Gene Expression in the Bronchial Airway Epithelium of Smokers at Risk for Lung Cancer
Prior microarray studies of smokers at high risk for lung cancer have demonstrated that heterogeneity in bronchial airway epithelial cell gene expression response to smoking can serve as an early diagnostic biomarker for lung cancer. As a first step in applying functional genomic analysis to population studies, we have examined the relationship between gene expression variation and genetic variation in a central molecular pathway (NRF2-mediated antioxidant response) associated with smoking exposure and lung cancer. We assessed global gene expression in histologically normal airway epithelial cells obtained at bronchoscopy from smokers who developed lung cancer (SC, n=20), smokers without lung cancer (SNC, n=24), and never smokers (NS, n=8). Functional enrichment analysis showed that the NRF2-mediated, antioxidant response element (ARE)-regulated genes, were significantly lower in SC, when compared with expression levels in SNC. Importantly, we found that the expression of MAFG (a binding partner of NRF2) was correlated with the expression of ARE genes, suggesting MAFG levels may limit target gene induction. Bioinformatically we identified single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in putative ARE genes and to test the impact of genetic variation, we genotyped these putative regulatory SNPs and other tag SNPs in selected NRF2 pathway genes. Sequencing MAFG locus, we identified 30 novel SNPs and two were associated with either gene expression or lung cancer status among smokers. This work demonstrates an analysis approach that integrates bioinformatics pathway and transcription factor binding site analysis with genotype, gene expression and disease status to identify SNPs that may be associated with individual differences in gene expression and/or cancer status in smokers. The Effect of Substructure on Mass Estimates of Galaxies
Large galaxies are thought to form hierarchically, from the accretion and
disruption of many smaller galaxies. Such a scenario should naturally lead to
galactic phase-space distributions containing some degree of substructure. We
examine the errors in mass estimates of galaxies and their dark halos made
using the projected phase-space distribution of a tracer population (such as a
globular cluster system or planetary nebulae) due to falsely assuming that the
tracers are distributed randomly. The level of this uncertainty is assessed by
applying a standard mass estimator to samples drawn from 11 random realizations
of galaxy halos containing levels of substructure consistent with current
models of structure formation. We find that substructure will distort our mass
estimates by up to ~20% - a negligible error compared to statistical and
measurement errors in current derivations of masses for our own and other
galaxies. However, this represents a fundamental limit to the accuracy of any
future mass estimates made under the assumption that the tracer population is
distributed randomly, regardless of the size of the sample or the accuracy of

Clouds Toward the Virgo Cluster Periphery: Gas-rich Optically Inert Galaxies
Aperture synthesis observations of two HI cloud complexes located in the
periphery of the Virgo galaxy cluster are presented. These low HI-mass clouds
( 10) are seen projected on the M region of the western Virgo
cluster, where the galaxy population is thought to lie behind the main A
cluster surrounding M87. The kinematic measurements of both unresolved Arecibo
and resolved VLA-C observations are in good agreement. The HI detections cannot
be identified with any optical, IR, or UV emission from available archival
imaging. They are inert at these wavelengths. The HI masses of the individual
VLA detections range from 7.28 log( 7.85. The total
dynamical mass estimates are several times their HI content, ranging from 7.00
log( 9.07, with the assumption that the clouds are
self-gravitating and in dynamical equilibrium. We report the observed
parameters derived from the VLA observations. One of these HI clouds appears to
be the most isolated optically inert detection observed in the outer reaches of

Essential prescribing tips for GP Associates-in-Training
Prescribing is an essential role in general practice but it is also, at times, a high risk activity. GP Associates-in-Training (GP AiTs) have been highlighted as needing further support to reduce the risk of prescribing errors. This article highlights some common prescribing errors to help GP AiTs to review their prescribing and develop prescribing habits to avoid errors. The general practice workforce is changing and there are more pharmacists working in general practice. This article describes the role of clinical pharmacists in prescribing safety and in supporting GP AiTs
The Age, Extinction and Distance of the Old, Metal-Rich Open Cluster NGC 6791
An extensive grid of metal-rich isochrones utilizing the latest available
input physics has been calculated for comparison with the old, metal-rich open
cluster NGC 6791. The isochrones have been simultaneously fit to BV and VI
color magnitude diagrams, with the same composition, reddening and distance
modulus required for both colors. Our best fitting isochrone assumes [Fe/H] =
+0.4, scaled solar abundance ratios, and dY/dZ = 2 (Y = 0.31), yielding an
excellent fit to the data at all points along the major sequences. The
resulting age is 8 Gyr, with E(B-V) = 0.10 and (m-M)_v = 13.42. The derived
cluster parameters are fairly robust to variations in the isochrone [Fe/H] and
helium abundances. All of the acceptable fits indicate that 0.07 < E(B-V) <
0.14$, 13.29 < (m-M)_v < 13.46, and that NGC 6791 has an age of 8.0+/- 0.5 Gyr.
The fits also suggest that dY/dZ lies between 1 and 3. A metallicity as low as
solar is clearly ruled out, as is dY/dZ = 0. Comparison with previous isochrone
studies indicates that the derived reddening is primarily due to our use of the
most recent color transformations, whereas the age depends upon both the colors
and the input physics. Our isochrones provide an excellent fit to the Hyades
zero-age main sequence as determined by Hipparcos, providing evidence that our
derived reddening and distance modulus are reliable.Comment: 37 pages, 13 figures, to appear in A
