Probing new physics mechanisms in neutrinoless double-beta decay with SNO+
PhDIn this thesis, I present the theory of neutrinoless double-beta decay (0 2 ),
particularly the theory of exotic modes of 0 2 involving the emission of
one or two Majorons. Alongside this, I summarise the most recent results
in the experimental search for 0 2 , including limits on the rate of these
exotic processes. I describe the SNO+ experiment and it’s physics goals,
which include the search for 0 2 . As part of the SNO+ collaboration, I
have made a signi cant contribution towards the development of the data
quality software that is essential for ensuring SNO+ can achieve its physics
goals—including in 0 2 searches. I describe how I developed a software
package that performs the high-level data quality checks.
Continuing with the software theme, I then describe a python-based
limit-setting and tting software package called echidna. I have been a lead
developer of echidna as part of my PhD, so I describe the software in detail
and how it can be used to set limits on 0 2 signals. By reproducing the
sensitivity results of the KamLAND-Zen experiment, in four key Majoronemitting
0 2 modes, I verify the use of echidna as a limit-setting tool
for this type of search. Finally, I present the results of a comprehensive
sensitivity study, where I determine the potential sensitivity of SNO+ to the
same set of Majoron-emitting modes that KamLAND-Zen and other 0 2
experiments have already investigated
P1_8 Muonic Atoms
Muonic atoms are atoms where electrons are replaced with negatively charged muons. This paper analyses the implications of muonic hydrogenic atoms compared to standard hydrogenic atoms. It was found that energy levels in muonic hydrogen are increased by a factor of 186, whilst the Bohr radius is 186 times smaller. The spectra associated with Hydrogen are also significantly altered
P1_3 Speed Limit
To be able to go faster than anyone else is a dream held by many people, including the Vesco family, who set the current land speed record for a wheel-driven vehicle in their car The Turbinator. By considering the balance of drive force and drag force on an ideal track, this paper estimates the theoretical top speed of The Turbinator. Then by analysing the new power output of their modified engine, the possibility of exceeding 500 mph was explored
P1_10 Delta-V Requirements of Spaceflight
The paper calculates the delta-V requirements to launch a spacecraft into Low Earth Orbit and execute Hohmann transfers to the International Space Station orbit and Geosynchronous Orbit. These were found to be 8.03 kms-1, 0.12 kms-1 and 3.94 kms-1, respectively. The paper also includes researched values for the delta-V requirements to travel to the Moon and Phobos. The paper aims to highlight the fact that delta-V requirements for manoeuvres beyond Low Earth Orbit are considerably lower than achieving Low Earth Orbit.Ă‚
P1_6 Paper Planes - Long-Haul Flight
This article analyses key factors in the design of a paper aeroplane and its flight dynamics that result in large flight times. The theoretical maximum height of the flight is found to be 33 m and the lift coefficient is estimated as 0.06 (s^2)/m. The key factors for extended flight are maximum wing area, high launch speed and minimum paper weight
P1_1 Could Bruce Willis Save the World?
The film Armageddon (1998) puts forward the possibility of using a nuclear weapon buried deep within an Earth-bound asteroid to split the asteroid in two, each half clearing opposite sides of the Earth with only relatively minor damage. This article investigates the feasibility of such a plan and shows that even using the largest nuclear weapon made to date, the bomb comes over 9 orders of magnitude short of the yield required
P1_9 Can You Get Into Space for Peanuts?
Developing low cost space travel is a key issue since the retirement of the Shuttle. This paper looks at the feasibility of a mixture of toffee and peanuts in a low cost solid fuel rocket. It is found that this fuel mixture would lead to a mass ratio of about 54 which corresponds to a rocket consisting of 98% fuel and 2% remaining for the rocket structure and payload
P1_7 Medical Nanobot Locomotion Methods within a Fluid
The following paper discusses the motion and mechanisms behind the motion of a nanoscale robot within a fluid and compares it to that of a larger object moving through the same fluid by considering the impeding forces to motion that the nanobot has to overcome. The fluid considered is water and it is found that the apparent viscosity of a fluid is highly dependent on the length scale of the object attempting to move through it with a nanoscale object experiencing a much larger viscosity compared to a macro scale object in the same fluid
