The use of perfluoroether lubricants in unprotected space environments
A series of ball bearing tests in simulated space environment are described which determine durability of perfluoroether lubricants. The results of the examination of the test bearings for each stage are described and experimental techniques designed to overcome lubricant degradation are outlined
Determination of hydroxyl content in impure magnesium oxide
Three-step thermal process quantitatively determines the hydroxyl content in samples of magnesium oxide. Analytical method can be adapted to large-scale production of hydroxyl-free magnesium oxide
The NBER Patent Citation Data File: Lessons, Insights and Methodological Tools
This paper describes the database on U.S. patents that we have developed over the past decade, with the goal of making it widely accessible for research. We present main trends in U. S. patenting over the last 30 years, including a variety of original measures constructed with citation data, such as backward and forward citation lags, indices of 'originality' and 'generality', self-citations, etc. Many of these measures exhibit interesting differences across the six main technological categories that we have developed (comprising Computers and Communications, Drugs and Medical, Electrical and Electronics, Chemical, Mechanical and Others), differences that call for further research. To stimulate such research, the entire database about 3 million patents and 16 million citations is now available on the NBER website. We discuss key issues that arise in the use of patent citations data, and suggest ways of addressing them. In particular, significant changes over time in the rate of patenting and in the number of citations made, as well as the inevitable truncation of the data, make it very hard to use the raw number of citations received by different patents directly in a meaningful way. To remedy this problem we suggest two alternative approaches: the fixed-effects approach involves scaling citations by the average citation count for a group of patents to which the patent of interest belongs; the quasi-structural approach attempts to distinguish the multiple effects on citation rates via econometric estimation.
Closed-form sums for some perturbation series involving associated Laguerre polynomials
Infinite series sum_{n=1}^infty {(alpha/2)_n / (n n!)}_1F_1(-n, gamma, x^2),
where_1F_1(-n, gamma, x^2)={n!_(gamma)_n}L_n^(gamma-1)(x^2), appear in the
first-order perturbation correction for the wavefunction of the generalized
spiked harmonic oscillator Hamiltonian H = -d^2/dx^2 + B x^2 + A/x^2 +
lambda/x^alpha 0 0, A >= 0. It is proved that the
series is convergent for all x > 0 and 2 gamma > alpha, where gamma = 1 +
(1/2)sqrt(1+4A). Closed-form sums are presented for these series for the cases
alpha = 2, 4, and 6. A general formula for finding the sum for alpha/2 = 2 + m,
m = 0,1,2, ..., in terms of associated Laguerre polynomials, is also provided.Comment: 16 page
Semirelativistic stability of N-boson systems bound by 1/r pair potentials
We analyze a system of self-gravitating identical bosons by means of a
semirelativistic Hamiltonian comprising the relativistic kinetic energies of
the involved particles and added (instantaneous) Newtonian gravitational pair
potentials. With the help of an improved lower bound to the bottom of the
spectrum of this Hamiltonian, we are able to enlarge the known region for
relativistic stability for such boson systems against gravitational collapse
and to sharpen the predictions for their maximum stable mass.Comment: 11 pages, considerably enlarged introduction and motivation,

Coulomb plus power-law potentials in quantum mechanics
We study the discrete spectrum of the Hamiltonian H = -Delta + V(r) for the
Coulomb plus power-law potential V(r)=-1/r+ beta sgn(q)r^q, where beta > 0, q >
-2 and q \ne 0. We show by envelope theory that the discrete eigenvalues
E_{n\ell} of H may be approximated by the semiclassical expression
E_{n\ell}(q) \approx min_{r>0}\{1/r^2-1/(mu r)+ sgn(q) beta(nu r)^q}.
Values of mu and nu are prescribed which yield upper and lower bounds.
Accurate upper bounds are also obtained by use of a trial function of the form,
psi(r)= r^{\ell+1}e^{-(xr)^{q}}. We give detailed results for
V(r) = -1/r + beta r^q, q = 0.5, 1, 2 for n=1, \ell=0,1,2, along with
comparison eigenvalues found by direct numerical methods.Comment: 11 pages, 3 figure
Anomalous Hall Effect in three ferromagnets: EuFe4Sb12, Yb14MnSb11, and Eu8Ga16Ge30
The Hall resistivity (Rho_xy), resistivity (Rho_xx), and magnetization of
three metallic ferromagnets are investigated as a function of magnetic field
and temperature. The three ferromagnets, EuFe4Sb12 (Tc = 84 K), Yb14MnSb11 (Tc
= 53 K), and Eu8Ga16Ge30 (Tc = 36 K) are Zintl compounds with carrier
concentrations between 1 x 10^21 cm^-3 and 3.5 x 10^21 cm^-3. The relative
decrease in Rho_xx below Tc [Rho_xx(Tc)/Rho_xx(2 K)] is 28, 6.5, and 1.3 for
EuFe4Sb12, Yb14MnSb11, and Eu8Ga16Ge30 respectively. The low carrier
concentrations coupled with low magnetic anisotropies allow a relatively clean
separation between the anomalous (Rho_'xy), and normal contributions to the
measured Hall resistivity. For each compound the anomalous contribution in the
zero field limit is fit to alpha Rho_xx + sigma_xy rho_xx^2 for temperatures T
< Tc. The anomalous Hall conductivity, sigma_xy, is -220 +- 5 (Ohm^-1 cm^-1),
-14.7 +- 1 (Ohm^-1 cm^-1), and 28 +- 3 (Ohm^-1 cm^-1) for EuFe4Sb12,
Yb14MnSb11, and Eu8Ga16Ge30 respectively and is independent of temperature for
T < Tc if the change in spontaneous magnetization (order parameter) with
temperature is taken into account. These data are consistent with recent
theories of the anomalous Hall effect that suggest that even for stochiometric
ferromagnetic crystals, such as those studied in this article, the intrinsic
Hall conductivity is finite at T = 0, and is a ground state property that can
be calculated from the electronic structure.Comment: 22 pages, 13 figures Submitted to PR
Comparison of Material Properties and Microstructure of Specimens Built Using the 3D Systems Vanguard HS and Vanguard HiQ+HSSLS Systems
The HiQ upgrade to the 3D Systems Vanguard selective laser sintering (SLS) machine incorporates a revised thermal calibration system and new control software. The paper compares
the tensile modulus, tensile strength, elongation at break, flexural modulus, Izod impact resistance and microstructure of two batteries of standard specimens built from recycled Duraform
PA (Nylon 12). The first set is built on a Vanguard HS system and the second on the same
system with the HiQ upgrade installed. The upgrade reduces user intervention, decreases total build time and improves surface finish. However, using the default processing parameters,
tensile, flexure and impact properties are all found to decline after the upgrade is installed.Mechanical Engineerin
Coherent states on spheres
We describe a family of coherent states and an associated resolution of the
identity for a quantum particle whose classical configuration space is the
d-dimensional sphere S^d. The coherent states are labeled by points in the
associated phase space T*(S^d). These coherent states are NOT of Perelomov type
but rather are constructed as the eigenvectors of suitably defined annihilation
operators. We describe as well the Segal-Bargmann representation for the
system, the associated unitary Segal-Bargmann transform, and a natural
inversion formula. Although many of these results are in principle special
cases of the results of B. Hall and M. Stenzel, we give here a substantially
different description based on ideas of T. Thiemann and of K. Kowalski and J.
Rembielinski. All of these results can be generalized to a system whose
configuration space is an arbitrary compact symmetric space. We focus on the
sphere case in order to be able to carry out the calculations in a
self-contained and explicit way.Comment: Revised version. Submitted to J. Mathematical Physic
