Evidence for new unidentified TeV gamma-ray sources from angularly-correlated hot-spots observed by independent TeV gamma-ray sky surveys
We have examined the directional cross-correlation of statistical `hot-spots'
between a Northern Sky TeV Gamma Ray Survey by the Milagro Observatory and a
similar survey by the Tibet Array. We find the directions of these hot-spots
are angularly uncorrelated between the two surveys for large angular
separations (Delta theta > 4 degrees), but there appears to be a statistically
significant correlation between hot-spot directions for Delta theta < 1.5
degrees. Independent simulations indicate the chance probability for the
occurrence of this correlation is approximately 10^-4, implying the existence
of one or more previously unobserved TeV gamma-ray sources in these directions.
The data sets are consistent with both point-like sources or diffuse sources

A proposal is made for inclusion of a very wide field camera onboard Spacelab. Its scientific program is outlined: detection and photometry, spectrography, and star and starlike object photography. The optics, receptor, and mechanical structure are described. Scientific and technical constraints are discussed, and a development plan is detailed. The dust contamination of Spacelab using the camera was also studied
Brane world models need low string scale
Models with large extra dimensions offer the possibility of the Planck scale being of order the electroweak scale, thus alleviating the gauge hierarchy problem. We show that these models suffer from a breakdown of unitarity at around three quarters of the low effective Planck scale. An obvious candidate to fix the unitarity problem is string theory. We therefore argue that it is necessary for the string scale to appear below the effective Planck scale and that the first signature of such models would be string resonances. We further translate experimental bounds on the string scale into bounds on the effective Planck scale
Rotational Feshbach Resonances in Ultracold Molecular Collisions
In collisions at ultralow temperatures, molecules will possess Feshbach
resonances, foreign to ultracold atoms, whose virtual excited states consist of
rotations of the molecules. We estimate the mean spacing and mean widths of
these resonant states, exploiting the fact the molecular collisions at low
energy display chaotic motion. As examples, we consider the experimentally
relevant molecules O_2, OH, and PbO. The density of s-wave resonant states for
these species is quite high, implying that a large number of narrow resonant

Determination of Ground Water Associated with Lignite Mining in Arid Climate,
Ground water and surface water create a range of problems in lignite mining utilizing surface mining methods. In order to create a safe and economic mining environment, it is essential to carry out mining after dewatering the rock mass surrounding the lignite mines by advance dewatering techniques. This paper briefly describes the ground water regimes including pressure gradients associated with various lignite deposits together with the practical examples of some important lignite deposits in the world. An effective method of controlling ground water in multi-aquifer environment in lignite deposits is to carry out rock mass dewatering using borehole pumps. This approach will help reducing the inflow rates of ground water to the mining excavation and also increase the effective strength of the overburden strata, thus, increasing the slope stability of the mining excavations. The main theme of this paper is to present a case history analysis of Thar lignite deposit in Sindh, Pakistan which has lignite reserves of some 193 billion tonnes. The paper presents a proposed method of dewatering the Thar prospect together with an assessment of the quality of aquifer water which can be used to improve the quality of life of people inhabiting in the Thar Desert area of Sindh, Pakistan.
Water samples from three aquifers were collected from nine different locations and were analyzed in the laboratory for evaluating their physical and chemical characteristics. The test results indicated that the aquifer water can be classified as (sodium+ potassium) -chloride type water with a TDS range of 1000 to 20,000 mg/L. Consequently, this ground water is classified as brackish (saline water) requiring treatment before it can be utilised for domestic or industrial consumptions. It should be noted that this ground water does not contain heavy metals and toxic metals including arsenic, mercury and lead or cyanide. However, results indicate that groundwater from a few locations contained traces of silver (<4oppb) Owithozinc0<0.1ppm
A quantum mechanical model of the upper bounds of the cascading contribution to the second hyperpolarizability
Microscopic cascading of second-order nonlinearities between two molecules
has been proposed to yield an enhanced third-order molecular nonlinear-optical
response. In this contribution, we investigate the two-molecule cascaded second
hyperpolarizability and show that it will never exceed the fundamental limit of
a single molecule with the same number of electrons as the two-molecule system.
We show the apparent divergence behavior of the cascading contribution to the
second hyperpolarizability vanishes when properly taking into account the
intermolecular interactions. Although cascading can never lead to a larger
nonlinear-optical response than a single molecule, it provides alternative
molecular design configurations for creating materials with large third-order
susceptibilities that may be difficult to design into a single molecule.Comment: 13 pages, 9 figures, 1 tabl
Ex vivo renal perfusion and autotransplantation in treatment of calculous disease or abdominal aortic aneurysm.
Two more indications are described for temporary ex vivo perfusion of kidneys with revascularization of these organs as autografts to orthotopic or heterotopic locations. One of the patients had staghorn calculi which were removed from a solitary kidney. The other patient had both kidneys autografted in the course of a surgical procedure on an extensive abdominal aortic aneurysm
