Exploring the impact of the ‘RUEU?’ game on Greek students’ perceptions of and attitudes to European identity

European identity is a complex, multi-faced and inherently imprecise concept relating to a range of socio-political and psychological factors. Addressing this topic in educational practice, particularly with respect to Higher Education students, constitutes a complex and open problem for research. This paper reports on an experimental study designed to explore the effectiveness of the educational game “RUEU?” in supporting university students in understanding the key socio-political issues regarding European identity. Quantitative data regarding Greek university students’ (N = 92) attitudes to European identity, before and after playing the game, were collected. Students’ performance of the game group (N = 46) was compared with that of a control group (N = 46) who explored the same issues about European identity through a tutor-guided discussion. The findings showed that both instructional interventions were effective but in different ways. The participants in the game-based group appeared more attached to the EU after the intervention and moved toward a more balanced description of their Greek and European identity. On the other hand, the students in the control group rated higher what “European identity” and being EU citizen means to them. The findings indicated the potential of game-based interventions to deliver not only academic content but also to promote students’ reflection and influence them at an attitudinal and emotional level

TWO-STEP LASER OPTOGALVANIC SPECTROSCOPY OF SR: EVEN PARITY 4DNL AUTOIONIZATIONRYDBERG STATES WITH J=0-5

OF RECENT YEARS THE SPECTROSCOPY OF AUTOIONIZING STATES IS OF PARTICULAR INTEREST FOR UNDERSTANDING MUCH ABOUT THE EXISTING INTERACTIONS IN THIS ENERGY REGION. ALKALINE EARTHS ARE VERY APPROPRIATE FOR SUCH STUDIES, SINCE THEY HAVE TWO ELECTRONS OUTSIDE CLOSED SHELLS AND THE EXCITATION OF AUTOIONIZING STATES IS POSSIBLE WITH THE VARIOUS LASER TECHNIQUES, USING LIGHT IN THE VISIBLE-UV RANGE. THE OPTOGALVANIC SPECTROSCOPY IS A VERY SENSITIVE AND EFFICIENT TECHNIQUE WHICH HAS BEEN EXTENSIVELY APPLIED TO THE STUDY OF ATOMIC RYDBERG STATES. MOREOVER, STARTING FROM METASTABLE STATES WHICH ARE WELL POPULATED THROUGH THE DISCHARGE, THIS TECHNIQUE OFFERS THE ADVANTAGE THAT WE CAN INVESTIGATE HIGHLY EXCITED STATES, WITH HIGH ANGULAR MOMENTUM J, USING ONLY TWO EASILY AVAILABLE LASER WAVELENGTHS. IN THIS THESIS WE REPORT ON THE OBSERVATION OF THE EVEN PARITY, J=0-5, 4DNL AUTOIONIZING RYDBERG STATES OF STRONTIUM (SR), USING A TWO-STEP LASER OPTOGALVANIC SPECTROSCOPY. FROM THE 4D5S 3D1,2,3, METASTABLES, POPULATED BY A D.C. GLOW DISCHARGE IN A SR HEATED CELL, WE EXCITE IN THE FIRST STEP THE 4D5P 3D0,1,2, 1F3 AND 3F4 INTERMEDIATE STATES AND IN THE SECOND THE 4DND AND 4DNG, J=0-5, ONES. WE GIVE THE ENERGIES AND THE ELECTRONIC CONFIGURATION OF - 560 NEW AUTOIONIZING STATES BETWEEN THE IONIZATION LIMITS 5S AND 4D AND THE SPECTRAL CHARACTERISTICS OF THE CORRESPONDING TRANSITIONS ALSO.ΤΑ ΤΕΛΕΥΤΑΙΑ ΧΡΟΝΙΑ Η ΦΑΣΜΑΤΟΣΚΟΠΙΑ ΤΩΝ ΚΑΤΑΣΤΑΣΕΩΝ ΑΥΤΟΙΟΝΙΣΜΟΥ ΠΑΡΟΥΣΙΑΖΕΙ ΙΔΙΑΙΤΕΡΟ ΕΝΔΙΑΦΕΡΟΝ ΓΙΑ ΤΗΝ ΚΑΤΑΝΟΗΣΗ ΤΩΝ ΔΙΑΦΟΡΩΝ ΑΛΛΗΛΕΠΙΔΡΑΣΕΩΝ, ΠΟΥ ΕΜΦΑΝΙΖΟΝΤΑΙ Σ'ΑΥΤΗ ΤΗΝ ΕΝΕΡΓΕΙΑΚΗ ΠΕΡΙΟΧΗ. Towards the development of a framework for promoting best practice in virtual campuses

    No full text
International audienceDespite a significant growth in the development of virtual campuses (VCs) across the EU in recent years, the findings from a European Commission DG Education and Culture workshop in 2005 on VCs highlighted a number of concerns relating to VC projects and initiatives across the EU. It was felt that many VCs suffered from a low profile resulting in little support at senior levels, thus hampering their development, as well as having very little contact and interoperability with each other. If eLearning and VC initiatives are to be sustainable within the European Union, then it is vital that stakeholders understand how new models of teaching and learning transform the institution and how they can be used to enhance the flexibility and inclusiveness of the European education system. This paper reports on the work of a European Commission DG Education and Culture co-financed project PBP-VC Promoting Best Practice in Virtual Campuses which is aimed at providing a deeper understanding of the key issues and critical success factors underlying the implementation of VCs. The paper will outline a tentative model of issues underpinning best practice in VCs derived from an initial literature based investigation of existing VC initiatives within Europe. In addition, the project is working towards developing a practical framework to help guide the process of creating best practice in VCs, as well as raising awareness of issues and approaches to creating sustainable VCs
