On the Use and Abuse of Nietzsche for Marketing Communication: Examining Consumer Suspicion toward Advertising

    Get PDF
This study examines increasing consumer suspicion in light of contemporary marketing praxis. Immanuel Kant\u27s concept of self-inflicted intellectual immaturity is traced throughout 20th century marketing literature. A review of the public relations practices of Edward Bernays reveals a close similarity to recent concepts of integrated marketing communication (Schultz). This project contrasts marketing communication approaches grounded in mass psychology with the rational choice model of consumer behavior. These dualistic viewpoints are often regarded as mutually exclusive; however, this author proposes an integrated dualism of marketing communication to provide consumers with ways to redeem rhetorical tokens (Mayhew) that constitute the managerial rhetoric (Sproule) of advertising. Integrated dualism constitutes an economic as well as ethical response to the multiplicity of the postmodern marketplace

Arcs and Ovals in the Hermitian and Ree Unitals

The hermitian unitals U(q) and the Ree unitals RU(q) are examined for the existence of ovals and arcs. It is shown that U(q) does not have ovals for q > 2 and that RU(q), like U(q), is embedded in a much larger design with block intersections of cardinality ⩽ 2. Arcs of size 3q + 1 are constructed for the Ree unitals RU(q); they are ovals only in the case q = 3. In this case, U(3) and RU(3) are embedded in the same design and its automorphism group, the symplectic group Sp(6, 2), contains the automorphism groups of both the unitals; the coding-theoretic aspects are elucidated

Magnetic Properties of the low dimensional spin system (VO)2_2P2_2O7_{7}: ESR and susceptibility

Experimental results on magnetic resonance (ESR) and magnetic susceptibility are given for single crystalline (VO)2_2P2_2O7_{7}. The crystal growth procedure is briefly discussed. The susceptibility is interpreted numerically using a model with alternating spin chains. We determine JJ=51 K and δ\delta=0.2. Furthermore we find a spin gap of ≈6\approx 6meV from our ESR measurements. Using elastic constants no indication of a phase transition forcing the dimerization is seen below 300 K.Comment: 7 pages, REVTEX, 7 figure
