    ANALYZING STUDENT WRITING: A COMPREHENSIVE STUDY OF SOCIOLINGUISTICS, SYNTAX, AND VOCABULARY

    This study presents a comprehensive analysis of an English analytical exposition text written by Indonesian students on "The Dangers of Smoking." By evaluating the text using three key criteria – Sociolinguistics, Syntax, and Vocabulary – the researchers aim to explore the students' ability to utilize language in social contexts, their understanding of sentence structure, and their proficiency in using suitable words to convey their arguments effectively. Through a qualitative approach, the researchers conducted a meticulous assessment of the text, revealing the students' adeptness in incorporating societal implications, utilizing logical sequencing, and employing persuasive language. The findings of this study offer valuable insights into students' written capabilities and provide guidance for future pedagogical interventions in fostering linguistic development among learners. &nbsp

    Implementing genre based approach and scientific approach in teaching writing simple descriptive text to investigate their effect on the students’ writing achievement at SMP 3 Palangka Raya

    The main purpose of the research was to compare two approaches, namely Genre Based Approach and Scientific Approach in the eighth grade class of SMP 3 Palangka Raya. The population of this research consisted of one class with the total number of 25 students. The design used in this research was quasi-experimental design. The sample was determined using cluster sampling technique. The technique for collecting the data used tests and documentation. The research was undergone by giving a set of essay instruction to write simple descriptive text. The mean score of these two groups of students then were compared to obtain the objective of the research. The finding showed the mean scores of the students who were taught using Genre Based Approach was 73.24 and the students who were taught using Scientific Approach was 66.125 based on the result of hypothesis test calculation, it was found that value of t_observed was greater than the value of t_table at 5% and at 1% the level of significance or 2.01 2.68. It means that Ha was accepted and Ho was rejected. It means that students taught using Genre Based Approach had better achievement in writing simple descriptive text than those taught with Scientific Approach

    The Use of Android-Based Mobile Learning Application to Comprehend Local-Based Descriptive Text

    The rapid development of technology today has greatly helped facilitate human affairs in all aspects of life, including the activities of reading. Reading is important to penetrate the world window. Through reading, knowledge and information needed can be obtained. In this era of technological advances, a shift in students' reading interest can be made through the world of the internet. This research aims to obtain a detailed description of the use of Android-based mobile learning applications in teaching reading local-based descriptive texts for SMP students. This research used descriptive-qualitative method with online interviews, observation and documentation as the research instruments. Data analysis was done based on the theory of Miles and Hubberman (1992). The result shows that in this crucial situation of pandemic Covid 19 the Android-based mobile learning applications support the online teaching and learning process of reading. The local-based descriptive text teaching materials are provided in the form of an android application of Descriptive Text. In addition, the teacher also explains the learning objectives and the steps for learning local-based descriptive texts using the Android-based mobile learning application

    THE ANALYSIS OF DIFFICULTIES IN WRITING NARRATIVE TEXT

    The objective of this research was to analyze the difficulties in writing narrative text faced by the ninth grade students of SMP Negeri 11 Palangka Raya in the academic year 2018/2019 in using the generic structure and language features of the text. The research involved 20 students as the research participants. The method used in this research was descriptive research in which the research described and explained the actual data by conducting a writing test and analyzing the results. The results showed that 40% of the participants faced some difficulties in constructing the generic structure of the texts i.e. they failed in completing the generic structures of the texts and, mostly, missed one of the parts. Furthermore, there were 50% of the participants faced some difficulties in using the language features of narrative text, such as using past tenses, nouns, pronouns, verbal processes, and direct speech

    DEVELOPING ENGLISH MULTIMEDIA BASED TEACHING MEDIA BY USING MICROSOFT POWER POINT

    The purpose of this R&D was to develop an English multimedia based teaching media by using Microsoft power point as the demand of 2013 curriculum in the utilization of the ICT in the teaching learning process. The product of this research was interactive media with two different topics. The subject of this research was the tenth grade students of SMAN 1 Kuala Pembuang in academic year 2018/2019. The objective of this research was how to develop English multimedia based teaching media by using Microsoft power point for tenth graders. This research was conducted by using Research and Development Method (R and D) where the product was created and tried out to the subject. The instruments of this research were questionnaire, interview, expert validation, and observation which were handed out to the students, teacher and the experts. The data collected were analyzed qualitatively. The result of the need assessment and the interview showed that both the teacher and students required multimedia based teaching media which are relevant to their need and interest and the demand of 2013 curriculum about the utilization of ICT. The data collected from observation showed that media developed was appropriate for teaching writing descriptive text

    Pelatihan Pra-Sertifikasi Bagi Guru Bahasa Inggris Untuk Menyusun Perangkat Penilaian Pembelajaran

    In general, the problem faced by English teachers participating in the Professional Teacher Education Program (PPG) is the inability to develop learning assessment tool. Therefore, the lecturer team from the English Education Study Program of FKIP University of Palangka Raya provided a solution to this problem. The solution provided was the training and mentoring to English language teachers in Kota Palangka Raya to increase their knowledge and skills in terms of preparing learning assessment tool. Training and mentoring were carried out through the community service activity by inviting seven English teachers who were not yet professionally certified as teacher. The result of the activity can be concluded as follows: (1) by intensive training on the basic concepts of constructing learning assessment tool it can increase the teachers’ knowledge to 100% achieved with an average score of ≥82,5 in the very good category; (b) by intensive mentoring activity in developing the design of learning assessment tool can increase the knowledge and skill of teachers to 100% achieved with an average score of ≥82,5 in the very good category as well; and (c) by mentoring activity the implementation of English learning assessment in each class was taught properly and correctly, in which it increased the teacher's knowledge and skill to 100% achieved with an average score of ≥82,5 in the very good category too. Thus, the training in preparing English learning assessment tool conducted for the English teachers of primary and secondary schools in Kota Palangka Raya gave significantly positive effect on teachers’ knowledge and ability in preparing English learning assessment tools.Secara umum permasalahan yang dihadapi para Guru Bahasa Inggris yang mengikuti Program Pendidikan Profesi Guru (PPG) adalah ketidakmampuan menyusun perangkat penilaian pembelajaran. Oleh karena itu, Tim Dosen dari Program Studi Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris FKIP Universitas Palangka Raya memberikan solusi atas permasalahan tersebut. Adapun solusi yang diberikan berupa pelatihan dan pendampingan kepada Guru Bahasa Inggris di Kota Palangkaraya untuk meningkatkan pengetahuan dan keterampilannya menyusun perangkat penilaian pembelajaran. Pelatihan dan pendampingan dilaksanakan melalui kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat kepada tujuh (7) Guru Bahasa Inggris yang belum bersertifikasi profesi. Dari hasil kegiatan pelatihan dan pendampingan dapat disimpulkan seperti berikut ini: (a) Melalui kegiatan pelatihan berupa pendalaman materi tentang konsep dasar penyusunan perangkat penilaian pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris dapat meningkatkan pengetahuan guru 100% tuntas dengan perolehan nilai rata-rata ≥82,5 berkategori sangat baik; (b) Melalui kegiatan pelatihan dan pendampingan mengembangkan desain perangkat penilaian pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris dapat meningkatkan pengetahuan dan keterampilan guru 100% tuntas dengan perolehan nilai rata-rata ≥82,5 berkategori sangat baik; dan (c) Melalui kegiatan pendampingan mengimplementasikan  penilaian pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris pada masing-masing kelas yang diampunya secara baik dan benar, sehingga dapat meningkatkan pengetahuan dan keterampilan guru 100% tuntas dengan perolehan nilai rata-rata ≥82,5 berkategori sangat baik. Dengan demikian, pelatihan penyusunan perangkat penilaian pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris yang dilakukan pada guru-guru SD, SMP dan SMA di Kota Palangka Raya memiliki pengaruh positif yang signifikan terhadap pengetahuan dan kemampuan mereka dalam menyusun perangkat penilaian pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris dengan sangat baik

    An Analysis of Students’ Difficulties in Writing Descriptive Texts in the Tenth Grade of SMA Kristen Palangka Raya

    Most students had problems writing a descriptive text when they were assigned their text. Many students were not able to describe themselves or they had difficulties in writing descriptive text. Some students think that writing is the most difficult skill in English. Some students also could not finish their writing at the end of the time set due to limited ideas and vocabulary. This research aimed to describe the students’ difficulties in writing descriptive texts and find out the causes underlining those frequent difficulties. This research uses the qualitative descriptive method.  The research subjects were X MIPA students of SMA Kristen Palangka Raya who had difficulties when writing descriptive text. This research involved 17 students as the research subjects. The data of this research were the results of students’ worksheets and the student's answers to the given questionnaires. The researcher employed a writing test and questionnaires to gain descriptive data. As a result, the factors that cause the students’ difficulties in writing descriptive text were students’ lack of vocabulary, difficulties to translate, and lack of competence in understanding English tenses

    TEACHING VOCABULARY BY USING FLASHCARD MEDIA AT THE FIFTH GRADE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

    The aims of this research is to describe the teaching vocabulary by using flash cards media at the five grade students of SDN Pasar lama 3 Banjarmasin. It is conducted to know how the implementation of flash cards on the teaching English media in vocabulary with using word flashcards and picture flash cards by the teacher. The researcher will teach in V B class. It is caused the teacher choose this class to the researcher. This class consist of 32 students. The research design is descriptive qualitative research. The result of research is found that the students’ problem in using word flashcard media in teaching and learning process in the classroom with 32 students. there are 10 students who get score 60 or average. They still have difficulty with using word flash cards. and the second observation, the teacher used picture flashcard media in teaching and learning process in the classroom with 32 students. The all students understand the meaning in the picture flashcard shown by the teacher. The teacher give students score is very good with 70 - 100 score because the students can pass the KKM (Kriteria Ketuntasan Minimal). Based on the result, the researcher suggested that the students should learn more about vocabulary with using flash cards. Keywords: flashcard, qualitative, vocabular
