THE DYNAMICS OF FEEDER CATTLE MARKET RESPONSES TO CORN PRICE CHANGE
A feeder-calf price model is estimated which incorporates elements of break-even budget analysis, including estimates of placement weights, slaughter weights, ration cost, and feed-conversion rates. From this model, a corn price multiplier is calculated which quantifies the corn/feeder-calf price relationship. Because the multiplier includes information on cattle weight, feed conversion, and ration cost, it also provides insight into how feeding programs are altered in response to corn price changes. Changes in feeding programs which occur in response to corn price changes are illustrated with dynamic simulation based on weight, ration cost, and price models presented here.corn, corn price multiplier, dynamic simulation, feeder cattle, Demand and Price Analysis,
The topology of deformation spaces of Kleinian groups
Let M be a compact, hyperbolizable 3-manifold with nonempty incompressible
boundary and let AH(\pi_1(M)) denote the space of (conjugacy classes of)
discrete faithful representations of \pi_1(M) into PSL 2 (C). The components of
the interior MP(\pi_1(M)) of AH(\pi_1(M)) (as a subset of the appropriate
representation variety) are enumerated by the space A(M) of marked
homeomorphism types of oriented, compact, irreducible 3-manifolds homotopy
equivalent to M. In this paper, we give a topological enumeration of the
components of the closure of MP(\pi_1(M)) and hence a conjectural topological
enumeration of the components of AH(\pi_1(M)). We do so by characterizing
exactly which changes of marked homeomorphism type can occur in the algebraic
limit of a sequence of isomorphic freely indecomposable Kleinian groups. We use
this enumeration to exhibit manifolds M for which AH(\pi_1(M)) has infinitely
many components.Comment: 49 pages, published versio
The Energy Transfer Process in Planetary Flybys
We illustrate the energy transfer during planetary flybys as a function of
time using a number of flight mission examples. The energy transfer process is
rather more complicated than a monotonic increase (or decrease) of energy with
time. It exhibits temporary maxima and minima with time which then partially
moderate before the asymptotic condition is obtained. The energy transfer to
angular momentum is exhibited by an approximate Jacobi constant for the system.
We demonstrate this with flybys that have shown unexplained behaviors: i) the
possible onset of the "Pioneer anomaly" with the gravity assist of Pioneer 11
by Saturn to hyperbolic orbit (as well as the Pioneer 10 hyperbolic gravity
assist by Jupiter) and ii) the Earth flyby anomalies of small increases in
energy {\it in the geocentric system} (Galileo-I, NEAR, and Rosetta, in
additioon discussing the Cassini and Messenger flybys). Perhaps some small, as
yet unrecognized effect in the energy-transfer process can shed light on these
anomalies.Comment: 29 pages, 43 images combined into 13 figures. Additions to answer
