Energy absorption and bending stiffness in CFRP laminates : the effect of 45º plies
The impact characteristics of cross-ply and angle-ply composite laminates were investigated, with an instrumented impact drop tester by performing gravity assisted drop tests on [0/90]6s and [0/45/90]4s laminates. The impact energy was kept constant at 12 J for all the tests. From the dynamic responses presented here as force history, energy history and force-displacement plots, relevant characteristics such as contact time, delamination load, absorbed energy, bending stiffness, after impact deflection etc were obtained. The plots were non-smooth, disclosing the salient features of the composites. It was important to note that the [0/45/90]4s was more resistant to impact bending, but incurred more damage as exhibited by its higher contact time and absorbed energy. The laminates were sectioned through the impact point and magnified macro and micro photographs were taken to show the failure modes, which include delamination, matrix cracking etc
"Quiet Food Sovereignty” as Food Sovereignty without Movements? Understanding Food Sovereignty in Post-Socialist Russia
What does food sovereignty look like in settings where rural social movements are weak or non-existent, such as in countries with post-socialist, semi-authoritarian regimes? Focusing on Russia, we present a divergent form of food sovereignty. Building on the concept of ‘quiet sustainability’, we present a dispersed, muted, but clearly bottom-up variant we term ‘quiet food sovereignty’. In the latter, the role of the very productive smallholdings is downplayed by the state and partly by the smallholders themselves. Those smallholdings are not seen as an alternative to industrial agriculture, but subsidiary to it (although superior in terms of sociality and healthy, environmentally friendly produce). As such, ‘quiet food sovereignty’ deviates from the overt struggle frequently associated with food sovereignty. We discuss the prospects of the ‘quiet food sovereignty’ to develop into a full food sovereignty movement, and stress the importance of studying implicit everyday forms of food sovereignty
Primary Sequences of Protein-Like Copolymers: Levy Flight Type Long Range Correlations
We consider the statistical properties of primary sequences of two-letter HP
copolymers (H for hydrophobic and P for polar) designed to have water soluble
globular conformations with H monomers shielded from water inside the shell of
P monomers. We show, both by computer simulations and by exact analytical
calculation, that for large globules and flexible polymers such sequences
exhibit long-range correlations which can be described by Levy-flight

M-Theory Moduli Space and Cosmology
We conduct a systematic search for a viable string/M-theory cosmology,
focusing on cosmologies that include an era of slow-roll inflation, after which
the moduli are stabilized and the Universe is in a state with an acceptably
small cosmological constant. We observe that the duality relations between
different cosmological backgrounds of string/M-theory moduli space are greatly
simplified, and that this simplification leads to a truncated moduli space
within which possible cosmological solutions lie. We review some known
challenges to four dimensional models in the "outer", perturbative, region of
moduli space, and use duality relations to extend them to models of all of the
(compactified) perturbative string theories and 11D supergravity, including
brane world models. We conclude that cosmologies restricted to the outer region
are not viable, and that the most likely region of moduli space in which to
find realistic cosmology is the "central", non-perturbative region, with
coupling and compact volume both of order unity, in string units.Comment: 42 pages, 3 figure
Effective interaction between helical bio-molecules
The effective interaction between two parallel strands of helical
bio-molecules, such as deoxyribose nucleic acids (DNA), is calculated using
computer simulations of the "primitive" model of electrolytes. In particular we
study a simple model for B-DNA incorporating explicitly its charge pattern as a
double-helix structure. The effective force and the effective torque exerted
onto the molecules depend on the central distance and on the relative
orientation. The contributions of nonlinear screening by monovalent counterions
to these forces and torques are analyzed and calculated for different salt
concentrations. As a result, we find that the sign of the force depends
sensitively on the relative orientation. For intermolecular distances smaller
than it can be both attractive and repulsive. Furthermore we report a
nonmonotonic behaviour of the effective force for increasing salt
concentration. Both features cannot be described within linear screening
theories. For large distances, on the other hand, the results agree with linear
screening theories provided the charge of the bio-molecules is suitably

de Sitter Vacua in String Theory
We outline the construction of metastable de Sitter vacua of type IIB string
theory. Our starting point is highly warped IIB compactifications with
nontrivial NS and RR three-form fluxes. By incorporating known corrections to
the superpotential from Euclidean D-brane instantons or gaugino condensation,
one can make models with all moduli fixed, yielding a supersymmetric AdS
vacuum. Inclusion of a small number of anti-D3 branes in the resulting warped
geometry allows one to uplift the AdS minimum and make it a metastable de
Sitter ground state. The lifetime of our metastable de Sitter vacua is much
greater than the cosmological timescale of 10^10 years. We also prove, under
certain conditions, that the lifetime of dS space in string theory will always

Outcome from balloon induced coronary artery dissection after intracoronary beta radiation
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the healing of balloon induced coronary artery
dissection in individuals who have received beta radiation treatment and
to propose a new intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) dissection score to
facilitate the comparison of dissection through time. DESIGN:
Retrospective study. SETTING: Tertiary referral centre. PATIENTS: 31
patients with stable angina pectoris, enrolled in the beta energy
restenosis trial (BERT-1.5), were included. After excluding those who
underwent stent implantation, the evaluable population was 22 patients.
INTERVENTIONS: Balloon angioplasty and intracoronary radiation followed by
quantitative coronary angiography (QCA) and IVUS. Repeat QCA and IVUS were
performed at six month follow up. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: QCA and IVUS
evidence of healing of dissection. Dissection classification for
angiography was by the National Heart Lung Blood Institute scale. IVUS
proven dissection was defined as partial or complete. The following IVUS
defined characteristics of dissection were described in the affected
coronary segments: length, depth, arc circumference, presence of flap, and
dissection score. Dissection was defined as healed when all features of
dissection had resolved. The calculated dose of radiation received by the
dissected area in those with healed versus non-healed dissection was also
compared. RESULTS: Angiography (type A = 5, B = 7, C = 4) and IVUS proven
(partial = 12, complete = 4) dissections were seen in 16 patients
following intervention. At six month follow up, six and eight unhealed
dissections were seen by angiography (A = 2, B = 4) and IVUS (partial = 7,
complete = 1), respectively. The mean IVUS dissection score was 5.2 (range
3-8) following the procedure, and 4.6 (range 3-7) at follow up. No
correlation was found between the dose prescribed in the treated area and
the presence of unhealed disse
de Sitter String Vacua from Supersymmetric D-terms
We propose a new mechanism for obtaining de Sitter vacua in type IIB string
theory compactified on (orientifolded) Calabi-Yau manifolds similar to those
recently studied by Kachru, Kallosh, Linde and Trivedi (KKLT). dS vacuum
appears in KKLT model after uplifting an AdS vacuum by adding an anti-D3-brane,
which explicitly breaks supersymmetry. We accomplish the same goal by adding
fluxes of gauge fields within the D7-branes, which induce a D-term potential in
the effective 4D action. In this way we obtain dS space as a spontaneously
broken vacuum from a purely supersymmetric 4D action. We argue that our
approach can be directly extended to heterotic string vacua, with the dilaton
potential obtained from a combination of gaugino condensation and the D-terms
generated by anomalous U(1) gauge groups.Comment: 17 pages, 1 figur
Refined histopathological predictors of BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutation status: A large-scale analysis of breast cancer characteristics from the BCAC, CIMBA, and ENIGMA consortia
Introduction: The distribution of histopathological features of invasive breast tumors in BRCA1 or BRCA2 germline mutation carriers differs from that of individuals with no known mutation. Histopathological features thus have utility for mutation prediction, including statistical modeling to assess pathogenicity of BRCA1 or BRCA2 variants of uncertain clinical significance. We analyzed large pathology datasets accrued by the Consortium of Investigators of Modifiers of BRCA1/2 (CIMBA) and the Breast Cancer Association Consortium (BCAC) to reassess histopathological predictors of BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutation status, and provide robust likelihood ratio (LR) estimates for statistical modeling. Methods: Selection criteria for study/center inclusion were estrogen receptor (ER) status or grade data available for invasive breast cancer diagnosed younger than 70 years.
