On-sky observations with an achromatic hybrid phase knife coronagraph in the visible
CONTEXT: The four-quadrant phase mask stellar coronagraph, introduced by D.
Rouan et al., is capable of achieving very high dynamical range imaging and was
studied in the context of the direct detection of extra-solar planets.
Achromatic four-quadrant phase mask is currently being developed for broadband
IR applications. AIMS: We report on laboratory and on-sky tests of a prototype
coronagraph in the visible. This prototype, the achromatic hybrid phase knife
coronagraph, was derived from the four-quadrant phase mask principle. METHODS:
The instrumental setup implementing the coronagraph itself was designed to
record the pre- and post-coronagraphic images simultaneously so that an
efficient real-time image selection procedure can be performed. We describe the
coronagraph and the associated tools that enable robust and repeatable
observations. We present an algorithm of image selection that has been tested
against the real on-sky data of the binary star HD80081 (* 38 Lyn). RESULTS
Although the observing conditions were poor, the efficiency of the proposed
method is proven. From this experiment, we derive procedures that can apply to
future focal instruments associating adaptive optics and coronagraphy,
targeting high dynamic range imaging in astronomy, such as detecting
extra-solar planets
Optimization of Apodized Pupil Lyot Coronagraph for ELTs
We study the optimization of the Apodized Pupil Lyot Coronagraph (APLC) in
the context of exoplanet imaging with ground-based telescopes. The APLC
combines an apodization in the pupil plane with a small Lyot mask in the focal
plane of the instrument. It has been intensively studied in the literature from
a theoretical point of view, and prototypes are currently being manufactured
for several projects. This analysis is focused on the case of Extremely Large
Telescopes, but is also relevant for other telescope designs.
We define a criterion to optimize the APLC with respect to telescope
characteristics like central obscuration, pupil shape, low order segment
aberrations and reflectivity as function of the APLC apodizer function and mask
diameter. Specifically, the method was applied to two possible designs of the
future European-Extremely Large Telescope (E-ELT).
Optimum configurations of the APLC were derived for different telescope
characteristics. We show that the optimum configuration is a stronger function
of central obscuration size than of other telescope parameters. We also show
that APLC performance is quite insensitive to the central obscuration ratio
when the APLC is operated in its optimum configuration, and demonstrate that
APLC optimization based on throughput alone is not appropriate.Comment: 9 pages, 17 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy &

Speckle Statistics in Adaptively Corrected Images
(abridged) Imaging observations are generally affected by a fluctuating
background of speckles, a particular problem when detecting faint stellar
companions at small angular separations. Knowing the distribution of the
speckle intensities at a given location in the image plane is important for
understanding the noise limits of companion detection. The speckle noise limit
in a long-exposure image is characterized by the intensity variance and the
speckle lifetime. In this paper we address the former quantity through the
distribution function of speckle intensity. Previous theoretical work has
predicted a form for this distribution function at a single location in the
image plane. We developed a fast readout mode to take short exposures of
stellar images corrected by adaptive optics at the ground-based UCO/Lick
Observatory, with integration times of 5 ms and a time between successive
frames of 14.5 ms ( m). These observations temporally
oversample and spatially Nyquist sample the observed speckle patterns. We show,
for various locations in the image plane, the observed distribution of speckle
intensities is consistent with the predicted form. Additionally, we demonstrate
a method by which and can be mapped over the image plane. As the
quantity is proportional to the PSF of the telescope free of random
atmospheric aberrations, this method can be used for PSF calibration and

Adaptive optics imaging of P Cygni in Halpha
We obtained Halpha diffraction limited data of the LBV star P Cyg using the
ONERA Adaptive Optics (AO) facility BOA at the OHP 1.52m telescope on October
1997. Taking P Cyg and the reference star 59 Cyg AO long exposures we find that
P Cyg clearly exhibits a large and diffuse intensity distribution compared to
the 59 Cyg's point-like source. A deconvolution of P Cyg using 59 Cyg as the
Point Spread Function was performed by means of the Richardson-Lucy algorithm.
P Cyg clearly appears as an unresolved star surrounded by a clumped envelope.
The reconstructed image of P Cyg is compared to similar spatial resolution maps
obtained from radio aperture synthesis imaging. We put independent constraints
on the physics of P Cyg which agree well with radio results. We discuss future
possibilities to constrain the wind structure of P Cyg by using
multi-resolution imaging, coronagraphy and long baseline interferometry to

Excisional treatment in women with cervical adenocarcinoma in situ (AIS): a prospective randomised controlled noninferiority trial to compare AIS persistence/recurrence after loop electrosurgical excision procedure with cold knife cone biopsy: protocol for a pilot study
Introduction: Adenocarcinoma in situ (AIS) of the uterine cervix is the precursor to invasive endocervical adenocarcinoma. An excisional biopsy such as a cold knife cone biopsy (CKC) should be performed to exclude invasive adenocarcinoma. Loop electrosurgical excision procedure (LEEP) is an alternative modality to CKC but is controversial in AIS. There is a perception that there is a greater likelihood of incomplete excision of AIS with LEEP because the depth of excised tissue tends to be smaller and the tissue margins may show thermal artefact which can interfere with pathology assessment. In the USA, guidelines recommend that any treatment modality can be used to excise AIS, provided that the specimen remains intact with interpretable margins. However, there are no high-quality studies comparing LEEP with CKC and well-designed prospective studies are needed. If such a study were to show that LEEP was non-inferior to CKC for the outcomes of post-treatment persistence, recurrence and adenocarcinoma, LEEP could be recommended as an appropriate treatment option for AIS in selected patients. This would benefit women because, unlike CKC, LEEP does not require general anaesthesia and may be associated with reduced morbidity.
Methods and analysis: The proposed exploratory study is a parallel group trial with an allocation ratio of 2:1 in favour of the intervention (LEEP: CKC). Participants are women aged ≥18 to ≤45 years diagnosed with AIS on cervical screening and/or colposcopically directed biopsy in Australia and New Zealand, who are to receive excisional treatment in a tertiary level centre.

Speckle noise and dynamic range in coronagraphic images
This paper is concerned with the theoretical properties of high contrast
coronagraphic images in the context of exoplanet searches. We derive and
analyze the statistical properties of the residual starlight in coronagraphic
images, and describe the effect of a coronagraph on the speckle and photon
noise. Current observations with coronagraphic instruments have shown that the
main limitations to high contrast imaging are due to residual quasi-static
speckles. We tackle this problem in this paper, and propose a generalization of
our statistical model to include the description of static, quasi-static and
fast residual atmospheric speckles. The results provide insight into the
effects on the dynamic range of wavefront control, coronagraphy, active speckle
reduction, and differential speckle calibration. The study is focused on
ground-based imaging with extreme adaptive optics, but the approach is general
enough to be applicable to space, with different parameters.Comment: 31 pages, 18 figure
Comparison of coronagraphs for high contrast imaging in the context of Extremely Large Telescopes
We compare coronagraph concepts and investigate their behavior and
suitability for planet finder projects with Extremely Large Telescopes (ELTs,
30-42 meters class telescopes). For this task, we analyze the impact of major
error sources that occur in a coronagraphic telescope (central obscuration,
secondary support, low-order segment aberrations, segment reflectivity
variations, pointing errors) for phase, amplitude and interferometric type
coronagraphs. This analysis is performed at two different levels of the
detection process: under residual phase left uncorrected by an eXtreme Adaptive
Optics system (XAO) for a large range of Strehl ratio and after a general and
simple model of speckle calibration, assuming common phase aberrations between
the XAO and the coronagraph (static phase aberrations of the instrument) and
non-common phase aberrations downstream of the coronagraph (differential
aberrations provided by the calibration unit). We derive critical parameters
that each concept will have to cope with by order of importance. We evidence
three coronagraph categories as function of the accessible angular separation
and proposed optimal one in each case. Most of the time amplitude concepts
appear more favorable and specifically, the Apodized Pupil Lyot Coronagraph

The Lyot Project Direct Imaging Survey of Substellar Companions: Statistical Analysis and Information from Nondetections
The Lyot project used an optimized Lyot coronagraph with Extreme Adaptive
Optics at the 3.63m Advanced Electro-Optical System telescope (AEOS) to observe
86 stars from 2004 to 2007. In this paper we give an overview of the survey
results and a statistical analysis of the observed nondetections around 58 of
our targets to place constraints on the population of substellar companions to
nearby stars. The observations did not detect any companion in the substellar
regime. Since null results can be as important as detections, we analyzed each
observation to determine the characteristics of the companions that can be
ruled out. For this purpose we use a Monte Carlo approach to produce artificial
companions, and determine their detectability by comparison with the
sensitivity curve for each star. All the non-detection results are combined
using a Bayesian approach and we provide upper limits on the population of
giant exoplanets and brown dwarfs for this sample of stars. Our nondetections
confirm the rarity of brown dwarfs around solar-like stars and we constrain the
frequency of massive substellar companions (M>40Mjup) at orbital separation
