    Wheat growth and phytoavailability of copper and zinc as affected by soil texture in saline-sodic conditions

    Nutrient disorders in saline-sodic soils can adversely affect crop growth. In order to evaluate the growth response of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) to Cu and Zn and the phytoavailability of these essential elements, a pot experiment was conducted in three different textured saline-sodic soils [sandy loam (SL), sandy clay loam (SCL) and clay (C)] having an ECe 8.63, 8.80, 8.98 dS m–1 and SAR 21.66, 23.48, 24.84 (mmol L–1)1/2 respectively. Seven treatments including levels of Cu (4, 6 and 8 mg kg–1) and levels of Zn (4, 6 and 8 mg kg–1) were separately applied together with a single control treatment. Dry matter yield (straw + grain) of wheat increased up to 35.2% with Cu and up to 31.2 % with Zn application relative to the control. As soil clay content increased, dry matter yield decreased up to 39.2% in SCL and up to 62.7% in C soil when compared to SL soil. Application of Cu increased the concentration in both wheat straw and grains up to 2.46 and 2.20 mg kg–1 DW respectively relative to the control. Zinc concentration in wheat straw and grains was also increased up to 29.97 and 29.40 mg kg–1 DW respectively relative to the controls.     A Physically Based Analytical Modeling of Threshold Voltage Control for Fully-Depleted SOI Double Gate NMOS-PMOS Flexible-FET

    In this work, we propose an explicit analytical equation to show the variation of top gate threshold voltage with respect to the JFET bottom gate voltage for a Flexible Threshold Voltage Field Effect Transistor (Flexible-FET) by solving 2-D Poisson's equation with appropriate boundary conditions, incorporating Young's parabolic approximation. The proposed model illustrates excellent match with the experimental results for both n-channel and p-channel 180nm Flexible-FETs. Threshold voltage variation with several important device parameters (oxide and silicon channel thickness, doping concentration) is observed which yields qualitative matching with results obtained from SILVACO simulations.Comment: 4 pages, EIT 2012-IUPUI conferenc

    Self Consistent Simulation of C-V Characterization and Ballistic Performance of Double Gate SOI Flexible-FET Incorporating QM Effects

    Capacitance-Voltage (C-V) & Ballistic Current- Voltage (I-V) characteristics of Double Gate (DG) Silicon-on- Insulator (SOI) Flexible FETs having sub 35nm dimensions are obtained by self-consistent method using coupled Schrodinger- Poisson solver taking into account the quantum mechanical effects. Although, ATLAS simulations to determine current and other short channel effects in this device have been demonstrated in recent literature, C-V & Ballistic I-V characterizations by using self-consistent method are yet to be reported. C-V characteristic of this device is investigated here with the variation of bottom gate voltage. The depletion to accumulation transition point (i.e. Threshold voltage) of the C-V curve should shift in the positive direction when the bottom gate is negatively biased and our simulation results validate this phenomenon.     Commercial cultivation by farmers of medicinal plants in Northern Bangladesh

    Medicinal plants (MPs) are an important component of non-timber forest products (NTFPs), which are traditionally used in healthcare and source of livelihood all over the world. In an over-populated country like Bangladesh, the pressure on natural forests is immense; thus the cultivation of MPs can significantly contribute towards improving the livelihood of poor people, reducing the pressure on natural forests and enhancing biological diversity. Notwithstanding the growing recognition of its importance and economic and ecological potential, there has been little research on MPs, especially the cultivation, management and marketing aspects, in Bangladesh. Based on extensive fieldwork in a northern district of Bangladesh, this study explores various aspects of the cultivation, management and marketing of MPs. How collective efforts have brought economic and social benefits to communities was also examined in this study. It assesses the major processes and elements of management, identifies key problems and challenges and indicates ways of maximizing the potential of this important sector. The issues covered in this research include: farmers ’ perceptions and experiences; existing research and policy-making processes related to the MP sector; constraining factors (such as lack of processing technology, inadequate transportation, logistics, financial and storage infrastructure, lack of institutional capacity); markets, finance and networking; land use; pattern of livelihood and value chain issue

    Self-Consistent C-V Characterization of Depletion Mode Buried Channel InGaAs/InAs Quantum Well FET Incorporating Strain Effects

    We investigated Capacitance-Voltage (C-V) characteristics of the Depletion Mode Buried Channel InGaAs/InAs Quantum Well FET by using Self-Consistent method incorporating Quantum Mechanical (QM) effects. Though the experimental results of C-V for enhancement type device is available in recent literature, a complete characterization of electrostatic property of depletion type Buried Channel Quantum Well FET (QWFET) structure is yet to be done. C-V characteristics of the device is studied with the variation of three important process parameters: Indium (In) composition, gate dielectric and oxide thickness.     Professional guideline versus product label selection for treatment with IV thrombolysis: an analysis from SITS registry

    Introduction: Thrombolysis usage in ischaemic stroke varies across sites. Divergent advice from professional guidelines and product labels may contribute. Patients and methods: We analysed SITS-International registry patients enrolled January 2010 through June 2016. We grouped sites into organisational tertiles by number of patients arriving ≤2.5 h and treated ≤3 h, percentage arriving ≤2.5 h and treated ≤3 h, and numbers treated ≤3 h. We assigned scores of 1–3 (lower/middle/upper) per variable and 2 for onsite thrombectomy. We classified sites as lower efficiency (summed scores 3–5), medium efficiency (6–8) or higher efficiency (9–11). Sites were also grouped by adherence with European product label and ESO guideline: ‘label adherent’ (>95% on-label), ‘guideline adherent’ (≥5% off-label, ≥95% on-guideline) or ‘guideline non-adherent’ (>5% off-guideline). We cross-tabulated site-efficiency and adherence. We estimated the potential benefit of universally selecting by ESO guidance, using onset-to-treatment time-specific numbers needed to treat for day 90 mRS 0–1. Results: A total of 56,689 patients at 597 sites were included: 163 sites were higher efficiency, 204 medium efficiency and 230 lower efficiency. Fifty-six sites were ‘label adherent’, 204 ‘guideline adherent’ and 337 ‘guideline non-adherent’. There were strong associations between site-efficiency and adherence (P < 0.001). Almost all ‘label adherent’ sites (55, 98%) were lower efficiency. If all patients were treated by ESO guidelines, an additional 17,031 would receive alteplase, which translates into 1922 more patients with favourable three-month outcomes. Discussion: Adherence with product labels is highest in lower efficiency sites. Closer alignment with professional guidelines would increase patients treated and favourable outcomes. Conclusion: Product labels should be revised to allow treatment of patients ≤4.5 h from onset and aged ≥80 years

    In_xGa_{1-x}Sb MOSFET: Performance Analysis by Self Consistent CV Characterization and Direct Tunneling Gate Leakage Current

    In this paper, Capacitance-Voltage (C-V) characteristics and direct tunneling (DT) gate leakage current of antimonide based surface channel MOSFET were investigated. Self-consistent method was applied by solving coupled Schr\"odinger-Poisson equation taking wave function penetration and strain effects into account. Experimental I-V and gate leakage characteristic for p-channel InxGa1-xSb MOSFETs are available in recent literature. However, a self- consistent simulation of C-V characterization and direct tunneling gate leakage current is yet to be done for both n- channel and p-channel InxGa1-xSb surface channel MOSFETs. We studied the variation of C-V characteristics and gate leakage current with some important process parameters like oxide thickness, channel composition, channel thickness and temperature for n-channel MOSFET in this work. Device performance should improve as compressive strain increases in channel. Our simulation results validate this phenomenon as ballistic current increases and gate leakage current decreases with the increase in compressive strain. We also compared the device performance by replacing InxGa1-xSb with InxGa1-xAs in channel of the structure.     Characterization and evaluation of heavy metal tolerance of bacterial species from soil of waste area near Riyan steel rolling mills, Muzaffarnagar, India

    The present study observed a variety of microorganisms from the soil of the waste area near Riyan Steel Rolling Mills , Muzaffarnagar. Among the microorganisms, 10 isolates of Bacillus subtilis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus showed great potential against detrimental heavy metals like Hg, Pb, Zn. Out of these 10 isolates, only 2 isolates of Bacillus subtilis (N1A2, N1P2), one isolates of P. aeruginosa N1A4 and one isolates of S. aureus A1N3 showed tremendous tolerance against various heavy metals. Bacillus subtilis N1A2 showed15x109 cfu/ml in 100?g/ml of HgCl2 whereas B. subtilis N1P2 showed 15x109 cfu/ml in 400?g/ml of zinc acetatate. Similarily Pseudomonas aeruginosa N1A4 showed 11x109 cfu/ml in 150?g/ml of lead acetate. Staphylococcus aureus A1N3 showed great resistance towards 450?g/ml of zinc sulphate and maintain their growth up to 7x109 cfu/ml. strains were identified as Bacillus subtilis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus on the basis of their morphological, physiological and biochemical and compared with their standard MTCC strains

    Predictors for cerebral edema in acute ischemic stroke treated with intravenous thrombolysis

    Cerebral edema (CED) is a severe complication of acute ischemic stroke. There is uncertainty regarding the predictors for the development of CED after cerebral infarction. We aimed to determine which baseline clinical and radiological parameters predict development of CED in patients treated with intravenous thrombolysis. We used an image-based classification of CED with 3 degrees of severity (less severe CED 1 and most severe CED 3) on postintravenous thrombolysis imaging scans. We extracted data from 42 187 patients recorded in the SITS International Register (Safe Implementation of Treatments in Stroke) during 2002 to 2011. We did univariate comparisons of baseline data between patients with or without CED. We used backward logistic regression to select a set of predictors for each CED severity. CED was detected in 9579/42 187 patients (22.7%: 12.5% CED 1, 4.9% CED 2, 5.3% CED 3). In patients with CED versus no CED, the baseline National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale score was higher (17 versus 10; P<0.001), signs of acute infarct was more common (27.9% versus 19.2%; P<0.001), hyperdense artery sign was more common (37.6% versus 14.6%; P<0.001), and blood glucose was higher (6.8 versus 6.4 mmol/L; P<0.001). Baseline National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale, hyperdense artery sign, blood glucose, impaired consciousness, and signs of acute infarct on imaging were independent predictors for all edema types. The most important baseline predictors for early CED are National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale, hyperdense artery sign, higher blood glucose, decreased level of consciousness, and signs of infarct at baseline. The findings can be used to improve selection and monitoring of patients for drug or surgical treatment
