Applicability of dynamic facilitation theory to binary hard disk systems
We numerically investigate the applicability of dynamic facilitation (DF) theory for glass-forming binary hard disk systems where supercompression is controlled by pressure. By using novel efficient algorithms for hard disks, we are able to generate equilibrium supercompressed states in an additive nonequimolar binary mixture, where microcrystallization and size segregation do not emerge at high average packing fractions. Above an onset pressure where collective heterogeneous relaxation sets in, we find that relaxation times are well described by a “parabolic law” with pressure. We identify excitations, or soft spots, that give rise to structural relaxation and find that they are spatially localized, their average concentration decays exponentially with pressure, and their associated energy scale is logarithmic in the excitation size. These observations are consistent with the predictions of DF generalized to systems controlled by pressure rather than temperature

Development of the Internet-Based Customer-Oriented Ordering System Framework for Complicated Mechanical Product(<Special Issue>the Latest Frontiers of CAD/CAE/CG)
Recently, as consumers gradually prefer buying products that reflect their own personality, there exist some consumers who wish to involve in the product design process. Parallel with the popularization of e-business, many manufacturers have utilized the Internet to promote their products, and some have even built websites that enable consumers to select their desirable product specifications. Nevertheless, this method has not been applied on complicated mechanical product due to the facts that complicated mechanical product has a large number of specifications that inter-relate among one another. In such a case, ordinary consumers who are lacking of design knowledge, are not capable of determining these specifications. In this paper, a prototype framework called Internet-based consumer-oriented product ordering system has been developed in which it enables ordinary consumers to have large freedom in determining complicated mechanical product specifications, and meanwhile ensures that the manufacturing of the determined product is feasible.rights: 社団法人日本機械学会

Three-Terminal Single-Molecule Junctions Formed by Mechanically Controllable Break Junctions with Side Gating
Molecules are promising candidates
for electronic device components
because of their small size, chemical tunability, and ability to self-assemble.
A major challenge when building molecule-based electronic devices
is forming reliable molecular junctions and controlling the electrical
current through the junctions. Here, we report a three-terminal junction
that combines both the ability to form a stable single-molecule junction
via the mechanically controllable break junction (MCBJ) technique
and the ability to shift the energy levels of the molecule by gating.
Using a noncontact side-gate electrode located a few nanometers away
from the molecular junction, the conductance of the molecule could
be dramatically modulated because the electrical field applied to
the molecular junction from the side gate changed the molecular electronic
structure, as confirmed by the ab initio calculations. Our study will
provide a new design for mechanically stable single-molecule transistor
junctions fabricated by the MCBJ method
journal articl
