Environmental leaders and pioneers: agents of change?
© 2016 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group. This article distinguishes between states acting as environmental leaders or pioneers. While leaders usually actively seek to attract followers, this is not normally the case for pioneers. Dependent on their internal and external ambitions, states may take on the position of a laggard, pioneer, pusher or symbolic leader. When doing so, states employ various combinations of types and styles of leadership or pioneership. Four types of leadership/pioneership–structural, entrepreneurial, cognitive and exemplary–and two styles of leadership/pioneership–transactional/humdrum and transformational/heroic–are used to assess leaders and pioneers. The novel analytical framework put forward is intended to generate greater conceptual clarity, which is urgently needed for more meaningful theory-guided cumulative empirical research on leaders and pioneers

Boltzmann and the art of flying
One of the less known facets of Ludwig Boltzmann was that of an advocate of
Aviation, one of the most challenging technological problems of his times.
Boltzmann followed closely the studies of pioneers like Otto Lilienthal in
Berlin, and during a lecture on a prestigious conference he vehemently defended
further investments in the area. In this article I discuss his involvement with
Aviation, his role in its development and his correspondence with two flight
pioneers, Otto Lilienthal e Wilhelm Kress.Comment: 15 pages, no figure
The Pioneers of Biodynamics in New Zealand
From the original records held in the Archives of the Goetheanum, the earliest pioneers of biodynamics in New Zealand, those who joined Steiner’s Experimental Circle of Anthroposophic Farmers and Gardeners from 1924 to 1938, the years of omertà, are now revealed. Each of these fifteen members of the Experimental Circle submitted a signed confidentiality agreement and was issued with a numbered copy of the Agriculture Course at the time of joining. Thirteen individual copies were issued; the Compton-Smiths shared copy #12E, and the Averys shared copy #30E. The ‘E’ suffix indicated that the copy was an English-language edition (sometimes the ‘E’ appeared as a prefix). The copy to Bacchus was #562 (without a suffix) indicating that it was the German-language edition. From the outset, the German editions were typeset printed editions whereas the English editions, in this period, were all hand-typed editions (from the translation of George Kaufmann). Printed English-language editions of the Agriculture Course appeared in 1958. It is unclear how many, if any, of the original thirteen numbered copies issued to New Zealand may have survived
Globalization and environmental policy innovations: Perspectives for national and regional pioneers
Is economic globalisation an obstacle to environmental policy innovations of regions or nations? Which effects will the rapid globalisation of environmental policy have? Could globalisation improve the conditions for regulatory competition and green pioneers? The presentation will describe the growing environmental policy convergence in the world, which may prevent a downward spiral of environmental standards. Global environmental policy learning will be described in terms of environmental policy diffusion between countries and regions. The perspective for environmental pioneers may be better than before!
The role of industry, occupation, and location specific knowledge in the survival of new firms
How do regions acquire the knowledge they need to diversify their economic
activities? How does the migration of workers among firms and industries
contribute to the diffusion of that knowledge? Here we measure the industry,
occupation, and location-specific knowledge carried by workers from one
establishment to the next using a dataset summarizing the individual work
history for an entire country. We study pioneer firms--firms operating in an
industry that was not present in a region--because the success of pioneers is
the basic unit of regional economic diversification. We find that the growth
and survival of pioneers increase significantly when their first hires are
workers with experience in a related industry, and with work experience in the
same location, but not with past experience in a related occupation. We compare
these results with new firms that are not pioneers and find that
industry-specific knowledge is significantly more important for pioneer than
non-pioneer firms. To address endogeneity we use Bartik instruments, which
leverage national fluctuations in the demand for an activity as shocks for
local labor supply. The instrumental variable estimates support the finding
that industry-related knowledge is a predictor of the survival and growth of
pioneer firms. These findings expand our understanding of the micro-mechanisms
underlying regional economic diversification events
