Bridge Programs as an approach to improving diversity in physics

In most physical sciences, students from underrepresented minority (URM) groups constitute a small percentage of earned degrees at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Bridge programs can serve as an initiative to increase the number of URM students that gain access to graduate school and earn advanced degrees in physics. This talk discussed levels of representation in physical sciences as well as some results and best practices of current bridge programs in physics. The APS Bridge Program has enabled over 100 students to be placed into Bridge or graduate programs in physics, while retaining 88% of those placed.Comment: Proceedings for 38th International Conference on High Energy Physic

Development of methodology of alternative rationale for financial ensuring of bridges building

The purpose of the article is to develop a methodology for alternative substantiation of financial support for bridge construction. To achieve the purpose, the following general scientific and special methods and techniques of research were used: “golden ratio” rule; systematization and generalization; generalization of the results of the analysis and the logical generation of conclusions. Initially, the article analyzed the state of bridge structures in Europe and Ukraine. Based on the analysis, a disappointing situation has been identified, namely that a significant ratio of bridges number require major overhaul or are in critical condition. During the research, the following tasks were solved, namely: physical wear of the bridge as a failure was considered; the feasibility of investing in reconstruction or new bridge construction was determined. For the purpose of rational use of financial resources, which are limited in the age of economic challenges, and on the basis of the rule of “golden proportion”, the maximum percentage of investment in reconstruction is determined. If the limit is exceeded, it is decided to build a new bridge. This result allows making an economically sound decision and evaluating the effectiveness of the invested resources. It is proved that if the wear index of the overhaul bridge construction is higher than the wear rate of the new bridge construction by λ2 / λ1, and the amount of funds for overhaul reaches 70% of the funds needed to build a new one, it is better to build a new bridge

Does raising the retirement age increase employment of older workers?

Two pension reforms in Austria increased the early retirement age from 60 to 62 for men and from 55 to 58.25 for women. The reforms reduced early retirement by 18.9 percentage points among affected men aged 60-62 and by 22.3 percentage points among affected women aged 55-58.25. The associated increase in employment was merely 6.8 percentage points among men and 10.1 percentage points among women. The reforms had large spillover effects to the unemployment insurance program but negligible effects on disability insurance claims. Specifically, unemployment increased by roughly 10 percentage points both among men and women. Spillover effects had substantial fiscal implications. Absent spillover effects, the reduction of net government expenditures would have amounted to 264 million Euros per year. Due to higher unemployment insurance claims and associated foregone income tax revenues the actual reduction was only 148 million Euros. High-wage and healthy workers carried the bulk of the fall in net government expenditures. Low-wage and less healthy workers generated much less government savings as they either continue to retire early via disability pensions or bridge the gap to regular retirement by drawing unemployment benefits.Retirement age, policy reform, labor supply, disability, unemployment

Peso Acceptance Patterns in El Paso

This paper examines the acceptance of peso payments, or currency substitution reverse dollarization, by U.S retail firms near the international border with Mexico. Survey data are drawn from a stratified random sample of 586 retailers located in El Paso, Texas, situated across the border from Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua, Mexico. Approximately 13 percent of the participant firms accept Mexican pesos in exchange for goods and services. Empirical results indicate that factors such as a firm’s percentage of Spanish speaking employees and distance to the nearest international bridge significantly influence the decision to accept or reject Mexican pesos.Currency Substitution; Mexican Peso; Border Economics; Probit Models

Foods of Hawaii and the Pacific Basin: Vegetables and Vegetable Products: Raw, Processed, and Prepared: Volume 2: Percentage of U.S. Recommended Daily Allowances

The information on nutrition labels appears as amounts of food energy and selected nutrients contained in a designated serving size, and it also appears as the percentage of the U. S. Recommended Daily Allowances, or U.S. RDA, contributed by up to 20 or so nutrients per serving as it comes from the container. However, food items such as fresh produce that are not marketed in packages or containers do not carry nutrition information labels. The purpose of this publication is to bridge this gap by making available nutrition information - given as percentage of U.S. Recommended Daily Allowances - for eight nutrients provided by specific amounts of the various fresh vegetables and vegetable products
